Eligibility for University of Maryland Baltimore County

UMBC’s academic thresholds are set at the university level, with individual departments adding coursework and GPA requirements above these floors. Indian applicants should read the eligibility rules against India-specific grade equivalences, since UMBC uses the US 4.0 GPA scale to benchmark international transcripts.

  • UG general entry: Class XII completed with an aggregate of around 75 percent or equivalent, from CBSE, ICSE, or a recognised state board.
  • UG STEM programs: Class XII with Mathematics studied through Class XII, plus around 80 percent aggregate for competitive majors like Computer Science and Engineering.
  • PG general entry: A four-year bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with a minimum 3.0 GPA on the 4.0 scale, which maps to roughly 60 to 65 percent under Indian grading.
  • PG STEM entry: A minimum 3.0 GPA, with computer science, engineering, and data science departments preferring 3.3+ (around 70 percent) and specific prerequisite coursework.
  • PhD entry: A master’s degree in a related discipline is preferred; strong applicants with a four-year bachelor’s and research experience are considered on merit.

UMBC accepts multiple English proficiency tests, and undergraduate and graduate floors differ slightly. Verify the exact minimum on your program’s own page before submitting.

UMBC IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

UMBC waives the English proficiency requirement where the applicant has completed a full degree taught in English or their prior schooling was medium-of-instruction English. Indian applicants who studied at English-medium CBSE, ICSE, or state-board schools qualify to request an MOI waiver using an official school-issued letter. Applicants who earned a bachelor’s from an English-medium Indian university may also request the waiver at PG entry. Submit the MOI or degree-medium letter directly to the admissions office alongside the transcripts.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official UMBC international page for your chosen program before applying.

UMBC’s undergraduate model uses a semester system with 120 credits over four years, and international freshmen are placed on the university’s four-year advising track. Freshmen who apply by 1 November are considered for the Scholars Programs and general merit awards ranging USD 1,000 to 15,000 (around INR 0.94 to 14.17 Lakhs).

Insider note: UMBC’s Meyerhoff Scholars Program is domestic-only, but Indian applicants remain competitive for CWIT, Humanities Scholars, and Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars. Applying by 1 November unlocks the full scholarship consideration pool.

University of Maryland Baltimore County MBA Admissions

UMBC does not offer a traditional two-year full-time MBA. Its business graduate offerings run through the Master of Professional Studies (MPS) track and the specialised master’s degrees in cybersecurity, health information technology, and data science. Indian applicants targeting an MBA at UMBC should consider these MPS programs as the closest equivalent.

UMBC MPS Program Structure

The MPS is a professional master’s designed for working adults, typically completed in 1.5 to 2 years across evening classes and online cohorts. It replaces the traditional MBA in UMBC’s portfolio and is available in tracks including Cybersecurity, Data Science, and Technical Management. Base tuition sits inside the graduate range of USD 25,920 to 27,126 (around INR 24.49 to 25.63 Lakhs) per year.

UMBC MPS Eligibility for Indian Applicants

Applicants need a four-year bachelor’s with a 3.0 GPA minimum (around 65 percent). Work experience is preferred but not mandatory for most MPS tracks. GMAT and GRE are not required for MPS admissions, unlike traditional MBA programs. There is no interview stage for most MPS tracks; the department reviews the SOP, LORs, and transcripts directly.

Applicants seeking a full MBA experience should look at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, a separate institution. UMBC’s own postgraduate business route is the MPS, priced and structured for domain-focused professionals rather than generalist management.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official UMBC international page for your chosen program before applying.

University of Maryland Baltimore County PhD Programs

UMBC’s PhD portfolio spans computer science, information systems, biological sciences, chemistry, engineering, public policy, and psychology. Funded PhD applicants apply through departmental priority rounds, most of which close by 15 December 2026 for Fall 2027. Missing the priority round removes an applicant from the assistantship pool almost entirely.

UMBC PhD Funding and Stipends

Doctoral funding at UMBC is generous by US public-university standards. Confirmed 2026-27 rates from the graduate school:

  • PhD Teaching Assistantship: USD 1,139.52 biweekly, around USD 29,627 (INR 27.99 Lakhs) per year, plus tuition remission.
  • PhD Research Assistantship: USD 32,000 to 35,000 (INR 30.24 to 33.07 Lakhs) annually depending on the department and grant.
  • Biology PhD floor: Minimum USD 32,320 (INR 30.54 Lakhs) per year across the department.
  • Health coverage: Included with assistantships, alongside tuition remission for both fall and spring semesters.

