  • English test: TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS 6.5, PTE 53 or Duolingo 100
  • Credential evaluation: WES or ECE course-by-course evaluation for Indian transcripts
  • Standardized tests: GRE waived for most engineering and computing masters; GMAT or GRE waiver route for MBA

Undergraduate requirements:

  • Standardized tests: SAT and ACT are optional for international freshmen

University of Oklahoma Acceptance Rate 2027

University of Oklahoma is a moderately selective public research university with an overall acceptance rate of 76% (estimated) and a stricter 36% (estimated) rate for international applicants. Figures are derived from third-party enrolment reporting; official cohort rates are not published.

CohortAcceptance Rate
Overall (2025-2026 cycle)76% to 77% (estimated)
International (2025-2026 cycle)36% (estimated)

The international cohort is tighter than the overall figure because of test score, credential and financial-proof documentation. Indian applicants who meet the stated minimums typically clear a first review.

Reality check: A CGPA of 7.5/10 or higher and TOEFL 90+ puts Indian applicants comfortably above the median admit profile at University of Oklahoma for STEM masters.

University of Oklahoma Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

University of Oklahoma channels international graduates into Oklahoma’s energy, aerospace, weather technology and healthcare sectors through its Career Services network.

  • Placement rate: Not officially disclosed as a single figure; the Price MBA reports 90%+ employment within six months (institutional media)
  • Median starting salary (US market median for STEM masters): $75,000 to $85,000 (₹66.5 to 75.4 Lakh) — labeled market median, not OU-specific
  • Median post-MBA salary (US market median): $95,000 to $110,000 (₹84.3 to 97.6 Lakh) — labeled market median
  • Recruiting sectors: Energy (ConocoPhillips, Devon, Chesapeake sit in Oklahoma City), aerospace (Boeing has a Tinker AFB partnership), meteorology (National Weather Center on campus), and technology consulting
  • Career support: One-year OPT plus 24-month STEM OPT extension for eligible masters; on-campus career fairs each semester

Insider note: Oklahoma City offers a low cost-of-living market for early-career Indian graduates, which stretches an entry salary further than Austin or Dallas for the same role.

University of Oklahoma vs Peer Universities

Indian applicants typically shortlist University of Oklahoma against other public research universities in the South Central US with strong STEM programmes at a similar fee band.

UniversityQS Rank 2027Avg Annual PG Fee (USD)Avg Annual PG Fee (INR Lakh)Differentiator
University of Oklahoma#771 to 780$16,892 to $26,12414.8 to 22.89 LakhLowest tuition among peers with STEM OPT
Oklahoma State UniversityNot ranked in QS 2027 top 800$24,000 (estimated)21.29 Lakh (estimated)Strong agricultural and engineering research base
University of Texas at Dallas#651 to 660 (verify)$32,000 (estimated)28.38 Lakh (estimated)Tech corridor placements in Dallas
Arizona State University#215 (verify)$30,000 (estimated)26.61 Lakh (estimated)Larger Indian cohort and warmer climate

OU stands out for the sub-$17,000 total-tuition ticket on MS Computer Science and MS Data Science, a rare combination of STEM OPT eligibility and a fee band comparable to European public universities. The trade-off is a smaller Indian alumni network compared with UT Dallas or ASU.

The University of Oklahoma is for the Indian applicant chasing a STEM masters at the lowest verified US non-resident tuition, targeting roughly ₹29 to 37 Lakh total investment against a market-median $75,000 (₹66.5 Lakh) first-year salary. The strongest Indian-specific advantage is STEM OPT eligibility on core computing and engineering programmes.

OU is not the right fit for applicants who need a big-city environment during study, or a large existing Indian cohort inside the classroom. Applicants who value that ecosystem may prefer University of Texas at Dallas, which trades higher tuition for immediate access to the North Texas tech corridor.

University of Oklahoma FAQs

Ques. Does University of Oklahoma waive the GRE for MS Computer Science?

