Levels of Ecological Organisation
Ecology has four levels: organism → population → community → biome. This chapter covers the first two. A population is one species sharing a habitat at one time; a community is many interacting populations.
Major Abiotic Factors
Four drivers shape distribution: temperature, water, light and soil. Temperature sets metabolic rate; water splits hydric, mesic and xeric habitats; light drives photoperiod. NEET 2024 tested the photoperiod term with marigold.
Responses to Abiotic Factors
Organisms use five strategies: regulate, conform, migrate, suspend or tolerate. Exponential: $$\dfrac{dN}{dt} = rN \Rightarrow N_t = N_0 e^{rt}$$ a J-shaped curve with unlimited resources. Logistic (Verhulst-Pearl): $$\dfrac{dN}{dt} = rN\left(\dfrac{K-N}{K}\right)$$ an S-shaped sigmoid with an asymptote at carrying capacity K, where r is the intrinsic rate of natural increase.
Life History Variation
r-strategists (invertebrates, weeds) breed often with many small offspring. K-strategists (large mammals, oaks) breed few times with high parental care. Pacific salmon breeds once and dies (semelparity); humans breed many times (iteroparity).
Population Interactions
Six interactions by sign-pair: mutualism (+/+), competition (-/-), predation (+/-), parasitism (+/-), commensalism (+/0), amensalism (-/0). Removing the Pisaster sea-star wiped out 10 of 15 invertebrate species (Paine's keystone species experiment).
