University of Utah admissions use a holistic review with fixed intake deadlines and SAT or ACT optional. Freshmen typically hold an unweighted 3.5 GPA (around 85% at Class XII). Graduate applicants need a completed four-year bachelor’s degree.

  • Fall 2027 (primary intake) applications open August 1, 2026 and close August 1, 2027.
  • Base tuition USD 32,932 (INR 31.42 Lakhs) yearly, application fee USD 65 (INR 6,201).
  • UG needs Class XII around 85%, PG needs a four-year bachelor’s, IELTS 6.5 minimum.
  • Acceptance rate sits at around 86% institution-wide across recent cycles.

Indian students concentrate in MS Computer Science, MS Business Analytics, and the Eccles MBA at the University of Utah. International student feedback highlights Salt Lake City’s tech hiring, OPT eligibility for STEM programs, and lower public-university tuition compared with East and West Coast peers.

Status: Closing Soon. Fall 2026 institutional deadline is August 1, 2026, but the I-20 document deadline (June 1, 2026) has passed, making Fall 2026 unworkable for Indian applicants needing an F-1 visa. Fall 2027 (primary intake, most programs open here) and Spring 2027 open on August 1, 2026 through the Common Application. Application fee is USD 65 (INR 6,201) at both levels.

University of Utah Application Deadlines for Indian Students

The University of Utah runs three intakes per academic year, with Fall as the primary intake for international applicants. The I-20 form is the visa-eligibility document that the university issues after admission, and it carries an earlier deadline than the general application, per the official international freshman admissions page.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use USD 1 = INR 95.40 (July 2026). Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.

University of Utah’s primary intake for Indian students is Fall (August), where most programmes and departments open admissions and the strongest assistantship funding pool is available.

University of Utah Admission Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility at the University of Utah depends on the level applied for. Undergraduate applicants are evaluated on Class XII performance and course rigour. Graduate applicants are evaluated on their bachelor’s degree, discipline fit, and English proficiency, with the department setting the final academic bar.

University of Utah Undergraduate Eligibility Floor

  • Class XII score: unweighted 3.5 GPA equivalent (around 85%) is typical of admitted freshmen.
  • Course rigour: AP, IB, or dual-enrolment coursework strengthens the file for holistic review.
  • Test policy: SAT and ACT are optional. Strong scores can still support merit scholarship review.

University of Utah Graduate Eligibility Floor

  • Bachelor’s degree: completed four-year bachelor’s from a recognised university or the international equivalent.
  • Minimum GPA: typically 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (around 75% Indian aggregate).
  • GRE or GMAT: requirement varies by department, and many programmes now list it as optional.

How Does University of Utah Verify English Proficiency?

The University of Utah accepts IELTS 6.5 (in-person tests only), TOEFL iBT 80, or Duolingo English Test 110, per the official English proficiency page. Paper-based TOEFL, PTE, and Cambridge English are not on the accepted list. Scores must be sent officially by the testing agency.

University of Utah IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

India is not on the university’s list of 28 native-English-speaking countries that receive an automatic waiver. Medium-of-instruction letters from Indian schools do not satisfy the requirement on their own. Indian applicants can still bypass a fresh IELTS or TOEFL score if they hold a completed degree from a regionally accredited institution in an English-speaking country within the last two years, or if they finish Level 8 of the university’s on-campus English Language Institute (ELI) pathway (undergraduate only).

University of Utah PG Programs and Entry Requirements

The University of Utah runs graduate coursework across the David Eccles School of Business, the Price College of Engineering, the College of Science, the Health Sciences campus, and the College of Humanities. Indian applications concentrate in computing, business analytics, information systems, and public health. Base tuition for graduate international students starts at around USD 32,932 (INR 31.42 Lakhs) per academic year across most programmes. See the course-wise fees breakdown for programme-level tuition.

Programme Duration Minimum Eligibility English Req. Min.
MS Computer Science 2 years Bachelor’s in CS or related with 3.0 GPA (around 75%) IELTS 6.5
MS Business Analytics 1 to 1.5 years Bachelor’s with 3.0 GPA, quantitative background preferred IELTS 6.5
MS Information Systems 1.5 to 2 years Bachelor’s with 3.0 GPA, any discipline accepted IELTS 6.5

MS Finance 1 year Bachelor’s with 3.0 GPA, quantitative background IELTS 6.5
Master of Architecture 3 years Bachelor’s degree, portfolio required IELTS 6.5
MS Materials Science and Engineering 2 years Bachelor’s in engineering or applied sciences, 3.0 GPA IELTS 6.5

Insider note: Utah graduate departments set their own supplemental deadlines and fee-waiver rules. Always check the department’s own page for your target programme before finalising your Common Application or SlideRoom submission.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of Utah page for your chosen program before applying.

