Origin of Life (Big Bang to First Cell)

The earth formed around 4.5 billion years ago. Its early atmosphere had no free oxygen and was rich in methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3), and water vapour. Oparin and Haldane proposed that life arose from non-living molecules in this "hot dilute soup". Miller and Urey (1953) tested this in a sealed sparking apparatus and recovered amino acids and sugars.

Theories of Evolution (Special Creation, Lamarckism, Darwinism)

Special creation says species never change; fossils disproved it. Darwinism (1859) says variation exists naturally, the environment selects favourable variants, and survivors pass them on. Darwin's finches on the Galapagos started as one seed-eating ancestor and radiated into 13 species with different beaks. Australian marsupials radiated into forms parallel to placental mammals. Hardy-Weinberg Principle

In a non-evolving population, allele frequencies stay constant each generation. With p + q = 1, the genotype frequencies follow:
