University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) offers 12+ scholarship channels, of which 10 are open to Indian applicants. Awards range from partial merit grants of USD 1,000 (INR 95,450) to fully-funded PhD assistantships worth USD 35,000 (INR 33.41 Lakhs) per year.

Indian students admitted for Fall 2027 have three funding routes at UMBC. These are automatic general merit awards, competitive Scholars Programs, and graduate assistantships that waive tuition entirely.

  • Standard UG tuition (2026-27): USD 23,983 (INR 22.89 Lakhs) per year
  • UG tuition after #YouAreWelcomeHere waiver: USD 11,992 (INR 11.45 Lakhs) per year
  • UG net cost after #YouAreWelcomeHere plus Humanities Scholars stack: fully covered, with a surplus of about USD 10,008 (INR 9.55 Lakhs) toward living costs
  • Next scholarship deadline: November 1, 2026 (first-year automatic merit consideration for Fall 2027)

Currency Note: All INR conversions use the live rate of 1 USD = INR 95.45 as of August 2026. A "tuition waiver" removes tuition charges; a "stipend" is a cash payment for teaching or research work.

University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students

Master’s funding at UMBC runs through department-awarded graduate assistantships rather than named central scholarships. Merit awards for coursework Master’s students are limited, so early outreach to the target department raises assistantship odds.

AwardAmount (USD / INR)EligibilityDeadline
Master’s Graduate Assistantship (full-time TA/RA)USD 868.30 bi-weekly, approximately USD 22,576 per year (INR 21.55 Lakhs)Department nomination, 20-hour weekly duties, tuition remission plus university health insuranceProgram-specific; most departments review by January 15, 2027 for Fall 2027
UMBC Alumni ScholarshipUSD 1,000 first semester (INR 95,450)Applicants holding a UMBC undergraduate degree entering a Master’s or certificate programRolling with admission
Scholarship Retriever AwardsVaries by donor, typically USD 1,000 to 5,000 (INR 95,450 to 4.77 Lakhs)Enrolled UMBC students filing one general application inside the Retriever portalRolling; most donors close by March 1, 2027

Reddit Insight: Master’s TA offers at UMBC are usually made only after applicants reach out directly. Contact the program coordinator with a research-fit note, since central admissions rarely allocates assistantships to coursework Master’s applicants.

Read the UMBC admissions page for department contact lists and application windows.

India-Specific Scholarships at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC)

UMBC does not run any award reserved only for Indian passport holders. The closest fit is the #YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship, which Indian applicants win competitively each year through the essay and video route.

Indian students who miss UMBC-internal cutoffs typically layer Indian government or trust grants on top of general merit. See the External Government table below for those options.

  • Combine general merit with #YouAreWelcomeHere: the two awards run in parallel, so a strong Indian applicant can hold both.
  • Target a Scholars Program in your intended major: Humanities, CWIT, or Sondheim slots draw fewer international entries than the Scholars pool overall.
  • Layer an external trust award: a JN Tata or KC Mahindra loan bridges any remaining tuition and living-cost gap.

Reddit Insight: Indian applicants who submit the #YouAreWelcomeHere video (not the essay) report faster shortlisting. Reviewers judge communication ability directly, which helps candidates whose written English scores are borderline.

University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. What is the maximum funding stack an Indian undergraduate can secure at UMBC?

Ans. An Indian first-year admit can hold the #YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship alongside a Scholars Program award. The waiver removes 50% of tuition, roughly USD 11,992 (INR 11.45 Lakhs). The Scholars award adds up to USD 22,000 (INR 21.00 Lakhs) per year. Combined value can exceed the sticker tuition of USD 23,983 (INR 22.89 Lakhs), leaving a surplus toward Baltimore living costs.

Ques. When should Indian applicants apply for UMBC scholarships targeting Fall 2027?

Ans. Submit the UMBC undergraduate application by November 1, 2026 for automatic general merit review. File Scholars Program applications by January 15, 2027; the Linehan Artist track closes January 31, 2027. Submit the #YouAreWelcomeHere essay or video by early February 2027.

Ques. Do Indian students need to file a separate scholarship application at UMBC?

Ans. General merit awards need no extra form: admission itself triggers the review. Scholars Programs, the #YouAreWelcomeHere award, and donor awards inside Scholarship Retriever each require their own submission with essays or portfolios.

Ques. What GPA or SAT score does UMBC expect for merit scholarship consideration?

Ans. UMBC reviews the full high-school transcript, cumulative averages, and individual subject grades; SAT and ACT scores stay optional for 2026-27. Admitted Indian scholarship recipients typically show a 3.7+ (out of 4.0) equivalent GPA and, when submitted, SAT above 1300.

Ques. Does the UMBC PhD assistantship cover living costs in Baltimore for Indian students?

Ans. Yes, though the margin is tight. A full PhD teaching assistantship pays USD 29,628 (INR 28.28 Lakhs) per year, and Baltimore off-campus rent runs USD 900 to 1,200 monthly. After federal tax withholding of about 25%, take-home pay is roughly USD 22,000 (INR 21.00 Lakhs). This covers shared housing, food, and modest travel; a solo apartment usually needs a summer research grant on top.

Ques. Is the Meyerhoff Scholars Program open to Indian citizens on F-1 visas?

Ans. The Meyerhoff Scholars Program at the undergraduate stage is US-citizen or permanent-resident focused. Indian F-1 applicants should target the Meyerhoff Graduate Fellows Program instead. That doctoral pathway funds international admits in biomedical fields on a case-by-case basis. It pairs with departmental teaching assistantships for full tuition coverage.

  • Through whatsapp or facebook groups, I was able to connect with like minded people who were looking for accommodation.
  • People can also look on websites like apartments.com or zillow to find the best suited apartment for them.
  • The average rent for entire 2bhk apartment will be 1300-1400 usd

  • Yes I received scholarship in the name of international graduate scholarship
  • I received a $1,000 scholarship, which helped with the overall cost of tuition
  • Am not sure how many students but atleast 7 out of 10 students got the scholarship
  • And I heard that they offer many other scholarship programs which we qualify for and also Indian government do give scholarships for international students

  • I found accommodation through my college social media groups like whatsapp, telegram, instagram, facebook
  • My monthly rent is $1500 which was shared by 4 people. So it would be $320 per person excluding WiFi and electricity which costs around $50
  • Challenges like calculating the distance from my house to university was big difficult as I’m new to this state
  • My recommendation would be search for instagram or telegram accounts of the university international students
  • My accommodation was 3 miles from my university or 8kms from my university

Scholarship

  • No, My program doesn't offer scholarships but there are 4-5 teaching assistant positions in the program but it is highly competitive.
  • You get an in-state tuition fee which is around 7800$ and a stipend of around 1200$ biweekly (15 days).
  • Other programs have full tuition remission as TA and GAs like computer science and other research assistant positions are also available.

  • I live off-campus, as most graduate students do because it’s more affordable and a great way to connect with other graduates.
  • My monthly rent is around $400-450. There are plenty of housing options, but the better ones are farther from campus. Nearby housing often has issues with pests and rodents. And also it's difficult to find accommodation nearby.
  • There are some Indian groups on Facebook called EKTA for housing updates at UMBC. And also WhatsApp group but it is available only after admission.

Scholarship

  • There are no scholarships unfortunately in my course (information systems) in particular.
  • We are on our own to search for assistantships in either a different department or in any undergraduate course.
  • I received a research assistantship in another department which waived all my tuition fees and provided me with a bi weekly stipend on top of that. But the Information systems department mostly provides assistantships to PHD students, but sometimes we can also get if we have string ML or data science / data analytics background

  • I opted for off campus housing as we have control over the expenses for wifi and electricity. We can share a room with another roommate that reduces rent per head.
  • Monthly rent - 300$ included dishwasher, laundry, stove, oven (not microwave oven)
  • Challenges - lot of students like to stay close to the university so finding an accommodation near the university is extremely competitive.
My accommodation was 10 min walk away from the university called Westland gardens. That's where most of the UMBC indians students stay.

I got the 1000$ scholarship through the EDUCO team. They are directly tied up with my university officials so they awarded me this scholarship. My consultancy also helped me to get this scholarship. Thanks to the EDUCO team.

University of Maryland, Baltimore County is known for its research in the field of computer science and the admission process is easy. I submitted an online application in computer science and took my English proficiency test and GRE to get admitted to UMBC.

I received 25% scholarship on the complete tuition fees from Syracuse University. Application fee for UMBC and Syracuse University was 75. I had applied a fee waiver code for UMBC because of which I did not pay any amount for application.

My experience here was good, I would recommend students to join UMBC for Under Graduation or Graduation.

It has only been close to a month since I have been here but up to now I like it a lot, the people and the faculty are really amazing the only drawback is the lack of social events to meet new people. The main contributing factor for me to choose this university is because of the program and the supporting faculty, I really liked the program structure as well as the classes offered.
