Washington University in St. Louis vs Peer Universities

The following peers are the private American research universities Indian MS and MBA applicants most often cross-shop with WashU on cost, rank and STEM designation.

WashU stands out for its top-30 global position in medicine and finance research combined with a St. Louis cost base 30% cheaper than Boston or New York peers. The ARWU Finance rank of #6 and THE Medical rank of #31 give MS Biostatistics and MS Finance applicants a research pedigree few peers on this list match.

Washington University in St. Louis is the right pick for an Indian applicant who wants a top-30 global research credential in medicine, life sciences or finance and can absorb a total investment of ₹ 90 Lakh against a median $ 126,773 Olin MBA salary. The MS in USA STEM designation on most McKelvey programs, plus a low-cost Midwest campus, makes the ROI defensible inside three post-OPT years.

It is not the right pick for applicants targeting Bay Area tech recruiting at scale or a large brand-name premium; a candidate whose primary target is Silicon Valley placement should weigh USC or a UC system option before finalising Washington University in St. Louis.

Washington University in St. Louis FAQs

Ques. How long does STEM OPT last for WashU MS graduates?

Ans. Indian students on F-1 visas who graduate from a STEM-designated MS at Washington University in St. Louis qualify for 12 months of standard Optional Practical Training and a 24-month STEM OPT extension, for a total of 36 months of post-completion work authorisation. Most McKelvey MS programs, including MS Computer Science and MS Data Analytics, carry the STEM CIP code, so the extension is automatic on a valid I-983 training plan.

Ques. Can Indian applicants get a GRE waiver at WashU?

Ans. WashU treats the GRE as recommended for MS Computer Science, MS Biostatistics and MS Engineering Management, and it is optional for the Brown School MSW and MPH tracks. Indian applicants with a first-class bachelor’s from an IIT, NIT or top NIRF-100 institution can apply without a GRE score and are still competitive, though a strong GRE quantitative section above 165 lifts the application into the top tercile of the pool.

Ques. Does WashU accept 3-year Indian bachelor’s degrees for MS admission?

Ans. WashU accepts a 3-year bachelor’s from an Indian institution recognised by UGC on a case-by-case basis, typically when the applicant has completed a masters or a first-class honours degree with a WES course-by-course evaluation. Applicants with a 3-year BCom or BA from a Bengaluru or Kolkata university should file WES ICAP evaluation early and add a note to the academic statement explaining the credential structure.

Ques. What is the application fee at WashU for Indian students?

Ans. The graduate application fee at Washington University in St. Louis is $ 80 for most masters programs and $ 100 for Olin MBA, payable by credit card at submission. WashU offers a fee waiver for McDonnell Academy applicants, alumni of partner Indian institutions and applicants who attended a WashU virtual recruiting event in Bengaluru, Delhi or Mumbai during the admissions cycle.

Ques. Are Indian education loans accepted for WashU tuition?

Ans. Indian lenders including SBI Global Ed-Vantage, HDFC Credila, Bank of Baroda, Avanse and Prodigy Finance sanction education loans to WashU on the strength of its top-200 QS position and I-20 issuance record. Collateral-free loans up to ₹ 40 Lakh are standard, with secured loans up to ₹ 1.5 Crore covering full tuition and living costs for a two-year MS or MBA.

Ques. What are the part-time work rules on an F-1 visa at WashU?

Ans. Indian students on F-1 visas at WashU can work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during the semester and 40 hours per week during breaks, at an hourly wage between $ 12 and 18. Off-campus work needs Curricular Practical Training, requiring one full academic year of enrolment first, or an economic-hardship EAD authorised by USCIS.

Ques. What financial proof is needed for an F-1 visa to WashU?

Ans. Indian applicants must show liquid funds covering the first academic year at WashU, roughly $ 88,000 to 96,000 (₹ 83.7 to 91.4 Lakh), through a bank balance certificate, fixed deposit receipts and a sponsor affidavit on the I-134 form. Education loan sanction letters from an Indian lender are accepted as part of the financial proof and cover the tuition line item on the I-20.

Ques. Does WashU offer online masters programs for Indian students?

Ans. WashU offers a limited online masters portfolio, including online MSW at the Brown School and online MS Cybersecurity at McKelvey, both of which admit Indian students who study from India. Online programs do not carry an F-1 visa or STEM OPT eligibility, so applicants targeting American work outcomes should choose an on-campus MS at the Danforth campus instead.

Overview

My overall experience at my college has been amazing. I got to learn a lot from my friends and faculty. I also got involved into extracurriculars being part of Student Coordinating Council and International Student Association.

Campus Life

9

The campus life is extremely engaging and fun. They have our own baseball and football teams. They also have our own gym. We have a number of student associations to cater to students' needs. There are also a number of concerts on campus from eminent singers and performers.

Overview

I loved the balance between academics and fun. I loved how collaborative friendly and happy it is. And I love the flexibility across schools. For example, I am majoring and double minoring across three of the five schools. I learned about this college through word of mouth in my town. It is always very popular among high scholars in my town and so many people talk about it and I was encouraged to apply.

Fees

They have a need-aware admissions policy and they also meet all demonstrated need I believe. It makes an environment in the school in which all students may feel passionate about what they are studying and can be there without financial concerns. Everyone given their unique backgrounds brings unique perspectives.

Overview

WashU is a great school offering a program focused on Movement System Impairments, which is what I am interested in practicing as a clinician. It is also a top-ranked program and the city of St. Louis is very reasonable to live in.

Fees

It is a 3-year program with 3 semesters each year. Each academic semester is the same cost and each clinical experience has its own cost that is very reduced compared to a clinical semester.

Overview

It was the best value because I got a full scholarship/highest rank. Also when I visited I could imagine a high quality of life for myself due to the beautiful dorms and yummy food. It was big enough that I could meet new people every day if I wanted to but not big enough that I would feel lost.
