Washington University in St. Louis admissions ride Common Application rounds for freshmen and program-set deadlines for graduate applicants. Class XII around 85 percent with IELTS 7.0 sets the UG floor, and a Bachelor’s at 3.0/4.0 GPA with IELTS 6.5 sets the PG floor.

  • Fall 2027 deadlines: Early Decision I closes 2 November 2026, Regular Decision 4 January 2027.

Popular Indian-student picks include MS Computer Science, M.Eng. Computer Science and Engineering, Olin MBA, and MS Data Analytics and Statistics. Fall 2027 anchors the WashU admissions calendar, with graduate rounds running through early 2027. For a broader campus and rankings snapshot, see the Washington University in St. Louis overview.

The Common Application for the 2026-2027 cycle opened 1 August 2026, and undergraduate Early Decision I and Early Action close 2 November 2026. Graduate portals via WashU’s Slate system are accepting Fall 2027 applications through program-set deadlines. The application fee is USD 75 (INR 7,152) for undergraduate and McKelvey Engineering entries, USD 45 (INR 4,291) for Arts and Sciences graduate entries, and free for Olin MBA.

Washington University in St. Louis Eligibility for Indian Students

WashU sets separate academic and English thresholds for undergraduate and graduate applicants. Indian students should target the higher competitive bands, since the university admits below its stated minimums only in unusual cases and treats the numbers as floors rather than benchmarks.

  • UG general entry: Class XII around 85 to 95 percent for competitive standing.
  • UG testing: SAT or ACT optional for Fall 2027; strong scores still lift a profile.
  • UG English: IELTS 7.0, TOEFL iBT 100, Duolingo 130 (Fall 2027 cycle).
  • PG general entry: Bachelor’s from an accredited institution at 3.0/4.0 GPA (roughly 75 percent).
  • PG English: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 90, Duolingo 125, Gateway English 495.
  • PG teaching assistants: Programs assisting instruction may require TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7.0.
  • GRE: Optional at McKelvey and Olin for the 2026-2027 cycle.

Program-level asks can add prerequisites. MS Computer Science, for example, expects a computer science background plus prior coursework in Introduction to Computer Science and Data Structures, or completion of these at the start of the program.

Washington University in St. Louis IELTS Waiver for Indian Applicants

Graduate applicants from India can be exempt from the IELTS or TOEFL requirement under three conditions listed on the WashU Office of Graduate Studies waiver policy. First, a Bachelor’s degree completed within the past five years from an English-medium institution qualifies, since India is on WashU’s Appendix B list of English-official-language countries. Second, two or more years of continuous full-time work in the United States within the past four years qualifies. Third, two or more years of prior study at an English-medium institution in an approved country qualifies.

At the undergraduate level, WashU only waives testing for candidates who completed three or more years of schooling in an English-medium United States high school. Indian Class XII graduates studying at Indian boards should therefore plan to submit IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo scores by the December 2026 test window at the latest.

Planning note: WashU stopped accepting SAT or ACT scores in lieu of English proficiency exams from the Fall 2027 cycle onward, so Indian applicants must submit IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo unless a listed waiver applies.

Washington University in St. Louis PG Programs and English Scores

WashU’s postgraduate portfolio for Indian students concentrates in the McKelvey School of Engineering and the Olin Business School, with a strong Arts and Sciences PhD line. Base tuition sits around USD 61,750 (INR 58.89 Lakhs) per year for full-time master’s programs, though per-credit rates vary by school. For a detailed per-credit and per-program cost breakdown, see the WashU fees breakdown by program on the full course-wise fees breakdown.

Washington University in St. Louis Freshman Requirements

WashU accepts international freshmen through the Common Application or Coalition Application into four undergraduate schools: Arts and Sciences, McKelvey Engineering, Olin Business, and the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts. Indian applicants typically apply to a specific school on the form and can request a second-school review if unsure of fit.

The middle 50 percent SAT band for the admitted freshman class sits at 1520 to 1580 and the middle 50 percent ACT band at 34 to 35, though only about 29 percent of admitted students submitted SAT scores in the last cycle. Rigour of secondary school record, GPA, and essays sit at the top of WashU’s eight very important admission factors.

