FAQs
Ques. What are the English language requirements for international applicants?
Ans. IELTS Academic (overall band 6.5 with minimum 6.0 per component), TOEFL iBT (minimum 83), Duolingo (minimum 110), or PTE Academic (minimum 59) are accepted. Most Indian applicants choose IELTS for cost and familiarity; six to twelve weeks of preparation is typical depending on baseline English confidence.
Ques. Is Chemical Engineering more selective than other engineering disciplines at University of Calgary?
Ans. Chemical Engineering acceptance rates are similar to Mechanical and Civil Engineering, approximately fifteen to twenty percent for competitive international applicants. Final admission depends on your final-year GPA in chemistry, mathematics, and physics rather than the specific engineering stream you apply to.
Ques. Can I start my degree in January (Winter intake) instead of September?
Ans. Yes, Winter intake is available with application opening July 2026 and supplementary deadline November 2026. Both intakes follow the same curriculum; Winter cohorts are smaller, which some students prefer for lower student-to-instructor ratios.
Ques. What is the co-operative education requirement, and can I skip it?
Ans. Co-operative education is mandatory and integrated into the curriculum. You complete eight-month work terms in years two and three (two terms total). Co-op earnings of INR 17.53 Lakhs to INR 28.05 Lakhs offset living costs substantially; skipping co-op is not permitted.
Ques. What is my permanent residency pathway after graduation?
Ans. Upon graduation, you receive a four-year Post-Graduation Work Permit allowing you to work anywhere in Canada without a job offer. After one to two years of experience at a salary above CAD 62,000, you qualify for Express Entry federal skilled-worker immigration, with processing timelines of six months. Canadian permanent residency is acquired, leading to citizenship eligibility after three years.
