York University Scholarships for UG Students

Three major undergraduate awards require a separate application: the Global Leader of Tomorrow Award, International Entrance Scholarship of Distinction, and President’s International Scholarship of Excellence. In addition, four automatic entrance scholarships are awarded with the admission offer, without requiring a separate application.

President’s International Scholarship of Excellence $45,000/year ($180,000) INR 1.26 Crore total A+ average, leadership, principal nomination January 27, 2027

Indian students with a Class 12 CBSE score of 90%+ typically land the Scholarship of Distinction tier automatically. For the top three application-based awards, a signed nomination from your school principal is non-negotiable. Renewal requires a 7.5 GPA (B+) plus 24 completed credits each academic year.

  • Renewal GPA: 7.5 (B+) on York’s 9-point grade system
  • Credit load rule: complete 24 credits per academic year to keep multi-year awards
  • No reapplication: automatic awards are reassessed each term by York’s registrar

Reddit Insight: Indian recipients report that the President’s Award helps cover tuition and part of Toronto’s housing costs. Design student Gaurika Agarwal has also credited the award with reducing the financial pressure on her family.

York University Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students

Master’s funding at York University is more limited than undergraduate funding, with many awards based on departmental nominations. The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) and York Graduate Fellowship are key funding options for Indian postgraduate applicants.

Scholarship Value (CAD) Value (INR) Eligibility Deadline
Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) $5,000/term ($15,000/year) INR 10.50 Lakhs/year A- average, open to international students December 1, 2026 (Master’s internal)
York Graduate Fellowship (YGF) Varies by program and year Program-dependent, up to INR 10 Lakhs Automatic for full-time grad admits With admission application
QEII Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology $5,000/term ($15,000/year) INR 10.50 Lakhs/year Science or engineering grad students December 1, 2026 (Master’s internal)
Faculty-level Internal Awards $1,000 to $10,000 varies INR 70,000 to INR 7 Lakhs Nominated through graduate program Rolling via Graduate Awards Portal
Research Assistantships (RA) $3,000 to $8,000 per term INR 2.10 Lakhs to INR 5.60 Lakhs Supervisor nomination, research work Varies by supervisor

Most Indian Master’s students stack an OGS or QEII award on top of a York Graduate Fellowship. Research-track applicants should pitch supervisors early for RA funding during admission conversations. The OGS internal deadline arrives one full semester before fund disbursement.

Reddit Insight: Discussions among York University applicants suggest that the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) requires a separate application through the Faculty of Graduate Studies portal. Admission paperwork alone may not be sufficient, so applicants should check the latest faculty-specific instructions and scholarship deadlines.

Shastri Research Student Fellowship (SICI) $6,000 for 12 to 24 weeks INR 4.20 Lakhs Full-time Indian Master’s student visiting Canada Rolling; tentative November 30, 2026

FAQs

Ques. What is the maximum scholarship funding an Indian student can stack at York University?

Ans. An Indian UG applicant can combine the President’s International Scholarship of Excellence (CAD 180,000) with faculty-level merit awards. Top candidates have landed four-year packages worth INR 1.30 Crore plus a living stipend. The President’s award alone covers full international tuition in most York programs.

Ques. When should Indian students apply for York University scholarships?

Ans. Submit your York University admission application by December 2026 for Fall 2027 intake. The President’s scholarship deadline is January 27, 2027. Automatic entrance scholarships appear within three weeks of your admission offer.

Ques. Do I need a separate application for the automatic entrance scholarships?

Ans. No separate form is needed for the four automatic entrance scholarships at York University. York evaluates your admission average and applies the appropriate award directly in your offer letter. The three top application-based awards do need a separate online nomination form plus principal signature.

Ques. What CBSE or ICSE percentage do I need for the top York scholarship tier?

Ans. A CBSE or ICSE Class 12 aggregate of 90%+ typically maps to York’s A+ grade. This clears the eligibility bar for the three application-based awards. For the automatic Distinction tier, you need 85% or higher on your Class 12 best-of-four.

Ques. How does the Global Leader of Tomorrow Award work for Indian applicants?

Ans. York University gives two Global Leader of Tomorrow awards per year, each worth CAD 20,000 annually for four years. Indian applicants submit the online nomination form by early February with academic transcripts, essay and principal signature. Masoom Gaba from India won this award in a recent cycle.

Ques. Does a York University scholarship cover Toronto living costs?

Ans. The top three application-based scholarships cover tuition entirely and leave money for rent. Toronto on-campus residence costs CAD 11,000 per year (INR 7.70 Lakhs). Students with the CAD 180,000 package can self-fund living after tuition is handled.

  • Yes, I did some research beforehand, looking through kijiji, facebook marketplace, rentals.ca, joined whatsapp groups.
  • My monthly rent was 800 as it was a private room including utilities in york village.

  • I did hear about scholarships but we are told nothing. And nothing is available for an international student.
  • I believe as per the knowledge I have only master students receive them. But again they don’t inform us about such things. Even I looked it up and emailed the university but they straight away said No, that we don't offer scholarships to international students.

  • I opted for an off-campus accommodation because it's definitely cheaper and affordable than the on-campus. I found my place here at Kijiji. My monthly rent is $550 for a shared room. I have wifi, laundry included in my rent.
  • Major challenges were legitimacy. A lot of people in Canada take loads of money from students and leave them stranded before they even arrive. I had my relative here in Canada who went for a check of the accommodation before I made it final.
  • There are very few chances of finding accommodation through Facebook marketing but try your luck mainly on Kijiji. There are genuine people on this website. I found my roommate here. My place is just 40 mins away from the York university by bus. Many students Come from Brampton, Mississauga, North York and also many reside in York village.

I chose to come to Canada primarily because of the fact that my family was moving here. I chose to study at York University due to its Goodwill and name in the market. My overall experience was a little below my expectations as the course did not really add to my current knowledge base.

Scholarship

Yes, I received $2000 scholarship for the first two semesters.

The overall experience at the University of Waterloo was not very good. I got academically burdened and faced a lot of obstacles in finishing my degree, which led me to transfer to York University. It could have been a much better experience if I knew how much academic stress I was going to face. There is a huge difference between studying in a college in India and studying in a University in Canada. Social life plays a very important role in keeping your sanity and not feeling homesick. International students must know how to manage their finances, cook good food and be regular at exercising and gym. Keeping a strong balance between work and study is essential too. More than anything else university in Canada taught me a lot about being independent and living a healthy adult life.

I have not received any scholarship.

I chose this university because of the location of the institute, the course, and the business school. Overall experience is good. Infrastructure is good. Campus is good. Cheap food options. But jobs are not available neither part time nor full time. That's a little disappointing. Apart from that professors are excellent and are very helpful.

No I didn’t got any scholarship

I had to submit an online SOP before the arrival of the offer letter. The main point of SOP is to be true to what you want and emphasize your skills and curiosity to learn. Additionally, u would just need a transcript certificate from your previous college My university experience was great as I got to learn many new things and get a chance to interact with people from all over the world.

Overall, it was an interesting experience due to new culture, new friends. On the academic front, I learned a-lot through case studies, projects, group assignments. I feel program length should be more than 12 months as it becomes very hectic for international students to manage all the workload.