UMBC PhD Application Steps

Doctoral applicants submit the UMBC Graduate School application, transcripts, three LORs, a research statement, CV, and English-proficiency scores. Some departments require the GRE, though many have waived it post-2022; verify on the department page. Shortlisted applicants typically get faculty video interviews between January and February 2027, with offers issued in February and March.

Insider note: Reach out to potential PhD advisors by early November with a short research pitch. UMBC PhD offers are department-driven, and a faculty champion often decides the funded slot months before the formal admissions decision.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official UMBC PhD funding page for your chosen program before applying.

University of Maryland Baltimore County Application Process

UMBC uses two application platforms depending on the level: undergraduates apply through the Common Application, while graduate and doctoral applicants use the UMBC Graduate School’s own portal. Both cycles for Fall 2027 are already open. Follow the steps in order.

  1. Create your account on the appropriate portal — the Common Application for UG (Fall 2027 cycle opened 1 August 2026) or the UMBC Graduate application for PG and PhD (rolling from 1 September 2026).
  2. Fill in the personal, academic, and program-selection sections. Graduate applicants select the specific department and degree track at this stage.
  3. Upload unofficial transcripts and Class XII or bachelor’s marksheets. Official transcripts sent through a credential evaluator such as WES may be requested after admission.
  4. Submit the statement of purpose, resume, and letters of recommendation. UG applicants use the Common App essay; PG applicants write a program-specific SOP of around 500 to 1,000 words.
  5. Send English test scores directly from IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or Duolingo to UMBC’s institution code. MOI waiver applicants upload the letter here instead.
  6. Pay the application fee on the portal: USD 50 (around INR 4,725) for undergraduate on Common App, or USD 75 (around INR 7,088) for graduate and PhD on the UMBC Grad app.
  7. Submit and track your status through the Common App dashboard or the myUMBC applicant portal.

UMBC Admission Decision Timeline

UG Early Action decisions release mid-January 2027, Regular Decision by 1 April 2027. Graduate decisions are rolling from January through May 2027 depending on the department. Admitted students confirm by paying an enrolment deposit and receive the I-20 form for the F-1 visa. Deferrals of up to one year are allowed on written request.

Documents Required for University of Maryland Baltimore County

Assemble the following documentation before you begin the application. UMBC accepts scanned uploads at the application stage; certified originals or WES-evaluated copies may be requested only after admission.

  • Passport: Scan of the biographical page, valid at least six months past the intended date of entry.
  • Academic transcripts: Class XII marksheet and passing certificate for UG; bachelor’s transcripts and degree certificate for PG and PhD.
  • English test score report: Sent directly from IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or Duolingo, or the MOI waiver letter from your school or university.
  • Statement of purpose: UG applicants use the Common App essay; PG applicants submit a program-specific SOP.
  • Letters of recommendation: Two for UG (through Common App), three for graduate and PhD applicants, uploaded via the recommender portal.
  • Resume or CV: Mandatory for all graduate and PhD applications; UG applicants add activities on Common App.
  • Financial proof: Bank statement showing sufficient funds for one year of tuition and living costs, required only after admission for the I-20.
  • Photographs: Passport-style digital photo for the applicant profile.
  • Work experience letters: Required for MPS in Cybersecurity and preferred for other professional master’s programs.

University of Maryland Baltimore County Acceptance Rate

UMBC’s undergraduate acceptance rate is approximately 76 percent, which places it firmly in the access-oriented tier of US public research universities. This means UMBC admits most applicants who meet the stated academic and English floors, rather than filtering by narrow selectivity. Indian applicants with the baseline Class XII 75 percent and IELTS 6.5 are competitive.

UMBC Graduate Selectivity for Indian Applicants

Graduate selectivity varies significantly by department. Computer science, data science, and cybersecurity master’s programs are more competitive, with typical admits carrying a 3.3+ GPA (around 70 percent) and demonstrable prerequisite coursework. Non-technical master’s programs largely admit at the university-wide 3.0 GPA floor.