Washington University in St. Louis Olin MBA Admissions

The Olin Full-Time MBA runs four fixed rounds for the Fall 2027 intake plus a rolling window after mid-April 2027. Indian applicants get one important cost break: no application fee is charged for the Full-Time MBA.

RoundSubmission DeadlineDecision Notification

Washington University in St. Louis MBA Testing Policy

Olin treats GMAT and GRE scores as recommended but not required. Applicants can skip standardised testing if they can show quantitative preparation through undergraduate GPA, work experience, or an advanced credential such as JD, MD, PhD, CPA, or CFA. The class-average GMAT for recent admits sits around 700, so Indian applicants without a heavy quant background typically benefit from submitting.

Washington University in St. Louis MBA Interview Format

Olin uses a two-part interview flow. Every applicant completes a required video interview through the application platform as an initial evaluation step. Selected candidates then receive an invitation for an interview with the admissions team, either on campus or virtually. Work experience is not a formal requirement, but most admits carry two to five years of relevant industry work.

Note: MBA-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Olin Full-Time MBA page before applying.

Washington University in St. Louis PhD Admissions

WashU’s PhD calendar splits by school. McKelvey Engineering opens Fall 2027 applications on 1 September 2026 with a 1 December 2026 deadline for full consideration, while Arts and Sciences departments run from 1 September through early December 2026. Decisions typically land by mid-March 2027 across both.

Washington University in St. Louis PhD Funding

WashU’s PhD offers to admitted students at McKelvey and in Arts and Sciences typically bundle a full tuition waiver and a stipend covering living costs in St. Louis. Health insurance is included through the university plan. Indian PhD admits should ask each department for the current stipend figure at offer stage, since amounts move each academic year and differ across programs.

Washington University in St. Louis PhD Timeline

Applications submitted by the December deadline move through faculty committee review from January through early March. Shortlisted candidates receive invitations for virtual or on-campus interviews. Final decisions are released by 15 March 2027 across McKelvey, with Arts and Sciences following a similar March window. Accepted candidates must respond by the national 15 April 2027 reply deadline.

Note: PhD-specific entry requirements, funding, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official WashU Office of Graduate Studies page for your chosen program before applying.

Washington University in St. Louis Application Process

The undergraduate route runs entirely through the Common Application, while graduate applicants create an account on WashU’s Slate portal at gradadmit.washu.edu/apply. Both flows are essay-heavy and reward early document assembly. For a broader course catalogue with fee anchors, see the full WashU programs list.

  1. Create a Common Application account on the Common Application platform, which opened 1 August 2026 for the 2026-2027 cycle, and add Washington University in St. Louis to your college list.
  2. Pay the application fee of USD 75 (INR 7,152) through the Common App when submitting to WashU, or request the fee waiver if you also file a WashU financial aid application.
  3. Complete the WashU-specific supplemental essays and select your undergraduate school (Arts and Sciences, McKelvey, Olin, or Sam Fox).
  4. Ask your school counsellor to submit the Secondary School Report and transcripts, and have two teachers upload recommendation letters directly.
  5. Submit your IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo score report by the December 2026 test window at the latest.
  6. Graduate applicants instead sign into WashU Slate, pick a program, upload transcripts, SOP, resume, and references, then pay USD 45 to 75 (INR 4,291 to 7,152) depending on the school (Olin MBA is fee-free).

Washington University in St. Louis Admission Decisions

WashU releases undergraduate decisions on a fixed calendar: 11 December 2026 for Early Decision I, 23 December 2026 for Early Action, 12 February 2027 for Early Decision II, and 1 April 2027 for Regular Decision. ED I and ED II candidates who accept must reply by 4 January 2027 and 1 March 2027 respectively, while EA and RD admits reply by 1 May 2027. Graduate admits from McKelvey and Arts and Sciences typically hear within four to six weeks of application completion, with final PhD decisions consolidated by mid-March 2027. Deferral requests are handled case-by-case through the admissions office and are more likely to succeed at the graduate level than at UG.

Washington University in St. Louis Documents Required for Application

Document assembly is where most Indian applicants lose time. Start pulling paperwork six to eight weeks before your first target deadline, especially official transcripts and financial evidence for the I-20.

