Program Description

  • The University of Calgary offers a Master of Law program for a duration of 2 years.
  • It is an on-campus, course-based program offered on both a full-time or part-time basis.
  • This program is designed for students seeking to deepen their knowledge of a particular area of law, whether for professional or academic reasons.
  • The course-based stream is designed to accommodate practicing lawyers in private, corporate, and government practice.
  • The specialization courses of Law program has been recognized as one of the top ten energy law programs in the world and these courses are:
    • Natural Resources
    • Energy Law
    • Environmental Law
  • The LLM program is consists of 2 core courses which consist of Graduate Seminar in Legal Research and Methodology, a Major Research Paper course, and 5 elective courses.
  • Students are also allowed to do some additional courses which include topics such as natural resources, energy or environmental law, or a related area or discipline.
  • University provides the flexibility to complete the LLM program in a maximum of 5 years.
  • The program was included in the LLM Guide's top 10 energy law programs worldwide in 2019 and LLM students are eligible to become members of the University of Calgary’s Graduate College.
  • Students take a Research Paper course on a topic of their choice and complete it in the final year of the program.
  • This course-based LLM will also appeal to international students trained in civil law seeking an introduction to Canada's common law system.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students must complete an academic degree in the law program.
  • GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 point system, over the past 2 years of full-time study (10 courses or 60 units) of a UG degree.
  • Students must have to complete the Academic Communication Certificate with a minimum grade of A- in the Academic Writing and Composition course.
  • Students to the LLM program must have to submit a brief description of their proposed thesis or major research paper and indicate their proposed supervisor.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Completed a 4-year bachelor’s degree with first-class from a recognized institution.
  • Or, completed a 3-year bachelor's degree must hold a master's degree.
  • Or, have a CGPA of 8/10 (or 7.5/10 for IIT's only).

Submission of LSAT scores is compulsory for this program, and it is recommended to submit the scores for a better chance of admission.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

  • CV/Resume: Outline of academic achievements and/or awards, publications, relevant work and/or volunteer experience.
  • Transcript: A PDF copy of all post-secondary transcripts within the application or in Carleton Central.
  • Two Letter of Reference: One from students capable of assessing the applicant’s academic and research ability, normally an academic, and one from students who can attest to the applicant’s nursing practice and expertise
  • Statement of Intent: Explain the reasons or intentions for pursuing studies in this program, including a description of prior experience.
  • Research proposal: Document proposing a research project, generally in the sciences or academia, and generally constitutes a request for sponsorship of that research.
  • Statement of Purpose: An essay stating the purpose of applying to a particular course at a particular university.
  • Statement of research interests: Student has to fill their interesting research work area in the application form.
  • Document: A brief statement of their proposed thesis or major paper.

VISA & Work Study

VISA

  • The students need a study visa to study at designated learning institutions (DLI) in Canada.
  • A Study Visa is issued to students by Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and authorizes an individual to study at a designated learning institution in Canada for the duration of the program of study.
  • The Visa is usually valid for the length of the study program, plus an extra 90 days.
  • Students may also need a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA).
  • At the time of VISA application, students need to provide various documents:
    • Letter of Acceptance from the University of Calgary 
    • Proof of Financial Support
    • Passport
    • Photograph

Work Study

Students with a valid Study Visa, enrolled full time are eligible to work on-campus and off-campus.

On-Campus: Students registered as full-time and have a valid Study Visa, may work on-campus 

  • There is no legal restriction on the number of hours to work on-campus, so long as the student remains a full-time student can work on-campus. 
  • Students may also work more than one job. 

Off-Campus: Students are enrolled full-time, have a valid study permit, and are in a program that leads to a UCalgary degree that takes longer than 6 months to complete, they may be eligible to work off-campus.

  • The graduate students can work 20 hours per week off-campus during regular academic sessions of Fall and Winter terms.
  • The undergraduate students can work 20 hours per week off-campus full-time during scheduled breaks. 

Work Permit: A work permit that allows international students to work full-time while still being enrolled full-time. Students may only use this work permit to work full-time during their co-op/practicum terms in a work.