UMBC PhD Acceptance Rate

PhD admissions are the most selective route, with funded offers going to a fraction of applicants each year. Strong candidates typically show a master’s degree, published research, and direct faculty contact before applying. Institution-wide, UMBC sits at 381 globally and 176 in the USA on the Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 ranking band.

Insider note: The 76 percent headline acceptance rate is undergraduate. Graduate-level admits are program-specific and can be much tighter, especially in CS-adjacent tracks where Indian applicant volume is highest. Aim above the floor rather than at it.

USA F-1 Visa Process for University of Maryland Baltimore County

Indian students admitted to UMBC apply for the F-1 student visa, the standard route for degree-seeking international students in the USA. After admission, UMBC’s international services office issues the Form I-20, which triggers the visa application. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (around INR 33,075) and schedule a visa appointment at a US consulate in India, typically Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad.

The visa interview covers your academic plan, funding sources, and intent to return to India after studies. Carry the I-20, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS receipt, visa fee receipt, passport, admission letter, English test scores, and financial documents showing at least one year of tuition and living costs. Post-arrival, students register with UMBC’s International Education Services within 30 days of program start. STEM graduates qualify for the 36-month OPT (12 months plus 24-month STEM extension). The detailed F-1 visa guide covers document checklists and common interview questions.

2026 update: US visa slots continue to open in waves across the four consulates. Book your appointment as soon as the I-20 arrives; slots for Baltimore’s August intake fill fast between May and July 2027.

Tips and Application Checklist for University of Maryland Baltimore County

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at UMBC across recent Fall intakes. They mix insight tips with timeline-anchored actions.

  • Apply to UG Early Action by 1 November: Unlocks the full scholarship pool, including CWIT, Humanities, and Sondheim awards worth up to USD 22,000 (INR 20.78 Lakhs).
  • Contact PhD advisors by early November: Funded PhD slots at UMBC are department-driven, and faculty champions are usually locked in before the December 15 priority date.
  • Request WES evaluation 8 weeks before deadline: Credential evaluation takes 4 to 6 weeks; start in August 2026 for Fall 2027.
  • Request the MOI waiver early: If your Class XII or bachelor’s was English-medium, ask your school for the MOI letter before you begin the application.
  • Book IELTS or TOEFL by September 2026: Score reports take 10 to 13 days to reach UMBC; align this with the November UG deadline.
  • Prepare the SOP over 3 to 4 drafts: UMBC PG programs read SOPs closely; a first-draft SOP usually reads generic and weakens the application.
  • Line up recommenders by mid-October: Give recommenders at least four weeks and share your SOP with them for context.
  • Track visa slots from admission day: Book the F-1 interview within 48 hours of receiving the I-20, especially for Fall arrivals.
  • Confirm scholarship acceptance by 1 May: UG merit awards and Scholars Program offers require confirmation with the enrolment deposit before the national reply date.

Application status, offer letters, and I-20 dispatch are tracked on myUMBC once you accept the admission. Deferring by one semester is straightforward and does not need re-application, but deferring across an academic year requires a fresh SOP note to the admissions office.

UMBC admissions reward preparation more than prestige-hunting. Indian applicants who apply by the primary Fall 2027 windows, meet the 3.0 GPA and IELTS 6.5 floors, and file for scholarships early consistently secure both the admission and funding. Spring 2027 remains a backup only if the Fall window is missed.

  • No, My program doesn't offer scholarships but there are 4-5 teaching assistant positions in the program but it is highly competitive.
  • You get an in-state tuition fee which is around 7800$ and a stipend of around 1200$ biweekly (15 days).

Scholarship

  • There are no scholarships unfortunately in my course (information systems) in particular.
  • We are on our own to search for assistantships in either a different department or in any undergraduate course.
  • I received a research assistantship in another department which waived all my tuition fees and provided me with a bi weekly stipend on top of that. But the Information systems department mostly provides assistantships to PHD students, but sometimes we can also get if we have string ML or data science / data analytics background

Overview

It has only been close to a month since I have been here but up to now I like it a lot, the people and the faculty are really amazing the only drawback is the lack of social events to meet new people. The main contributing factor for me to choose this university is because of the program and the supporting faculty, I really liked the program structure as well as the classes offered.
