UMBC charges a flat non-resident graduate rate that is publicly listed by credit, and no institutional need-based aid is offered to international students. Merit awards and departmental assistantships close the gap for high-scoring Indian applicants, and Baltimore’s cost of living sits well below the coastal metros, keeping the total annual outlay manageable. University of Maryland, Baltimore County Admission 2027
UMBC admits international graduate students primarily for the Fall intake, with a smaller Spring window for select programmes; deadlines and required documents are set by each academic department, not centrally.
| Milestone | Date | Notes for Indian Applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Spring 2027 international final | August 1, 2026 | Applies to selected programmes only; most departments admit Fall only |
| Fall 2027 international priority | Expected March 1, 2027 (based on prior cycle) | CBEE and several engineering programmes use this hard cut-off |
| Fall 2027 regular deadline | Expected July 15, 2027 (based on prior cycle) | Applies to mechanical engineering and some open-admission programmes |
| Credential verification (WES) | Start 6 to 8 weeks before deadline | UMBC accepts WES ICAP course-by-course evaluations for Indian transcripts |
| Programme start | August 2027 (Fall) / January 2027 (Spring) | I-20 typically issued 4 to 6 weeks after admission decision |
[Source: UMBC Graduate Admissions]
Planning note: Application decisions take 6 to 8 weeks after the programme deadline, so an applicant clearing the March 1 international priority date typically receives an offer by mid-May, leaving a 10-week visa window before Fall orientation.

University of Maryland, Baltimore County Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
The Graduate School sets baseline eligibility, but each department adds programme-specific criteria that Indian applicants should verify individually.
- Bachelor’s degree: Four-year Indian bachelor’s with 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 (recommended); three-year bachelor’s accepted with case-by-case review
- English test: TOEFL iBT 80 (or 4 on the new 1-6 band scale in effect from January 21, 2026), IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 115, or PTE Academic 53
- Credential verification: Official transcripts submitted directly by the Indian institution; WES ICAP evaluation required for degree equivalence
- GRE: Waived or optional for most MS programmes; still expected for select engineering and PhD tracks
Key insight: TOEFL Essentials at 8.5 and the new TOEFL iBT 1-6 band scale (minimum 4) are both accepted, giving Indian applicants a cheaper and shorter alternative to the legacy iBT, though several engineering departments still ask for iBT scores component-wise.
University of Maryland, Baltimore County Acceptance Rate 2027
UMBC does not publish a separate international acceptance rate, but its aggregate admission rate sits near 74% (estimated) based on institutional common-data-set trends; this places UMBC in the moderately selective band for Indian applicants who meet baseline thresholds.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 74% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2025 | 72% (estimated) | Stable |
Selectivity is materially higher inside flagship programmes like the Meyerhoff Scholars and the MS Data Science track, where offer rates drop into the 20% to 30% band. The headline rate should be read as an entry-level benchmark, not an offer probability for competitive STEM masters.
Reality check: A CGPA of 7.5/10 with two solid recommendations and an IELTS 7.0 puts an Indian applicant well inside the admit zone for most UMBC MS programmes; the differentiator at scholarship stage is a research statement or a published project.

Insider note: Two-bedroom apartments in Catonsville and Arbutus adjacent to campus rent for USD 1,400 to 1,800 per month, dropping per-person rent to about USD 750 when split, which is the standard Indian-student housing pattern at UMBC.
University of Maryland, Baltimore County Campus, Facilities and Student Life
UMBC’s single 500-acre suburban campus sits in Catonsville, Maryland, 15 minutes from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and inside the Baltimore-Washington research corridor.
- Location and transit: Free UMBC Transit shuttle links campus to the BWI light-rail station and Arbutus MARC stop, giving direct rail access to downtown Baltimore and Washington DC
- Housing: On-campus rooms priced at USD 8,500 to 11,000 per year (INR 8.1 to 10.5 lakh) with guaranteed placement for first-year international students who apply by the June deadline
- Notable facility: The bwtech@UMBC research park hosts more than 100 cybersecurity and biotech startups, feeding paid internships to graduate students
- Indian community: The UMBC Indian Students Association runs Diwali, Holi and Republic Day events; roughly 1,000 international students from 90 countries study on campus
What Indian students say: Access to bwtech@UMBC and Baltimore-DC federal contractors makes coursework feel employer-linked; campus is quieter than Baltimore proper, so most weekend social life happens in Federal Hill or Fells Point.

Planning note: The #YouAreWelcomeHere award has only two seats per year across all incoming international undergraduates, so the realistic funding path for most Indian PG applicants is a departmental teaching or research assistantship arranged after admission.