Ans. Yes. The Gallogly College of Engineering and the School of Computer Science at OU waive the GRE for most MS applicants for Fall 2027 entry, and the MS Computer Science and MS Data Science admissions pages currently accept applications without GRE scores. A strong CGPA above 7.5/10 and English test scores compensate. Applicants should still confirm the waiver at the individual department page before finalising.

Ques. What English tests other than IELTS does OU accept?

Ans. The University of Oklahoma accepts TOEFL iBT at 79, IELTS at 6.5, Pearson PTE at 53, Duolingo English Test at 100, iTEP at 4.7, and Cambridge C1 Advanced. Duolingo is the fastest option for Indian applicants racing a Fall 2027 deadline, with results within 48 hours. All scores must be sent directly through the testing agency to the University of Oklahoma admissions office.

Ques. How much does an MS at University of Oklahoma cost in total for Indian students?

Ans. Total programme tuition ranges from $16,747 to $26,124 (₹14.84 to 22.89 Lakh) for most MS programmes, plus living expenses of $15,798 (₹14 Lakh) per year at Norman. A typical two-year MS Computer Science at OU costs approximately ₹43 Lakh all-in, before graduate assistantship offsets that can waive tuition entirely and add a monthly stipend.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at OU?

Ans. Yes. F-1 visa holders at the University of Oklahoma can work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during term and full-time during breaks. Off-campus work requires Curricular Practical Training authorisation after the first academic year. Graduate assistantships at OU count toward the 20-hour cap and typically include full tuition waivers plus a monthly stipend, making them the highest-value part-time route.

Ques. Is a 3-year Indian bachelor’s degree accepted at OU for masters admission?

Ans. The University of Oklahoma Graduate College typically expects a 4-year bachelor’s for direct masters admission. Indian applicants with a 3-year BSc, BA or BCom can either add a post-graduate diploma or an Indian masters year to bridge the gap, or apply to programmes that accept WES course-by-course evaluations showing US-equivalent four-year credit. Engineering B.Tech and B.E. degrees are directly accepted.

Ques. Which Indian banks approve education loans for University of Oklahoma?

Ans. HDFC Credila, Avanse, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India and Axis Bank all approve education loans for University of Oklahoma programmes. Collateral-free loans up to ₹50 Lakh are available for STEM masters admits with a US co-signer or strong academic profile. Loan sanction typically requires the I-20 form and admission letter, which OU issues within 4 to 6 weeks of admission decisions.

Ques. What is the application fee for Indian applicants at University of Oklahoma?

Ans. The University of Oklahoma charges $90 (₹7,983) for undergraduate applications and $100 (₹8,870) for graduate applications from international students. Fees are paid online through the OU application portal via credit or debit card. Fee waivers are limited and typically not offered to international applicants, though certain graduate departments occasionally sponsor waivers during recruitment cycles.

Ques. How long is the OPT and STEM extension for graduates from OU?

Ans. University of Oklahoma graduates on F-1 visas qualify for 12 months of Optional Practical Training after programme completion. Graduates from STEM-designated programmes at OU, which include MS Computer Science, MS Data Science, MS ECE, MS Mechanical and MS Petroleum, receive an additional 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving three total years of US work authorisation before an H-1B sponsorship is required.

Ques. What are the best reasons to attend the University of Oklahoma?

● Top Answer By Steven Lockwood on 16 Apr 22

Ans. The greatest asset of University of Oklahoma is its professors. The faculties are brilliant, especially in honors and engineering/science colleges. You will get networking opportunities with professors who genuinely want to see you grow.  OU offers ample opportunities to carry out undergraduate research. You can apply for undergraduate research funding and present your work at the annual conference of the university. These opportunities can do wonders to your resume.  OU has a good connection to the Texas job market. You can leverage these connections to receive good recruitment opportunities. A recent Georgetown University study states OU offers the best long-term ROI. Around 87% of students receive job offers within six months of graduation. The median salary for OU graduates is $57,000.  OU offers a great community and atmosphere. The campus experience it offers is enviable.  If you are a bibliophile, you will love the reading clubs of the university. From Harry Potter to Freakonomics, you will certainly find books from any genre that you find interesting.  Football is an integral part of life in the state of Oklahoma. OU is a part of this culture. It actively competes in the football rankings.  OU offers its students all the academic advantages of elite schools and gives them freedom to experiment with different disciplines. Read more

Ques. Which one is better- University of Oklahoma Norman or UT Dallas?