International freshman tuition is USD 32,932 (INR 31.42 Lakhs) per year for the 2026-2027 cycle, plus a USD 300 (INR 28,620) international student fee and USD 75 (INR 7,155) international orientation fee.

Programme Duration Minimum Eligibility English Req. Min.
BS Data Science 4 years Class XII with Mathematics, unweighted 3.5 GPA equivalent (around 85%) IELTS 6.5
BS Computer Science 4 years Class XII with Mathematics, unweighted 3.5 GPA equivalent IELTS 6.5
BS Business Administration 4 years Class XII in any stream, unweighted 3.5 GPA equivalent IELTS 6.5
BS Biomedical Engineering 4 years Class XII with Mathematics and Physics, 3.5 GPA equivalent IELTS 6.5
BS Nursing 4 years Class XII with Biology and Chemistry, prerequisite courses required IELTS 6.5

Applicants who fall short of the standard English floor can still route in through the English Language Institute (ELI) Level 8 pathway, a Utah-run on-campus programme that admits into the undergraduate degree on completion of the top level.

University of Utah Eccles MBA Admissions

The David Eccles School of Business runs three MBA formats: Full-Time MBA, Professional MBA (part-time evening), and Executive MBA. The Full-Time MBA is the standard route for Indian applicants who need an F-1 visa. Professional and Executive tracks are structured for candidates already working in Salt Lake City or the Mountain West.

University of Utah Eccles MBA Test and Experience Requirements

  • Full-Time MBA: two-plus years of professional work experience preferred, GMAT, GRE, or Executive Assessment accepted, test waivers considered case by case.
  • Professional MBA: three-plus years of full-time work experience, in-person cohort based in Salt Lake City, not open to F-1 candidates.
  • Executive MBA: five-plus years with managerial responsibility, weekend classes, not open to F-1 candidates.

University of Utah Eccles MBA Interview Stage

Eccles uses a multi-round admissions cycle with rolling review. Shortlisted candidates receive a video or in-person interview invitation, typically two to four weeks after application review, with the admissions committee before a decision is issued. Indian Full-Time MBA applicants should submit early in the cycle since later rounds fill scholarship budgets fast and leave a tight window for F-1 visa processing.

Application fee is USD 65 (INR 6,201) on the Eccles portal. MBA tuition is set separately from the institution-wide base. See funding for Indian students for merit-based aid tracks like the Global MBA scholarship and department awards.

Planning note: Confirm current round dates on the Eccles admissions page before you plan your GMAT or GRE calendar. Indian F-1 candidates typically aim to submit two rounds before their intended intake to secure funding and I-20 timing.

University of Utah PhD Admissions and Funding

PhD admissions at the University of Utah run through the individual academic department. Every doctoral programme sets its own application window, funding package, and advisor-match process. Indian applicants concentrate in engineering, computer science, chemistry, biological sciences, and economics.

University of Utah PhD Application Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s in a related discipline with a strong academic record.
  • Statement of purpose naming faculty of interest and specific research questions.
  • Three letters of recommendation from academic referees who have taught or supervised you.
  • GRE: requirement varies by department, and many STEM programmes now list it as optional.
  • English proficiency: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80, or Duolingo 110 minimum.

University of Utah PhD Funding for Indian Students

Most funded PhD admits receive a package that covers full tuition, a stipend, and health insurance, structured as a Research Assistantship (RA) or Teaching Assistantship (TA). Stipend amounts vary by department and academic year and are set at the department level, not centrally. The institution estimates a full financial requirement of USD 53,237 (INR 50.79 Lakhs) per year for PhD I-20 purposes, of which funded students typically owe only a small portion out of pocket.

Insider note: Reach out to potential PhD supervisors two to three months before the department deadline. A supportive faculty response often precedes a funded offer rather than an admit without funding.

University of Utah Application Process

Undergraduate applicants use the Common Application. Graduate applicants apply through the University of Utah’s centralised graduate admissions system, which routes each file to the chosen department. The steps below run in the order most Indian applicants follow.

