Simon Fraser University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Requirements sit at the university minimum below; individual programmes may raise the threshold. Every Indian applicant must clear the academic, English, and credential requirements before the department reviews the file.

Postgraduate Requirements

  • Academic: Bachelor’s with 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended) from a UGC-recognised university; research programmes and Beedie MBA target 70% or CGPA 7.0/10 (recommended)
  • English: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 4.5 (1-6 band scale) with no part below 4.0; TOEFL iBT 88 legacy scale with no part below 20 accepted for tests taken before 21 January 2026
  • Credential evaluation: WES ICAP evaluation for Indian bachelor degrees, especially 3-year degrees
  • Standardised tests: GMAT (target 550 plus) for Beedie MBA; GRE only for select PhD programmes in Economics and Business

Undergraduate Requirements

  • Academic: Class 12 with 70% to 85% (recommended) from CBSE, ICSE, or state boards; subject prerequisites apply to Business, Engineering, and Computing Science
  • English: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 4.5 (1-6 band scale) with no part below 4.0; TOEFL iBT 88 legacy scale with no part below 20 accepted for tests taken before 21 January 2026
  • English waiver: English-medium instruction letter with documented CBSE or ICSE English grades may qualify; subject to committee review

Key insight: Simon Fraser University accepts BOTH the new TOEFL iBT 1-6 band scale and the legacy 0-120 score during the 2026 to 2028 transition. Publish whichever score is stronger on your report card.

Simon Fraser University Acceptance Rate 2027

Simon Fraser University does not publish a single institution-wide acceptance rate; the university reports admission by department and faculty. Third-party estimates based on published enrolment data and application volume place the overall undergraduate acceptance rate at 65% (estimated). Competitive programmes such as Beedie BBA, Computing Science, and Engineering Science admit at lower rates, closer to 40% to 50% (estimated).

Indian applicants who meet the 80% Class 12 threshold and clear IELTS 6.5 typically receive offers for open-enrolment programmes. Direct entry to Business, Engineering, and Computing Science requires 85% plus with subject-specific grades and is measurably more selective.

Reality check: Simon Fraser University uses first-year GPA as the primary transfer gate to competitive Beedie and Computing Science majors. Indian students often enter through the Faculty of Arts or Science first and transfer after 2 semesters of strong performance.

Simon Fraser University Campus, Facilities and Student Life

Simon Fraser University operates three campuses across Metro Vancouver: the flagship Burnaby Mountain campus (main research and residence hub), Surrey (business and computing focus), and Vancouver at Harbour Centre (professional programmes and downtown location). All three sit within Metro Vancouver’s TransLink transit network, and the U-Pass BC unlimited transit pass is bundled into student fees.

Simon Fraser University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

Simon Fraser University’s employment outcomes reflect the Metro Vancouver technology, banking, and public sector labour market. The university runs Canada’s second-largest cooperative education programme after the University of Waterloo, and co-op placements feed directly into full-time offers.

  • Employment outcomes: SFU alumni surveys have historically reported 90%-plus employment within 2 years for undergraduate cohorts (labeled as market range; latest official rate not disclosed)
  • Median starting salary: CAD 55,000 to 65,000 (INR 38.2 to 45.2 lakh) for bachelor’s graduates (market median)
  • Median post-MBA salary: CAD 80,000 to 95,000 (INR 55.6 to 66.1 lakh) for Beedie MBA graduates (market median); explore comparable outcomes at other MBA universities in Canada
  • Representative recruiters: Technology (Microsoft, SAP, Amazon), Banking (RBC, TD, Scotiabank), Consulting (Deloitte, KPMG, EY), and Government of British Columbia
  • Career support: Career and Volunteer Services runs annual career fairs, resume workshops, and mock interviews; Beedie School of Business runs a dedicated MBA career centre
  • Post-Graduation Work Permit: Indian graduates qualify for the Canada Post-Graduation Work Permit for up to 3 years subject to programme length

Insider note: Co-op programmes at Simon Fraser University require enrolment by the second year for undergraduates. Indian students who complete two co-op terms convert to full-time offers at a materially higher rate than non-co-op peers.

Simon Fraser University vs Peer Universities

The peer set below covers the other Canadian Comprehensive-category leaders plus UBC as the closest Metro Vancouver research-intensive alternative. Fee bands are indicative published international tuition schedules.