● Top Answer By Chris Nandakumar on 04 Feb 21

Ans. Oklahoma is known for the oil and gas industry and the college being the flagship campus of the state has more opportunities, so you should consider UO over UTD. While the two schools are not similar to one another, you should look into the criteria you are considering prior to applying to either colleges. UT Dallas was traditionally a commuter campus with on campus housing being recently built in the last 15 years. Rankings & Tuition: This is usually the two most important factors students consider. According to US News and World Report: Name of the University Ranking Tuition University of Oklahoma #133 in national universities. USD 27,068 University of Texas, Dallas #143 in national universities. USD 38,970 Popular programs: University of Oklahoma: From my experience, OU is primarily known for its Petroleum Engineering and Meteorology programs. The business school is quite good too with programs in Business, Management and Marketing being some of the popular ones. UT Dallas: If you are looking into research programs, Dallas has some really good research options with top tier faculty available. Additionally, the MBA program at UTD is also very popular among students. Other programs that are sought after include biological sciences, engineering and other business related programs. Additionally, if you’re looking at campus and room and board, OU at Norman is much more affordable and a quaint town with a good football scene at the campus compared to UTD. Nevertheless, my advice to you would be that you should zero down on a program and look at which institute offers it better before making a decision.Read more

Ques. What is your review of The University of Oklahoma?

● Top Answer By Aishwarya Sankhe on 04 Feb 21

Ans. The best part about the University of Oklahoma is that the fees are not exorbitant and it has a great reputation. It ranks at #133 in National Universities according to US News. The upper division classes are small which will help you build valuable relationships with your professor. In my sister’s experience with Biochemistry, the department is a close knit circle and you will also learn to develop connections and network.  Location: The institute is located in Norman, Oklahoma which is a free-thinking town with affordable housing and you will have a large campus to explore. It is littered with gyms, libraries and fine arts spaces with really good architecture. The college also has an active football scene and in my opinion, you will definitely end up at a game or two. Classes: Depending on the course you choose, your course classes may have 500+ students to small classes with just 30 students in a class. The faculty is also quite approachable and genuinely cares for students and their academics. Placements: On an average, their graduates make about USD 70,929 per year so you can expect to make an amount closer to this. OhioHealth and JP Morgan and Chase are some of the popular companies that hire students.  You can expect to have a good career after graduating from the program and have a great college life as well. Just research a little about the program you want to go to and give it a shot!Read more

Ques. What is the University of Oklahoma and the surrounding area like?

● Top Answer By Matthew Brown on 04 Feb 21

Ans. Overall, University of Oklahoma has a great life based in the town of Norman. It has a beautiful campus with good landscaping and huge trees. You will definitely love walking to classes in spring. Additionally, the architecture has a sort of Gothic feel to it with a huge library. Do check out the Great Reading Room in the library.  There are also some fraternities and sororities on campus. Rent and housing prices are also quite affordable since the town is small. The old homes near the campus are pricier. Some amazing things you should know about OU: There is a good football life on campus and the enthusiasm is quite contagious. Do go watch the Sooners play if you get the chance. There is beautiful Cherokee Gothic architecture around the campus which is quite popular among the masses. The university is also affiliated with Universities Research Association, Association of Public Land grant universities and is also accredited by Higher Learning Commission. There are rumours that the college lacks cultural diversity but is listed as a Tier 2 institute. The campus is quite big (Around 3000 acres I think) and you will be able to avail a number of student services too. You should definitely visit the campus library and museums. Another major perk is that cars are allowed on campus, which will help you navigate around faster. Norman is a great town and is quite safe. Best part is, it will probably take you about 20 minutes to get from one end of the town to another. There are a couple of Walmarts, Targets and Victoria’s with grocery stores littered all over the town. Overall, you can expect to have a decent university life and affordable living at Norman and University of Oklahoma.Read more
