Florida International University offers 20+ scholarships across UG, PG, and PhD levels, of which 8+ are open to Indian F1 applicants. Most PG awards stack with tuition waivers granted through Graduate Assistantships. The highest funding stack sits with the PhD in Biomedical Sciences package, covering full tuition plus USD 30,000 (INR 28.77 Lakhs) per year.

  • Standard out-of-state UG tuition: about USD 18,900 (INR 18.13 Lakhs) per year
  • With Gold and Blue Scholarship at USD 6,000 per year: about USD 12,900 (INR 12.37 Lakhs) per year
  • With Gold and Blue plus a FIU Foundation departmental award: about USD 8,900 (INR 8.54 Lakhs) per year
  • Next major deadline for Indians: Gold and Blue Fall 2027 cycle, tentative December 3, 2026

Currency Note: All INR conversions use the live rate of 1 USD = INR 95.90 as of August 2026. "Out-of-state" tuition applies to Indian applicants unless waived by an assistantship; "in-state" rates apply to Florida residents only.

The Gold and Blue Scholarship is the main FIU-funded aid Indian freshmen can secure at admission. Non-Florida awards range from USD 1,000 to USD 6,000 per year for four years. Renewal requires continued full-time enrolment and satisfactory academic progress; the award does not combine with other FIU merit aid.

The Honors College adds a second layer for high-scoring admits. Its own pool sits at USD 1,000 to USD 5,000 per year, tied to Honors coursework and research participation. Indian applicants file through the standard freshman admission window and receive a separate Honors decision.

The AcademicWorks portal holds hundreds of smaller FIU Foundation and departmental awards. Undergraduates file one internal profile and get matched to funds by major, county of residence, and community background. For total UG cost context, see the FIU admission page.

The Graduate Assistantship is the single most valuable master’s-level aid at Florida International University for Indian F1 holders. The tuition waiver covers 9 credits per fall or spring term at USD 379.95 per credit, worth about USD 3,420 (INR 3.28 Lakhs) each term. Add the stipend and mandatory health insurance, and the net cost of attendance drops close to zero.

Chapman Graduate School awards apply to several master’s tracks Indian applicants target most often:

  • MS Finance and MS Marketing
  • MS Business Analytics
  • MSc Human Resource Management
  • Master of International Business

Awards range from USD 5,000 to USD 12,000 and are announced in early summer once the admission cycle closes.

Reddit Insight: Indian PG admits on r/FIU and r/gradschool report that RA slots for Fall get informally filled 3 to 6 months ahead. Direct emails to prospective faculty in September decide funding more than the admission portal.

India-Specific Scholarships at Florida International University

Florida International University does not currently publish an India-only endowed scholarship. Indian applicants are eligible for every merit and departmental award that does not require U.S. citizenship or Florida residency. The table below lists the four institutional awards Indian students actually win in meaningful numbers.

Award PathAmount (USD)INR EquivalentNotes for Indian Applicants

Department-linked Global AwardsVariesVariesProgram-specific; check the department page after the admission decision

Miami has one of the largest South Asian populations in the U.S. Southeast, and FIU actively recruits from Indian metros. Indian applicants routinely stack Gold and Blue with a partial Chapman award once admitted to an eligible master’s track. Departmental Global Awards fill the gap for programs like Cybersecurity, Data Science, and Engineering Management.

PhD funding at Florida International University follows the standard U.S. R1 pattern: admission and funding are decided together. Indian doctoral applicants targeting Biomedical Sciences see a guaranteed USD 30,000 (INR 28.77 Lakhs) annual stipend for the 2024-25 cycle onwards. Tuition and mandatory fees are covered separately by the University Graduate School.

Business Administration PhD candidates get a 5-year package that ties GA and RA appointments to research productivity. Fellowships like the Dissertation Year Fellowship top off the funding once the coursework phase closes.

The Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship is the highest-value external option for Indian students heading to FIU. It funds tuition, travel, living, and insurance for two years. Fields are restricted to Public Health, Environmental Science, Public Administration, Journalism, and six other areas, most of which FIU offers.

Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation supports master’s, MPhil, and PhD studies at recognised institutions worldwide, with FIU included when the program holds strong academic standing. The Inlaks award covers tuition, living, one-way travel, visa, and health for up to USD 120,000. JN Tata Endowment and KC Mahindra loans stack with any FIU merit aid, since both are interest-free loans rather than grants.

Reddit Insight: Indian students on r/IndianStudentsAbroad note that Fulbright-Nehru does not stack with a FIU Graduate Assistantship. USIEF grantees must drop the assistantship if the fellowship comes through. Treat these as either-or applications, not parallel bets.

Florida International University Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. What is the highest total scholarship stack an Indian student can secure at FIU?

Ans. The maximum institutional stack sits with the PhD in Biomedical Sciences package. It covers full tuition plus a USD 30,000 (INR 28.77 Lakhs) annual stipend, guaranteed for the standard doctoral duration. At the master’s level, a Graduate Assistantship plus a Chapman award pushes total value past USD 25,000 (INR 23.98 Lakhs) per year. Tuition is waived on top through the GA appointment.

Ques. When should Indian applicants apply for FIU scholarships?

Ans. The Gold and Blue undergraduate deadline falls on December 3 each year for non-Florida applicants targeting the next Fall intake. Master’s applicants should submit admission by January 15 to be considered for Chapman and department awards announced in June. PhD applicants must email prospective faculty by September of the year before intended entry to lock in Research Assistantship funding.

Ques. Do Indian students need to submit a separate application for FIU merit scholarships?

Ans. Gold and Blue and most first-year merit awards are auto-considered when you complete your admission application by the December 3 deadline. Departmental and FIU Foundation awards require a separate profile on the AcademicWorks portal, which opens in February and closes by mid-March annually. Graduate Assistantships require direct correspondence with the department, not the central admission office.

Ques. What GPA or test scores do I need for the Gold and Blue Scholarship as an Indian applicant?

Ans. FIU does not publish a fixed GPA or SAT threshold for Gold and Blue. Awarded students historically hold a 3.5 or higher GPA on a 4.0 scale, equivalent to roughly 85 percent on CBSE or ISC boards. FIU is test-optional, so score-free applicants are judged on academic merit and coursework rigor alone.

Ques. Will a FIU Graduate Assistantship stipend cover rent and living costs in Miami?

Ans. The GA stipend for master’s students typically runs USD 15,000 to USD 20,000 (INR 14.39 to INR 19.18 Lakhs) per year. This covers a 20-hour weekly appointment. A shared one-bedroom near Modesto Maidique campus rents for USD 900 to USD 1,200 per month. The stipend covers rent and basic living with tight budgeting.

Ques. How competitive is PhD funding at FIU for Indian applicants?

Ans. PhD funding at Florida International University is program-specific rather than universal. Biomedical Sciences guarantees full funding to every admitted candidate, so competition happens at the admission gate. Business Administration and Computer Science offer 5-year packages tied to Research Assistantship slots. Cohort sizes are small, so early direct contact with faculty matters more than portal submissions.

My parents have also studied here and I feel like I have a connection to this place. Also, I would love to access the great opportunities and experiences from such a prestigious school. I've heard a lot about their standards and ethics and it really pulled my attention. It’s really going to be a memorable one I met a lot of interesting people from different culture and ethnicity, different race and also different people with different identity such as LGBT and I got to understand things from their perspective also, and I feel challenged everyday to learn more because it’s a competitive school with a lot of smart kids.

Good biology program that is in my home city so I can live at home and commute to campus to save money. My parents also both graduated from here as well as other family members that spoke very highly of the university

Financial aid, all I really needed to do was to go on the FAFSA website and do what I needed to do and from there, there was no problem ever in my 4 years at the university. I didn't have any scholarships or any loans out during my time at the university.

Local and close to my house, I didn't want to go out of state so I chose to go to this university because I knew I would be homesick especially going to school for 4 years would have destroyed me so I decided to just go to school locally.