UniversityQS Band 2027Avg Annual PG Fee (CAD / INR lakh)Differentiator
Simon Fraser University#312CAD 18,000 to 40,000 / INR 12.5 to 27.8 lakh#1 Comprehensive university in Canada (Maclean’s 2026); Metro Vancouver base
University of British ColumbiaTop 50CAD 30,000 to 60,000 / INR 20.9 to 41.7 lakhResearch-intensive; medical school and largest BC research budget
University of VictoriaTop 350CAD 18,000 to 30,000 / INR 12.5 to 20.9 lakhOcean and climate research; smaller coastal campus
University of WaterlooTop 150CAD 25,000 to 55,000 / INR 17.4 to 38.2 lakhCanada’s largest cooperative education programme
McMaster UniversityTop 200CAD 25,000 to 50,000 / INR 17.4 to 34.8 lakhHealth sciences and engineering research strength

Simon Fraser University stands out on two data-backed dimensions: it is the only Comprehensive-category winner with a three-campus Metro Vancouver footprint, and its per-unit tuition structure gives Indian graduate students a lower entry cost than UBC and Waterloo for equivalent course-based master’s programmes.

Simon Fraser University fits the Indian applicant who wants a Metro Vancouver base at Comprehensive-university tuition, with a Fall 2027 investment near CAD 55,000 (INR 38.2 lakh) tuition-plus-living weighed against median starting salaries of CAD 60,000 (INR 41.7 lakh). The Post-Graduation Work Permit of up to 3 years is the strongest India-specific advantage, extending Canadian work eligibility well beyond graduation.

SFU is not the fit for applicants seeking a large research-intensive campus with a medical school or an aggressive global top-100 rank. The University of British Columbia, 20 minutes across town, is the realistic alternative on both counts.

    • They have 3 campuses, and each of them has a library and medical facility. Only the Burnaby campus has a gym and recreational area. Because it was far from my campus, I never used it but still got charged a fee for it. There are many extracurricular activities and events like Dog therapy, and recruitment events but all at Burnaby and mostly focused on undergraduate students.

My experience at SFU was really good. I met some life long friends and learnt a lot about machine learning and deep learning. SFU also helped me connecting with various people with varied experience and learn a lot.

As a commuter school, it lacks extracurricular activities. However, you can attend clubs and meet different people.

The university is overall impressive and good. The program has 3 fields to dive into - Big Data, Visual Computing and CyBig data is my field and I believe this program is solid for it.

Campus life is good, not the best since it's on a mountain so accessibility is less. But the infrastructure, events held and extracurricular activities are all par with competing universities.

    Overview

It's been different from how we learn in India, there are research papers to read and that's where you absorb all your learning from. You may take a week or two to get used to it, but it's quite helpful. Just make sure you read smart or it'll take up a lot of your time. It's one of the best universities! Staff is ever helpful and looking forward to give you the support and nudge required at any point of time.

Campus life is quite happening. But, most of the events take place in Burnaby, which is far from here and a big drawback. The Surrey campus is within a mall so it's quite lively! There are options for students to enroll in extracurricular activities, you even get extracurricular credits for that. There are games in the mezzanine area almost every day. There's free wi-fi and a library in all the campuses.

    Overview

I wanted to stay in the lower mainland. Enrollment included a fee, questions to be answered in paragraph form about why I want to be a student at SFU, as well as grades entered from grade 10-12. I prepared myself online. I did not enjoy my experience overall, the campus was very cold, dark, not inviting. The students were extremely competitive as it was a pre med school major so making friends was very difficult. The faculty treated everyone like a number aside from their favorites, the courses were very difficult and detail orientated.

    Campus Life

The library was great, it had lots of space to study as well as many books available. Other than that I didn't partake in any campus life because of my commute I didn't spend much time on campus. It is difficult for me to comment on these matters.

    Overview

Simon Fraser is one of the CEPH accrediation certified course. As a dentist I have prepared for the statistics course seperately and I scored A + grade in that. And for the english proficiency test, I wrote IELTS exam and secured 7.5/9. Afterthat, I converted my score with the wes canada for the evaluation and I secured 3.86 gpa. For getting the admission, we need strong Sop, LOR, Wes score, Statistics course and relevant experience in the population health.

SFU has lot of lot of recreational activities club, library, student union buildings, counselling units, labs etc. In my MPh program i am the only one Indian so I am currently studying with students from other country with diverse professionals. The campus is located on the mountain, you will get a beautiful view of the entire city from the campus. Its a 24*7 campus. You can see people in the campus at all the time.

    Overview

I wanted to go to a university in Canada as I believe that there are more opportunities for students, especially international students, to succeed in Canada. I chose SFU because they have a really great business program focused on the concentrations I wanted to pursue. It is a very well-known university in Canada and is still affordable! While it might not be known internationally, in the networking events or interviews that I have been to here, many employers have great things to say about the university. Additionally, I received a scholarship which was probably the deal breaker that made me choose SFU over any other university!