Undergraduate documents for the Common Application:

  • Completed Common Application or Coalition form with WashU supplement
  • Secondary School Report and counsellor letter
  • Two teacher recommendation letters (subject teachers preferred)
  • Official Class X and Class XII marksheets in English
  • English proficiency score report sent by the testing agency
  • Passport bio page copy
  • Optional SAT or ACT score report (test-optional for Fall 2027)

Graduate documents for the WashU Slate portal:

  • Completed Slate application form for your program
  • Statement of Purpose (one to two pages)
  • Curriculum Vitae or resume
  • Three letters of recommendation submitted through Slate
  • Official Bachelor’s transcripts and degree certificate
  • English proficiency score report
  • Passport bio page copy
  • Financial documents (bank statements or affidavits) for I-20 issuance after admission

Slate accepts unofficial transcripts at the application stage and requests official copies only after admission. Financial evidence must show 12 months of tuition plus living costs.

Washington University in St. Louis Acceptance Rate

WashU’s 2025-2026 Common Data Set records an overall undergraduate acceptance rate of 11.9 percent, with 3,968 admits from 33,283 applicants. Graduate rates are set at the program level and are generally more forgiving than UG at McKelvey master’s, but competitive at Olin MBA and Arts and Sciences PhD. WashU sits at QS World 162 for 2027 and THE World 67 for 2026, so the ranking band supports the tight selectivity numbers.

Washington University in St. Louis Undergraduate Trends

Early Decision I admits at roughly 27 percent, more than double the overall rate. This is not a signal of easier standards but of binding commitment weighing heavily in the yield calculation. Indian applicants with a clear WashU preference and a strong Class XII record often use ED I as their leverage move. Regular Decision remains the harder path, with class rigour, essays, and demonstrated intellectual character weighing more than test scores.

Washington University in St. Louis Graduate Rates

McKelvey master’s programs are estimated to admit in the 30 to 45 percent range for Indian applicants meeting the 3.0 GPA and IELTS 6.5 floors, based on program-level admission patterns (university does not publish an official institutional figure). Olin Full-Time MBA runs at roughly 30 to 35 percent selectivity. PhD programs across McKelvey and Arts and Sciences run in the single digits, driven by faculty match and funding limits rather than raw application volume.

Key insight: WashU’s holistic review weights the essay-plus-recommendation package more than raw test scores. Indian applicants with average IELTS but a differentiated project or research portfolio have historically closed offers.

USA F-1 Student Visa Process for Washington University in St. Louis

Admitted Indian students at WashU need an F-1 student visa for degree-length study. WashU’s Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) issues the I-20 form after admission and after you submit financial documentation showing 12 months of tuition and living costs. Once you receive the I-20, pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (INR 33,376), complete the DS-160 form, pay the US visa fee of USD 185 (INR 17,642), and book a visa interview at a US consulate in India (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad).

At the interview, carry the I-20, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS receipt, admit letter, financial proof, and academic documents. F-1 holders can enter the United States up to 30 days before the program start date. After arrival, complete SEVIS check-in with OISS within the required window and attend the mandatory international orientation. F-1 holders are eligible for on-campus work up to 20 hours a week and can apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT) after meeting eligibility criteria.

2026 update: US visa appointment wait times at Indian consulates continue to fluctuate, so book your slot within two weeks of receiving your I-20 and plan for a July 2027 interview at the latest for a Fall 2027 start.

Overview

My overall experience at my college has been amazing. I got to learn a lot from my friends and faculty. I also got involved into extracurriculars being part of Student Coordinating Council and International Student Association.

Scholarship

I got the Emerging Leaders in Health Equity Scholarship which 36000$. There was no separate application process for it.

Overview

I loved the balance between academics and fun. I loved how collaborative friendly and happy it is. And I love the flexibility across schools. For example, I am majoring and double minoring across three of the five schools. I learned about this college through word of mouth in my town. It is always very popular among high scholars in my town and so many people talk about it and I was encouraged to apply.

Overview

WashU is a great school offering a program focused on Movement System Impairments, which is what I am interested in practicing as a clinician. It is also a top-ranked program and the city of St. Louis is very reasonable to live in.

Overview

It was the best value because I got a full scholarship/highest rank. Also when I visited I could imagine a high quality of life for myself due to the beautiful dorms and yummy food. It was big enough that I could meet new people every day if I wanted to but not big enough that I would feel lost.
