San Jose State University Application Deadlines for Indian Students

San Jose State University  runs three admission intakes each year, Fall, Spring, and Summer, and Fall is the primary intake where the largest set of master’s programs open for Indian applicants. Every application flows through Cal State Apply, the CSU-wide portal, per the SJSU international graduate deadlines page. The table below captures dates that are still live from August 1, 2026 onwards.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use USD 1 = ₹96.17 (August 2026). Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.

SJSU’s primary intake for Indian students is Fall (August start) — most master’s and undergraduate programs open here.

Two dates matter for every applicant: the application deadline, when the Cal State Apply form must be submitted, and the document deadline, which falls roughly 20 days later and covers transcripts, WES evaluations, and English scores. Missing either kills the application for that term.

San Jose State University Eligibility Requirements for Indian Applicants

SJSU’s institution-wide floor is a completed four-year bachelor’s degree for graduate programs and a Class XII qualification with roughly 65% for undergraduate freshmen. Program-specific thresholds sit higher, especially in engineering and computer science. Indian applicants should read both the university minimum and the department bar before shortlisting.

Academic Minimums

  • UG general entry: Class XII at around 65 percent, with Mathematics for engineering and computer science tracks.
  • PG general entry: Four-year bachelor’s degree with a GPA of at least 2.5 (Indian equivalent about 60 percent).
  • Engineering and CS master’s: GPA 3.0 or higher (Indian equivalent about 65 to 70 percent) in a related discipline.
  • MBA: Four-year bachelor’s, GMAT or GRE recommended if undergraduate GPA is below 3.0.

English Test Minimums

Every Indian applicant must clear one of SJSU’s accepted English tests unless a waiver applies. Graduate university minimums are IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80, PTE Academic 53, and Duolingo English Test 120. Undergraduate minimums are lower for non-engineering majors (IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 61, PTE 44, Duolingo 95) and match graduate levels for engineering. Scores must be less than two years old.

San Jose State University IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

Graduate applicants can waive the English test if they hold a bachelor’s or master’s from a US regionally accredited institution or from an approved English-speaking country such as Australia, Canada (excluding Quebec), New Zealand, or the United Kingdom. SJSU does not accept "English medium of instruction" as a substitute at the graduate level, so an Indian bachelor’s taught in English does not qualify. Undergraduate freshmen have a slightly broader waiver: three or more years of full-time study at an institution where English is the primary language of instruction. Applicants who studied at Indian English-medium schools may qualify under this rule and should upload evidence with the application.

San Jose State University PG Programs and Master’s Options

SJSU’s graduate catalogue is dominated by engineering, computing, and business tracks, which is where the bulk of Indian master’s applications go each cycle. The table lists the highest-demand programs with their institution-wide eligibility and English floors. For the full course-wise fees breakdown, see the SJSU course-wise fees breakdown. Base non-resident tuition sits at about $18,490 (₹17.78 Lakhs) per academic year for most master’s programs, calculated at $471 (₹45,296) per unit plus mandatory campus fees.

Programme Duration Minimum Eligibility English Req. Min.
MS Computer Science 2 years Bachelor’s in CS or related, GPA 3.0+ IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 80

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official SJSU page for your chosen program before applying.

San Jose State University UG Programs for International Freshmen

The undergraduate table lists high-demand majors for Indian freshmen. All undergraduate programs are considered impacted at SJSU, which means demand exceeds available seats and admission is competitive across every major, not just engineering. Explore the full course list for majors outside this shortlist.

Programme Duration Minimum Eligibility English Req. Min.
BS Computer Science 4 years Class XII 65%+ with Mathematics IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 80
BS Software Engineering 4 years Class XII 65%+ with Mathematics IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 80
BS Business Administration 4 years Class XII 60%+ IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 61
BS Mechanical Engineering 4 years Class XII 65%+ with Mathematics and Physics IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 80
BS Electrical Engineering 4 years Class XII 65%+ with Mathematics and Physics IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 80

Base undergraduate non-resident tuition sits around $21,010 (₹20.21 Lakhs) per academic year at 24 units of enrolment. Engineering freshmen are ranked using a modified eligibility index that adds math GPA to the standard criteria, so Class XII Mathematics marks carry extra weight in that pool.

San Jose State University MBA Admissions at Lucas Graduate School

SJSU’s Lucas Graduate School of Business runs two MBA variants that admit Indian applicants. Both apply through Cal State Apply with the same $70 (₹6,732) application fee. GMAT and GRE scores are not required by default, but Lucas recommends submitting one if your undergraduate GPA is below 3.0.