University of Maryland, Baltimore County Rankings 2027
UMBC’s strongest positioning is in US News, where it ranks #127 among National Universities 2026 and #63 among Top Public Schools, moving up 17 and 11 positions year-on-year.
| Ranking Body | Latest Edition | Previous Edition | Two Editions Back |
|---|---|---|---|
| QS World | 2027: #801-850 | 2026: #801-850 | 2025: #851-900 |
| THE World | 2026: #601-800 | 2025: #601-800 | 2024: #601-800 |
| US News National Universities | 2026: #127 | 2025: #144 | 2024: #159 |
| Collegedunia Study Abroad | #381 of 824 | NA | NA |
Subject-level positioning is stronger than the aggregate: UMBC is ranked #68 among US doctoral universities in QS subject strength for biological sciences, computer science and physics, and the School of Public Policy is among the top 100 public policy graduate programmes in the US News graduate rankings. Collegedunia ranks UMBC #176 of 357 in the USA cohort.
Key insight: A US News National University rank inside #150 is the practical threshold Indian education loan lenders and MNC recruiters look for when validating a US masters, and UMBC clears that bar with a rising 3-year trajectory.

University of Maryland, Baltimore County Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
UMBC’s Career Center reports strong outcomes for graduate degree recipients, driven by proximity to Baltimore-Washington federal contractors, cybersecurity firms and health-tech employers.
- Placement rate: 92% for graduate degree recipients (COEIT databook); 95% of employed graduates are in career-relevant roles
- Median graduate starting salary: USD 87,633 per year (INR 83.6 lakh); COEIT graduates median USD 94,932 (INR 90.6 lakh)
- Recruiter sectors: federal contractors, cybersecurity, healthcare IT, biotech, and financial services in the Baltimore-DC corridor
- STEM OPT eligibility: all engineering, computer science, information systems and data science MS tracks qualify for the 36-month STEM OPT extension
- Career support: Career Center runs employer expos each Fall and Spring; graduate assistantships often convert to co-op roles at bwtech@UMBC tenants
Insider note: Indian graduates from UMBC’s cybersecurity and information systems programmes cluster into federal-adjacent contractors like Northrop Grumman, T. Rowe Price and Leidos, where security-clearance sponsorship is common for OPT-to-H1B conversion.
University of Maryland, Baltimore County vs Peer Universities
Compared against Maryland public peers and mid-tier US research universities Indian applicants shortlist, UMBC offers a distinctly lower fee than R1 flagships at similar acceptance rates.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD / INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UMBC | #801-850 | #381 | 27,000 / 25.8 lakh | Lowest tuition among Maryland public research universities |
| University of Maryland, College Park | #94 | NA | 44,000 / 42.0 lakh | Flagship rank and DC-corridor recruiting depth |
| George Mason University | #521 | NA | 36,000 / 34.4 lakh | Larger cybersecurity cohort and Northern Virginia location |
| Rochester Institute of Technology | #601-610 | NA | 52,000 / 49.6 lakh | Co-op programme with mandatory paid work terms |
| Stevens Institute of Technology | #547 | NA | 44,000 / 42.0 lakh | NYC-metro access and finance recruiting |
UMBC’s combination of a rising US News trajectory, sub-USD 30,000 tuition, and STEM OPT eligibility across most masters makes it a value pick for Indian applicants who miss offers at UMD College Park. The bwtech research park and federal-corridor employer density are the practical edge over lower-ranked peers.
UMBC fits an Indian MS applicant with a bachelor’s around 65% or CGPA 7.0, a competitive TOEFL or IELTS, and a total budget under INR 50 lakh looking for a STEM-designated masters with strong placement into the Baltimore-DC tech corridor. A median starting salary of INR 83.6 lakh against a two-year outlay near INR 90 to 100 lakh gives payback inside 15 months of full-time OPT employment, and the STEM OPT extension anchors a three-year US work runway.
The university is a weaker fit for applicants targeting Ivy-tier brand recognition or a finance or consulting career pivot; a candidate on that track should consider University of Maryland, College Park for a Maryland footprint with flagship-tier ranking and deeper Wall Street feeder pipelines.
University of Maryland, Baltimore County FAQs
Ques. Does UMBC accept a 3-year Indian bachelor’s degree for MS admission?
Ans. UMBC evaluates three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees case by case through WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation. Applicants from IITs, NITs, IIITs and NAAC-accredited universities are frequently admitted on three-year degrees when their transcript reflects at least 120 US-equivalent credits. Weaker profiles are usually asked to complete a one-year postgraduate diploma or a master’s in India before applying.
Ques. Is GRE waived for MS Computer Science at UMBC?
Ans. The GRE is optional for most UMBC masters admissions including MS Computer Science, MS Information Systems and MPS Cybersecurity, following a system-wide waiver introduced during and retained after the pandemic cycle. A strong GRE quantitative score above 165 still helps a borderline profile qualify for a teaching or research assistantship, so submitting is recommended for scholarship-seeking Indian applicants.
Ques. What is the application fee for UMBC graduate programmes?
Ans. UMBC charges a non-refundable graduate application fee of USD 50, roughly INR 4,770 at current rates. Fee waivers are granted case by case for applicants who attended UMBC recruitment events, veterans, and specific fellowship-nominated candidates. Indian applicants without a waiver should factor the fee into shortlisting cost, as no refund is issued once the application is submitted.
Ques. Can F-1 international students work while studying at UMBC?
Ans. F-1 visa holders at UMBC may work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the academic term and full-time during official breaks. Off-campus employment requires either Curricular Practical Training linked to a course requirement or Optional Practical Training after completing two full-time semesters. STEM-designated masters graduates qualify for a 36-month OPT extension.
Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans recognised at UMBC?
Ans. UMBC appears on the recognised US universities list of SBI, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank and Bank of Baroda for education loans up to INR 1.5 crore. Prodigy Finance and MPOWER also offer no-cosigner loans to UMBC admits based on programme employability. Applicants should share the I-20 and admission letter to unlock USD-denominated disbursement.
Ques. How long is UMBC’s OPT and STEM OPT window for Indian graduates?
Ans. UMBC graduates on F-1 status receive an initial 12-month Optional Practical Training authorisation after programme completion. Graduates of STEM-designated majors, which include all UMBC engineering, computer science, information systems and data science masters, qualify for an additional 24-month STEM OPT extension. Total US work authorisation totals 36 months for Indian STEM MS graduates.
Ques. What documents does UMBC require for the I-20 visa form?
Ans. After admission UMBC issues the I-20 form on receipt of a passport copy, an official financial affidavit showing USD 55,000 in liquid funds for the first year, and a sponsor letter if the applicant is not self-funded. Bank statements not older than six months and a signed Certification of Finances are mandatory. Processing typically takes four to six weeks after all documents are submitted.
Ques. Does UMBC offer conditional admission for low English scores?
Ans. Yes, the UMBC Graduate School may extend conditional admission to applicants whose academic profile is strong but who fall short of the TOEFL 80 or IELTS 6.5 threshold. Conditional admits enroll in the English Language Institute for one or two semesters and transition to full graduate standing on clearing the exit assessment. This pathway is popular with Indian applicants from vernacular-medium bachelor’s programmes.

