New Jersey Institute of Technology Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Indian applicants meet a mix of academic, English proficiency and credential-evaluation requirements consistent with peer US News-ranked universities in USA.
Postgraduate Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree: Four-year undergraduate degree with 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended); NJIT expects "3.0 GPA or higher" on the US 4-point scale.
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79 (0-120 legacy scale) or 4.0 (1-6 scale), IELTS 6.0, Duolingo 100, or PTE 53.
- Credential evaluation: WES or equivalent course-by-course evaluation for Indian degrees.
- GRE: Optional for most MS programmes; recommended for competitive PhD funding.
Undergraduate Requirements
- Class 12 academics: Strong performance in top 25% of class; Class 12 with 70% to 80% (recommended) depending on programme.
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79 / 4.0, IELTS 6.0, Duolingo 100, or PTE 53. SAT and ACT are optional for Fall 2027 except for Honors College and accelerated pathways.
Key insight: IELTS and TOEFL waivers apply only to Indian applicants who complete their bachelor’s or Class 12 in a fully English-medium curriculum from an English-speaking country on the university’s approved list. India-medium instruction from Indian universities does not qualify for the waiver even where the medium is English.
New Jersey Institute of Technology Acceptance Rate 2027
New Jersey Institute of Technology has a moderate undergraduate acceptance rate of 66% (estimated), positioning it as accessible for well-prepared Indian applicants without being open-admission. This estimate reflects the most recent Common Data Set patterns and third-party reporting; NJIT does not publish a single university-wide official acceptance rate in a form that separates domestic from international pools.
Graduate admission is programme-specific. Computing and engineering master’s programmes typically admit stronger candidates because applicant volumes are higher; management and interdisciplinary master’s tend to admit at higher rates.
Reality check: A 66% headline rate does not translate to a 66% chance for any single Indian applicant. Competitive MS Computer Science and MS Data Science applicants should target CGPA 7.5/10 or better, TOEFL iBT 90+ and prior internship or research work to be shortlisted.

New Jersey Institute of Technology Campus, Facilities and Student Life
The 45-acre urban campus sits in downtown Newark, one PATH train stop from Manhattan and three blocks from Newark Penn Station, making it the closest major STEM campus to New York City.
- Location and transit: Downtown Newark; NJ Transit and PATH give one-seat access to New York Penn Station in 25 minutes and Newark Liberty Airport in 15 minutes.
- Housing: On-campus dorms cost USD 9,500 to USD 13,000/year (INR 9.1 to 12.4 lakh); housing is guaranteed for all first-year students who apply on time.
- Notable facility: The Makerspace and VR/AR lab, plus the Ying Wu College of Computing building with cybersecurity and quantum computing labs.
- Indian community: Active Indian Student Association hosts Diwali, Holi and Republic Day events; the wider University Heights area has Indian grocery stores and restaurants within walking distance.

What Indian students say: Winters can hit -5 degrees Celsius in January and require serious clothing budgets. The Newark campus feels safe on the main quad but students avoid solo walks after dark beyond the police-patrolled academic core. Free NJIT shuttle service between residence halls and academic buildings is a regularly used amenity.
NJIT Scholarships 2027
New Jersey Institute of Technology offers two main funding categories to Indian applicants: automatic undergraduate merit awards and competitive graduate assistantships. No named scholarship is exclusively reserved for Indian nationals.
| Scholarship | Type | Award Value | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NJIT Undergraduate Merit Scholarships | Merit, automatic | USD 10,000 to USD 22,000/year (INR 9.6 to 21.0 lakh/year) | Undergraduate international freshmen with strong Class 12 academics | Awarded with admission decision |
| Graduate Teaching and Research Assistantships | Merit, competitive | Full tuition remission plus stipend | PhD applicants and select high-performing MS applicants nominated by departments | Tied to programme admission deadline |
Planning note: Graduate assistantships at NJIT are department-driven, not centrally awarded. Indian MS applicants should email prospective research supervisors before submitting the application and cite specific published papers to improve the odds of a funded offer.

New Jersey Institute of Technology Rankings 2027
New Jersey Institute of Technology’s strongest global position is in QS, where it climbed from #791-800 in 2025 to #741-750 in 2027, a two-band rise over three cycles driven largely by international faculty and student metrics reported by the university.

NJIT is also placed #42 among top public schools in the US News 2026 national ranking, and three ARWU subject areas sit inside the global top 150, which materially strengthens the profile for applicants comparing tech-focused QS-ranked universities in USA.
Key insight: The QS 741-750 band puts NJIT inside the F-1 visa officer’s "recognised US university" comfort zone and above the informal cutoff Indian public-sector education loan reviewers use. Employer recognition in the tri-state area is stronger than the global rank suggests because of the Newark and Jersey City corporate footprint.