Early Career MBA

The Early Career MBA is a full-time cohort program aimed at applicants with limited or no work experience. Total program cost is around $55,465 (₹53.35 Lakhs). The Fall 2027 application deadline is April 1, 2027 with documents by April 20, 2027.

MBA for Professionals

The MBA for Professionals is designed for working professionals who continue in their jobs while studying part-time. Total program cost is around $48,694 (₹46.83 Lakhs). Admission for international applicants is granted on a case-by-case basis. Fall 2027 deadline is April 1, 2027, and a Spring 2027 start is also open with a deadline of October 1, 2026.

Insider note: Lucas Graduate School treats Indian bachelor’s degrees as three-year credentials and requires WES evaluation to confirm US equivalency. Indian applicants with three-year BCom or BA degrees may need a bridging year or a master’s to meet the four-year requirement, so build this into your timeline early.

For scholarship options across both MBA tracks, see the funding options for Indian students.

San Jose State University Doctoral Program Admissions

SJSU is primarily a master’s-focused campus but offers a small set of doctoral programs relevant to Indian applicants. The three active doctorates are the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), and a joint Ph.D. in Special Education run with UCSF and UC Berkeley.

Application Windows

Doctoral deadlines are program-specific and typically fall earlier than master’s cycles. Ed.D. and DNP admissions open on Cal State Apply for Fall entry, with application windows generally closing between December 2026 and February 2027. Indian applicants should contact the respective department well in advance to confirm current-cycle dates.

Funding and Assistantships

Unlike research-heavy Ph.D. universities, SJSU doctorates are structured as professional degrees rather than fully-funded research tracks. Graduate assistantships and departmental scholarships are limited. Review external funding through the SJSU scholarships portal and cost estimates on the fees page before applying.

San Jose State University Application Process

The end-to-end process for international applicants follows the CSU standard, with SJSU-specific document requirements layered on top. Every step is mandatory and skipping any one of them delays or voids the application.

  1. Create a Cal State Apply profile. Register at the Cal State Apply portal and select F-1 visa status during profile setup. Use the name exactly as printed on your passport.
  2. Pay the application fee. Submit the $70 (₹6,732) application fee at the point of submission on Cal State Apply. Fee waivers are not available for international applicants.
  3. Order a WES, ACEI, ECE, or TEC evaluation of your Indian transcripts. This converts your bachelor’s degree into US GPA equivalents.
  4. Send English test scores directly from ETS (TOEFL), IELTS, PTE, or Duolingo to SJSU. School code for TOEFL is 4687.
  5. Upload passport and visa documents to the SJSU Admissions Document Upload portal. Passport must be valid at least one year from the intended entry date.
  6. Complete the Declaration of Finance form using SJSU’s specific template and attach a bank statement showing minimum funds. Substitute forms are not accepted.
  7. Submit program-specific documents such as SOP, LORs, and CV directly to the department if required.

Admission Decisions and Offer Timeline

Decisions are typically released 8 to 12 weeks after the document deadline. Admitted students receive a conditional offer letter along with the I-20 form needed for the F-1 visa. Deposit and enrolment confirmation are then due within a set window, usually 30 to 45 days from the offer date. Deferrals are considered on a case-by-case basis by Graduate Admissions.

San Jose State University Documents Required

Every international application to SJSU carries the same paperwork checklist regardless of level, with department-specific additions layered on top. Prepare each item well before the document deadline.

  • Passport copy valid for at least one year from intended entry date.
  • Official transcripts from every college attended, sent through WES, ACEI, ECE, or TEC for evaluation.
  • Class XII certificate and marksheet (undergraduate applicants only).
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate and consolidated marksheet (graduate applicants).
  • Statement of Purpose if required by the department.
  • Two Letters of Recommendation from academic or professional referees, department-specific.
  • Curriculum Vitae or resume covering education, work experience, and projects.
  • English test score report sent directly from the testing agency.
  • SJSU Declaration of Finance form completed on the official template.
  • Bank letter or statement showing the minimum non-negotiable funds required by SJSU.
  • GRE or GMAT score report if the department requires it.
  • Current US visa copy for applicants already in the United States.

San Jose State University Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

SJSU is an access-oriented CSU campus, which means it admits most applicants who meet its stated requirements. The overall admit rate hovers near 80%, placing it among the more welcoming public research universities in California for international applicants. Indian applicants do well when they meet the GPA and English floors and submit clean documentation on time.

