Florida International University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Florida International University uses graduate-programme-specific thresholds, but core Indian benchmarks stay stable across departments.

Postgraduate Requirements at Florida International University

  • Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with minimum 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 (recommended for STEM MS); business and MBA programmes accept 55% (recommended)
  • English test: TOEFL iBT minimum 80 (0-120 legacy scale) or IELTS minimum 6.5; PTE minimum 58; Duolingo minimum 110
  • Credential verification: WES course-by-course evaluation is required for all Indian degrees
  • Standardised tests: GRE recommended for MS Computer Science and MS Engineering; GMAT or GRE required for International MBA

Undergraduate Requirements at Florida International University

  • Academic: Class 12 completed with minimum 70% aggregate (recommended); STEM majors expect higher marks in PCM subjects
  • English test: TOEFL iBT minimum 61, IELTS minimum 6.0, or Duolingo minimum 95
  • SAT or ACT: Test-optional for most majors as of the last published policy; verify at official page

Note: The IELTS waiver applies only if the entire bachelor’s degree was taught and examined in English at an accredited Indian institution, and a formal letter from the university registrar is required as proof.

Florida International University Acceptance Rate 2027

The overall Florida International University acceptance rate is approximately 64% (estimated), placing it in the moderately selective category among US public research universities. This estimate is drawn from published US-government enrolment data and third-party admissions databases and is directionally reliable.

Year Acceptance Rate Trend
2025 64% (estimated) Stable
2024 65% (estimated) Stable
2023 64% (estimated) Stable

Graduate programmes such as MS Computer Science and the International MBA are more selective than the university-wide rate. Indian applicants with 60% or higher and a competitive TOEFL or IELTS score have a reasonable chance for direct admission.

Reality check: A moderate acceptance rate does not mean easy entry for tuition waivers or graduate assistantships, which stay highly competitive and typically cover under 15% of the cohort.

The total annual cost of studying at Florida International University for Indian graduate students ranges from USD 39,000 to USD 60,000 (INR 33.0 lakh to 50.7 lakh), covering tuition and living expenses in Miami.

Florida International University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

Florida International University reports strong employment outcomes for graduates, supported by its Miami location as a Latin American and Caribbean business hub.

  • Employment rate: Career support programme; placement rate not centrally disclosed for international cohort
  • Median MS starting salary: USD 65,000 to USD 85,000 (INR 54.9 lakh to 71.8 lakh, market median for US STEM MS graduates)
  • Top recruiter sectors: Technology, banking and finance, healthcare, hospitality, aviation, and consulting; representative employers include major cruise lines, regional healthcare systems, and financial services firms
  • Post-study work: F-1 Optional Practical Training gives 12 months of work eligibility; STEM masters graduates get a further 24-month extension
  • Careers support: Career and Talent Development Center runs coaching, employer meet-ups, and industry mentor circles for international students

Note: Indian STEM masters graduates typically secure H-1B sponsorship through mid-sized technology consultancies in the first OPT year, rather than through large corporate campus hires.

Florida International University stands out among peers at its QS band for its Miami location, R1 research classification, and #1 US social mobility rank. Its hospitality and international trade programmes carry the strongest global signal.

Florida International University fits Indian applicants who want an affordable US public research degree in a diverse city, with a total investment of INR 33 lakh to 50 lakh against a median MS starting salary in the INR 54 lakh to 71 lakh band. The STEM tag on core masters, the 36-month OPT window, and Miami’s Latin American corridor make it a workable route for finance, hospitality, and technology careers.

It is less suitable for applicants aiming at top-15 US brand names or heavy fellowship funding, since assistantships are limited and QS placement is mid-band. A realistic alternative is Arizona State University for those wanting a similar public-research profile with wider programme choice.

FAQs

Ques. What are the most popular masters programmes at Florida International University?

Ans. Indian students at FIU cluster in the MS Cybersecurity, MS Computer Science, MS Information Technology, International MBA, MS Data Analytics, and Master of Architecture programmes. The MS in Hospitality Management also draws applicants because QS ranks the school at #23 globally in Hospitality and Tourism 2026. STEM-designated degrees are preferred as they extend OPT work eligibility by 24 months after graduation.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at FIU?

Ans. Yes, F-1 visa holders at Florida International University may work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the academic semester and full-time during official breaks. Off-campus work needs Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training authorisation, usually after the first academic year. Common on-campus roles include research assistant, library assistant, and dining hall positions.

Ques. Does FIU waive the GRE for Indian applicants?

Ans. Several graduate programmes at Florida International University waive the GRE for Indian applicants with a bachelor’s CGPA above 3.0 on the US 4.0 scale, or roughly 65% on the Indian percentage scale. MS Computer Science and MS Engineering programmes still recommend a GRE score in the 300-plus range. Confirm the current waiver policy on each departmental page before applying.

Ques. How long does the FIU application process take for Indian applicants?

Ans. The end-to-end timeline runs about four to six months. WES credential evaluation takes three to four weeks, application review runs six to eight weeks, and I-20 issuance takes another two weeks. Add four to six weeks for the US F-1 visa slot and interview. Start at least six months before your target intake.

Ques. What financial documents do Indian students need for the FIU I-20?

Ans. Florida International University requires proof of funds covering one full academic year, currently about USD 45,000 (INR 38 lakh). Acceptable documents include a bank balance certificate, an education loan sanction letter from a scheduled Indian bank, and a sponsor affidavit if funds are in a parent’s name. All statements must be dated within six months of application.

Ques. Are Indian education loans accepted for FIU tuition payments?

Ans. Yes, most Indian public sector banks and NBFCs sanction education loans for Florida International University because it holds R1 research classification and QS 2027 rank #659. Common lenders include SBI Global Ed-Vantage, HDFC Credila, Avanse, and Prodigy Finance. Loan amounts up to INR 1.5 crore are typical for graduate STEM programmes with collateral security.

Ques. What is the application fee for Florida International University?

Ans. The graduate application fee at Florida International University is USD 30 for most programmes and USD 50 for professional programmes such as the International MBA and Master of Architecture. Undergraduate applicants pay USD 30. Fee waivers are limited and generally not offered to international applicants. Payment is made through the online application portal via international credit card.

Ques. Does FIU allow dependents to accompany Indian students on F-2 visas?

Ans. Yes, spouses and unmarried children under 21 can accompany the primary F-1 student on F-2 dependent visas. Florida International University requires additional financial proof of about USD 6,000 (INR 5.1 lakh) per dependent per year, added to the primary I-20 amount. F-2 spouses cannot work in the US but may pursue part-time academic study.

Overview

My parents have also studied here and I feel like I have a connection to this place. Also, I would love to access the great opportunities and experiences from such a prestigious school. I've heard a lot about their standards and ethics and it really pulled my attention. It’s really going to be a memorable one I met a lot of interesting people from different culture and ethnicity, different race and also different people with different identity such as LGBT and I got to understand things from their perspective also, and I feel challenged everyday to learn more because it’s a competitive school with a lot of smart kids.

When I went there, the campus was kind of short. So, that's the main reason why I came back in two months. Because of Covid, nothing had really opened up. Apart from that, we always had access to the library and computer labs.

The fees structure is reasonable. There are several payment plans available. The university gives a fair amount of time to pay

Overview

Local and close to my house, I didn't want to go out of state so I chose to go to this university because I knew I would be homesick especially going to school for 4 years would have destroyed me so I decided to just go to school locally.

Fees

What I could recall was that I paid an application fee once, then after that every semester I paid classes and books that's all. But of course, it was a lot cheaper than a lot of people the lived there. I remember they would tell me they had to pay for room on board and food plus books and classes.