New Jersey Institute of Technology Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
New Jersey Institute of Technology reports strong employment outcomes driven by its NYC-metro location, engineering-heavy programme mix and mandatory career-services engagement in the first semester.
- Master’s placement rate: 89.7% within six months of graduation, per NJIT-published career outcomes data.
- Average MS starting salary: USD 85,000 to USD 95,000/year (INR 81 to 90 lakh); MS Computer Science and MS Data Science cluster at the upper end.
- Reported top recruiters: Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Meta, JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Prudential, Johnson & Johnson, Verizon, Bloomberg, Deloitte, IBM.
- Career support: Career Development Services runs mandatory pre-OPT workshops, mock interviews and a recruiter-driven career fair each semester on the Newark campus.
- OPT and STEM extension: Nearly all engineering and computing degrees qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving graduates up to 36 months of legal US work authorisation post-completion, a decisive edge over non-STEM universities in USA.
Insider note: New Jersey-based pharma and financial services firms recruit heavily from NJIT because relocation from Newark is unnecessary and hiring managers know the curriculum. Indian graduates from MS Computer Science and MS Cybersecurity report H-1B sponsorship rates well above the market average through these mid-sized regional employers rather than only the FAANG names.
New Jersey Institute of Technology vs Peer Universities
Applicants typically weigh NJIT against other tri-state STEM universities and against private engineering peers with similar cost profiles. The comparison below uses graduate tuition (out-of-state) and a one-line differentiator from public data alongside THE-ranked universities in USA.
| University | Location | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD) | Avg Annual PG Fee (INR lakh) | One-line Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New Jersey Institute of Technology | Newark, NJ | USD 40,734 | 38.9 lakh | Public STEM university with 45-acre urban campus 20 minutes from Manhattan |
| Stevens Institute of Technology | Hoboken, NJ | USD 45,000 (estimated) | 43.0 lakh (estimated) | Private STEM peer directly across the Hudson from Manhattan |
| Rutgers University-New Brunswick | New Brunswick, NJ | USD 32,000 (estimated) | 30.6 lakh (estimated) | State flagship with broader liberal arts and health sciences |
| Drexel University | Philadelphia, PA | USD 40,000 (estimated) | 38.2 lakh (estimated) | Private university with mandatory paid co-op programme |
| Illinois Institute of Technology | Chicago, IL | USD 42,000 (estimated) | 40.1 lakh (estimated) | Cross-country STEM peer in downtown Chicago |
NJIT stands out from private STEM peers on affordability, with graduate tuition roughly 10% to 25% lower than Stevens and comparable private options. It differs from state flagships like Rutgers by concentrating almost entirely on engineering, computing and applied sciences rather than a full liberal arts portfolio.
New Jersey Institute of Technology suits Indian STEM applicants who want US-based STEM OPT eligibility, tri-state employer access and total two-year investment of INR 155 to 165 lakh against a median MS salary of INR 74.2 lakh, giving a two-year post-tax payback window for most CS and data roles. The strongest single Indian-specific advantage is the Newark campus location, which sits inside the NYC-metro recruiting radius without NYC housing costs and qualifies for full 36-month STEM OPT under the F-1 MBA in USA visa track equally.
New Jersey Institute of Technology is a weaker fit for applicants whose priorities are ivy-league brand ranking, a rural residential campus experience or programmes outside engineering and applied sciences. Candidates in that profile often prefer Purdue University or Rutgers-New Brunswick instead.
New Jersey Institute of Technology FAQs
Ques. What English-taught master’s programmes does NJIT offer beyond computer science?
Ans. New Jersey Institute of Technology offers over 50 English-taught master’s programmes across six schools. Beyond CS and Data Science, popular options for Indian applicants include MS Financial Engineering, MS Applied Statistics, MS Biomedical Engineering, MS Applied Mathematics, MS Environmental Engineering, MS Engineering Management, MS Architecture and MS Business and Information Systems. All are STEM OPT-eligible except the pure business tracks.