SJSU Undergraduate International Admit Rate

The international undergraduate admit rate has run between 72% and 78% across recent Fall cycles based on SJSU-published applicant and admit counts. Engineering and computer science majors sit at the more competitive end of this band because those programs use the modified eligibility index that weights math GPA.

SJSU Graduate Admit Rate for Indian Applicants

Graduate admit rates vary sharply by program. MS Computer Science and MS Software Engineering are the most selective for Indian applicants, with departmental admits requiring GPA 3.0 or higher and TOEFL 80+ as bar-clearing thresholds. MS Data Analytics and MS Information Systems typically admit at higher rates for applicants who clear the university minimum.

Insider note: SJSU’s ranking band (top 210 US universities by Collegedunia Study Abroad) sits well below Ivy League tiers, but the Silicon Valley location generates return-on-investment that top-100 inland campuses struggle to match. See the full ranking band for context.

USA Student Visa for San Jose State University Applicants

Indian students admitted to SJSU need an F-1 Student Visa to enter the United States. SJSU issues the Form I-20 electronically after you accept the admission offer and submit financial documentation. Using the I-20, pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of $350 (₹33,660), complete the DS-160 online visa form, book a visa interview at a US consulate in India, and pay the visa application fee. Bring the I-20, admission letter, SEVIS fee receipt, DS-160 confirmation, financial documents, and academic records to the interview. F-1 visa holders can enter the United States up to 30 days before the I-20 program start date.

Planning note: Visa slot availability at Indian consulates tightens between May and July for August start dates. Book the SEVIS I-901 payment within a week of accepting your SJSU offer, then secure the earliest available DS-160 interview slot to leave buffer for administrative processing if flagged.

Tips for San Jose State University Admissions

The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at San Jose State University over recent cycles.

  • Apply in the first month of the intake window, not the last, because impacted majors often close before the stated deadline.
  • Order WES early, since Indian transcript evaluation can take 4 to 6 weeks and delays here miss the document deadline.
  • Retake IELTS if you are below 6.5 for engineering, because department minimums often override the university floor of 6.0.
  • Use the SJSU Declaration of Finance form only, as banking letters on other templates get rejected.
  • Include math GPA prominently in your engineering application, since it feeds the modified eligibility index.
  • Confirm your bachelor’s is treated as four years by WES before applying to master’s programs, especially for three-year BA or BCom degrees.

San Jose State University Admissions Checklist

The following steps cover what Indian applicants typically complete on a Fall 2027 timeline.

  • 10 months before deadline: Register for IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE and book a test date.
  • 8 months before deadline: Send Indian transcripts to WES, ACEI, ECE, or TEC for evaluation.
  • 6 months before deadline: Draft SOP and request LORs from two academic or professional referees.

  • Within 20 days of application: Ensure all documents reach SJSU before the document deadline.
  • On admission: Pay SEVIS I-901 fee, complete DS-160, and book F-1 visa interview slot.

SJSU rewards Indian applicants who plan their WES evaluation, English test, and Cal State Apply submission on a clean nine-month runway. Fall 2027 is where the widest program set opens, so target that intake and use Spring 2027 only if you cannot wait a full year.

Scholarship

  • I didn't receive any scholarships during my course.
  • There are fewer scholarship opportunities for international students at SJSU.
  • I am not much aware of the eligibility criteria. I don't know about the award amount for the scholarship. None of my batchmates receive scholarships, as far as I remember.
  • I don't have much idea about how many students on average receive scholarships each year.

Scholarship

  • Very less scholarships available. No one gets scholarship in the first semester generally. Thereafter it is too competitive. Also the funding with the university is too low to give multiple scholarships.
  • No one in my batch have received any form of scholarship till now. I do not have much idea about the scholarship amount. But since the tuition fee is less, the scholarship amount is also less.

Scholarship

  • As an international student, we do have one scholarship and I applied for it beforehand but I didn't get any responses, neither from my batchmates. I don't know how it works but as far as my knowledge concerns, we have to maintain a 3.8 + GPA score in order to qualify for scholarships. I'm in my first semester right now so I don't know much about it but once I complete my first year, I will have a better idea.
  • I never heard of anyone who got the scholarships till now and to be frank, the scholarship amount is mentioned on their portal but as of now I don't know anyone who got the scholarships so I have no idea what exact amount they pay.

Overview

SJSU is pretty good. They offer some well structured curicullum and the faculties here are well experienced. Learning wise this college is exceptional, but for jobs we need to apply outside as there is no placements and companies coming to college. Most of the universities here does not provide campus placements like India. Each student should approach to the company employers and apply.

My university does not provide any scholarships for Data Analytics course