  1. Create an account on the University of Utah international admissions portal and pick your pathway (Freshman, Transfer, Graduate, Returning, or Second Bachelor’s).
  2. Complete the application form with personal, academic, and family details.
  3. Upload academic documents: Class XII marksheets (UG) or bachelor’s transcripts and degree (PG), with certified English translations where needed.
  4. Upload English proficiency scores for IELTS, TOEFL iBT, or Duolingo, or waiver documentation.
  5. Submit programme-specific materials such as SOP, LORs, CV, portfolio, or GRE/GMAT scores where required.
  6. Pay the application fee of USD 65 (INR 6,201) by credit card on the University of Utah international admissions portal.
  7. Upload I-20 financial documents (bank statement or affidavit showing one year of funds) before the intake’s I-20 deadline.
  8. Track application status on the applicant portal, allowing 7 to 10 business days for uploaded materials to reflect.

Decision timeline: Undergraduate freshman decisions are issued on a rolling basis, typically 7 to 10 business days after a complete file. Graduate decisions run by departmental committee, four to eight weeks after the deadline. Offer letters arrive by email with a portal link to accept and pay the enrolment deposit, usually by May 1 for Fall admits. Deferrals are handled department by department, with a one-time deferral common for documented reasons like a delayed visa slot.

University of Utah Documents Required for Indian Applicants

Documentation is submitted through the application portal in English. Indian applicants should keep certified translations of any regional-language transcripts ready and scan all originals in colour. The list below is paperwork-only, since academic thresholds live in the Eligibility section.

  • Valid Indian passport: biodata page scan, six-plus months validity beyond intended entry.
  • Class XII marksheet and passing certificate: for UG applicants.
  • Class X marksheet: as a supporting academic record.
  • Bachelor’s transcripts and degree certificate: for PG applicants, with certified English translation if needed.
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP): tailored to your target programme.
  • Letters of Recommendation (LORs): typically two for UG, three for PG.
  • CV or resume: covering education, work, projects, and publications.
  • English proficiency score report: IELTS, TOEFL iBT, or Duolingo sent officially by the testing agency.
  • GRE or GMAT score report: if the department requires it.
  • Financial affidavit and bank statement: covering one year of funds for I-20 issuance.
  • Passport-sized photograph: in the format specified on the portal.

University of Utah Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

The University of Utah publishes an institution-wide acceptance rate of around 86% across recent admission cycles, positioning it as a lightly selective public research university based on its own reporting.

How Selective Is University of Utah for Indian Applicants?

The 86% figure covers all applicants, domestic and international. The university does not publish a separate acceptance rate for Indian students, and admission depends on the department and level applied for. Popular graduate departments like Computer Science, Business Analytics, and the Eccles Full-Time MBA run tighter admission funnels than the institutional average, with cohort shortlisting often in the low double digits.

University of Utah Acceptance Rate Trend

The 86% institutional rate has held broadly steady over recent cycles, with holistic review, no strict GPA cutoff, and test-optional policy keeping the funnel wide. For a fuller view of Utah’s competitive standing across QS, THE, and US News, see the ranking band.

Insider note: Utah’s 86% institutional rate is not the number to target for competitive STEM master’s programmes. Expect single-digit to low-teen shortlist rates in MS Computer Science and MS Business Analytics cohorts, driven by capped seat counts and strong domestic pipelines.

USA Student Visa for University of Utah Admissions

Indian students admitted to the University of Utah require an F-1 student visa to enter the United States. The visa is issued by a US consulate after the university sends an approved I-20 form. The M-1 visa applies to vocational programmes and is not used for a Utah degree.

The F-1 process runs as follows. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (INR 33,390). Complete the DS-160 online form. Pay the visa application fee of USD 185 (INR 17,649). Book biometrics at a VFS centre. Attend the in-person visa interview at a US consulate in India (Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, or the New Delhi Embassy). Carry the I-20, admission letter, financial proof showing one year of funds (around USD 66,105, INR 63.06 Lakhs, for undergraduates), and academic records to the interview. After arrival, register with the University of Utah International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) within the SEVIS reporting window.

2026 update: US consulates in India have expanded student-visa slot availability during May to August each year. Book your visa slot as soon as the I-20 arrives to secure an interview date compatible with Utah’s semester start.

Tips for University of Utah Admissions

The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at the University of Utah.

  • Target Fall: primary intake with widest programme choice and healthier assistantship budgets.
  • Send IELTS early: Fall I-20 deadline is June 1, no room for late reports.
  • Contact PhD supervisors early: funded offers follow warm conversations, not cold applications.
  • Certify translations: convert regional-language transcripts through a WES-recognised translation service.
  • Retake IELTS at 6.0: Utah does not round below the 6.5 floor.
  • Show one-year funds: I-20 needs USD 33,307 (INR 31.78 Lakhs), not four years.
  • Use department contacts: Eccles and CS have India-specific coordinators.
