Washington University in St. Louis Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions
Ques. What is the maximum scholarship funding an Indian student can receive at Washington University in St. Louis?
Ans. The largest stack is the McDonnell International Scholars Academy PhD track. It combines full tuition remission worth USD 65,000 (INR 62 Lakhs) per year with a USD 41,000 (INR 39 Lakhs) stipend, USD 2,000 (INR 1.9 Lakhs) travel allowance and USD 1,500 (INR 1.4 Lakhs) relocation grant. Total value crosses USD 300,000 (INR 2.85 Crore) across five years.
Ques. When should Indian applicants apply for scholarships at Washington University in St. Louis?
Ans. UG Signature Scholar applicants must submit by December 16, 2026 for the Fall 2027 intake. Olin MBA candidates should apply in Round 1 by October 15, 2026 for the best merit odds. External Indian scholarships such as Fulbright-Nehru and Inlaks close between March and May each year, so target the March to May 2027 window for a Fall 2027 arrival.
Ques. Do I need a separate scholarship application for Washington University in St. Louis awards?
Ans. Only three programs require an extra step. Signature Scholars ask for a 250-word Pathway short answer plus a finalist interview in early March. The McDonnell Academy requires a distinct fellowship application after PhD or master’s admission. All other merit awards, including Olin MBA scholarships and McKelvey Engineering awards, are decided from the standard admission file.
Ques. What academic profile do Indian applicants need to win a Washington University in St. Louis merit scholarship?
Ans. Signature Scholars historically go to applicants with 95%+ Class 12 marks and a demonstrated leadership record. Olin MBA merit typically clusters at a GMAT score of 720 or above, or a GRE score of 328 or above. PhD full funding is automatic once admitted, so the true bar is program admission itself, which asks for a 3.5 out of 4 GPA equivalent and a strong research fit statement.
Ques. Does a Washington University in St. Louis scholarship cover living costs in St. Louis?
Ans. UG merit awards cover tuition only, so Indian students still budget USD 22,000 (INR 21 Lakhs) per year for room, board, insurance and personal expenses in St. Louis. PhD funding packages include a stipend that meets local living costs since St. Louis sits below the U.S. metro average. McDonnell fellows also receive a travel and relocation allowance on top of the stipend.

- I like the amiable and receptive environment of my college. We are given the liberty of doing projects and research in the field of our interest. The faculty is super supportive and helpful. They are always willing to help students and guide through the appropriate resources. They have a communication lab which helps students in their assignments and presentations. I just love this resource as it is very important for students like us whose first language is not English.
- They had a unique concept of public health with intersection of social work and social policy.
Dislikes
- I am a bit uncomfortable with the expenses of this program. I think its pretty expensive. There should be more scholarships for students like us who hold a professional medical degree from India. Also, there should be more research around medical field since my school focuses more on social work side of public health and less on clinical side.
Scholarship
I got the Emerging Leaders in Health Equity Scholarship which 36000$. There was no separate application process for it.
My overall experience at my college has been amazing. I got to learn a lot from my friends and faculty. I also got involved into extracurriculars being part of Student Coordinating Council and International Student Association.
I loved the balance between academics and fun. I loved how collaborative friendly and happy it is. And I love the flexibility across schools. For example, I am majoring and double minoring across three of the five schools. I learned about this college through word of mouth in my town. It is always very popular among high scholars in my town and so many people talk about it and I was encouraged to apply.
WashU is a great school offering a program focused on Movement System Impairments, which is what I am interested in practicing as a clinician. It is also a top-ranked program and the city of St. Louis is very reasonable to live in.
It was the best value because I got a full scholarship/highest rank. Also when I visited I could imagine a high quality of life for myself due to the beautiful dorms and yummy food. It was big enough that I could meet new people every day if I wanted to but not big enough that I would feel lost.