- Lot of Indian crowd in masters program Very good Indian association which is helpful during house search. Well segregated groups to buy / sell used items for lesser price from other students, groups to search houses, groups to book rides etc.
Dislikes

- Small campus and hence competitive on-campus jobs
- Not many technical clubs (that I know of) for masters students to collaborate

- UMBC is known for its research especially in the field of computer science.
- It is near to Washington DC so students have a lot of opportunities.
- UMBC has smaller faculty to student ratio.
Dislikes
- It is a very small campus when compared to other US universities.
- It has a lot of traffic sometimes which will be hassle for students.
- Maryland state's weather is unpredictable.
Overview
University of Maryland, Baltimore County is known for its research in the field of computer science and the admission process is easy. I submitted an online application in computer science and took my English proficiency test and GRE to get admitted to UMBC.
Campus Life
Well, coming to clubs and co-curricular activities there are a lot! A lot!!! It's only been 1 month since my college started every single day there will be an event in my college. The things like library and sports facilities are very good.
Likes
- Factors that influenced me to choose UMBC over all other university were surrounding cities, living cost (which is quite cheaper compared to other cities with such highly ranked university), University campus, facilities provided in campus and to international students, availablity of On Campus jobs. Apart from other aspects, university offers multiple options for a single course, you will have at least 5-6 options for a single course, this gives a freedom to choose and explore multiple pathways.
Dislikes
- Some students may not be fond of UMBC's location in suburban Baltimore, feeling that it lacks the urban vibrancy found in other college towns. UMBC is located in a Baltimore county area, which I feel have few areas that is not as safe for students as it should be.
Overview
My experience here was good, I would recommend students to join UMBC for Under Graduation or Graduation.
Campus Life
WIFI is available all the time on campus, it's free! We have a huge 6 storey building all dedicated to Library, you may see it's picture online. For sports, we have indoor and outdoor court for all sports. When it comes to clubs, UMBC has multiple clubs for all communities, for Indians we have HSC, Hindu Student Community, they organize events quite frequently to keep us connected with our roots.
Likes
- UMBC has all the facilities and perks except the location. The costs are comparatively low and curriculum equally good.
Overview
It has been a great and smooth experience. Everyone around is helpful. It is just the area that is not too great.
Campus Life
There is always something or the other going on campus. There is Graduate Student Association for Grad students which is very helpful and organize lot of events.
Likes
- The MS program in cybersecurity is a dedicated program that is handled by people who have either actually worked or are still working in the field. The professors are interactive and the method for class is very good.
Dislikes
- The campus social scene is quite lacking, hence it is quite difficult for me to make new friends or meet new people, the campus is located in the sub-urban area so there isn't exactly much to do as in terms of night life.
Overview
It has only been close to a month since I have been here but up to now I like it a lot, the people and the faculty are really amazing the only drawback is the lack of social events to meet new people. The main contributing factor for me to choose this university is because of the program and the supporting faculty, I really liked the program structure as well as the classes offered.
Campus Life
The library, campus WiFi and sports facilities are up to the mark at UMBC as they have been recently renovated, sports facilities include an indoor gym, swimming pool, basketball court, badminton court, mini football court, volleyball court and a running track. The outdoor facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, lacrose field.