Ans. Yes. F-1 students at New Jersey Institute of Technology can work on-campus up to 20 hours per week during the academic term and 40 hours per week during breaks. Off-campus work requires Curricular Practical Training authorisation, typically available from the second semester. On-campus roles include research assistantships, library shifts and IT helpdesk positions.
Ques. Does NJIT waive GRE for master’s admission in 2027?
Ans. Most NJIT master’s programmes have made GRE optional for the 2027 admission cycle. Departments still recommend a GRE score of 300+ for competitive funding consideration and PhD applications. MS Computer Science, MS Data Science and MS Electrical Engineering explicitly list GRE as not required, though a strong score strengthens the application file.
Ques. What is the NJIT application fee for international students?
Ans. The standard NJIT application fee is USD 75 (INR 7,169) and is non-refundable. New Jersey Institute of Technology occasionally waives this fee for students who apply through recruitment fairs, virtual open days or partner-agent submissions. Fee waivers are not automatic; applicants should request one via the international admissions email before submitting the online application form.
Ques. Which Indian education loan lenders recognise New Jersey Institute of Technology?
Ans. NJIT is on the approved lists of HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, InCred and Prodigy Finance for education loans up to INR 1 crore without collateral for STEM master’s programmes. Public-sector lenders including SBI and Bank of Baroda also recognise NJIT, though these typically require collateral for loans above INR 40 lakh and take longer to process.
Ques. Does NJIT require an interview for master’s admission?
Ans. New Jersey Institute of Technology does not require a mandatory interview for most master’s admissions. Some MBA and executive programmes conduct short admission interviews via Zoom, and PhD applicants often speak informally with prospective supervisors before offer decisions. For MS applicants, the Statement of Purpose, transcripts and English test scores drive the admission decision.
Ques. How does credential verification through WES work for Indian NJIT applicants?
Ans. Indian applicants send Class 10, Class 12 and bachelor’s mark sheets plus degree certificates to World Education Services for a course-by-course evaluation. WES converts Indian percentages and CGPA into US GPA on a 4.0 scale. Processing takes 15 to 25 business days after documents are received. NJIT uses the WES report to verify eligibility and funding decisions.
Ques. What documents does NJIT require for F-1 visa financial proof?
Ans. New Jersey Institute of Technology requires proof of funds covering the first year of tuition, fees, health insurance and living costs, roughly USD 62,000 to USD 68,000 (INR 59 to 65 lakh). Accepted proofs include bank balance certificates, sponsor affidavits and education loan sanction letters from approved lenders. NJIT issues the I-20 only after this financial documentation is verified.

Campus Life

Overview
I wanted an international exposure. I thought of USA and got to know about this course. NJIT had the program called 'Flexpath', through which international students could complete their semester online. I did my fall semester online. I saved a lot of money because i did not have to pay for housing, residence or anything else. I started for my visa preparation. I was here in mid Jan 2021 to continue my semester. The difference between online and in-person becomes thinner in NJIT. In fall 2021, classes were in-person.
Campus Life
Undergrad makes up majority of population in NJIT. Majority grad students are Indian. There are n no. of clubs. I am in a group called Sanskar. All the grad students club report to a committee, which handles every club. Similarly for other types of courses as well. In college lobby, there are many stalls everyday. Different clubs are there. There is a pub in our college. Delivery of alcohol is limited. Many events are going on, where we get free food.
Overview
You can complete your Master's in 3 semesters and it's nearby New York great place to stay and explore. Lots of start-up companies are there around campus.
Fees
40- 45 Lakhs is the program fee.
Overview
I picked NJIT because of its small class sizes compared to the other 7 schools I applied to. Since I had a fee waiver for the application I did not have to pay the $75 application fee. After applying I heard back from them within 2 weeks about my decision. They do look for higher math scores and want you to take at least up to pre-calc in high school since math is deemed to be difficult here. NJIT has a tutoring center for all subjects so it is really easy to find help when one seeks help.
Fees
It is $8000 per semester but financial aid does bring it down to $2000-$3000 per semester.
Overview
The course structure for Data Science was the best amongst other universities. As my area of interest is in Big data and Machine Learning, Professor Roshan Usman and Professor Chase Wu are the best in the industry with their ongoing research projects in the data science field.
Fees
Fee structure includes university fees, tuition out of city graduate, graduate student association, matriculation, health insurance.
Overview
I liked the course structure and the location. compared to my other admits NJIT was on priority list because of the location(near to the new york), which is kind of cheaper. and talking about the courses, professors are really good here, as they have more of practical concerns. and they are really helpful.
Campus Life
there are lots of thing going on campus as NJIT has Indian community, sports club also computer science clubs. As Indian student we celebrate the festivals like ganapati, holi on campus. also Njit recently organize an hackathon. we have free high speed wifi on campus. NJIT has a huge and beautiful library with hundreds of books. also NJIT has printers for students which are there in library itself. NJIT has a huge gym and playgrounds for soccer and also indoor games like pool and all stuff.
