MIT Chennai Admission Process

BE and B.Tech Admission

All BE and B.Tech seats at MIT Chennai are filled through TNEA 2026 web-based counselling. No management quota or direct admission route exists at this government constituent college of Anna University.

Eligibility: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Minimum 45% aggregate (40% for reserved category). TNEA merit is calculated as (Mathematics x 2 + Physics + Chemistry) / 2, yielding a score out of 200. The formula gives Mathematics double weightage.

The TNEA counselling process for MIT Chennai:

  • Register at tneaonline.org with 10+2 marks. No separate entrance exam is conducted.
  • Merit list is published based on the TNEA formula. Reserved category certificates (caste, income) must be ready for verification.
  • Fill web options ranking preferred branch-college combinations. MIT Chennai is TNEA code 1311 (verify on tneaonline.org for 2026).
  • Seat allotment is published after each round. Allotted candidates report to MIT Chennai with original documents and pay the fee.

CSE and ECE are the most competitive branches. The 2026 OC category cutoffs for CSE and ECE are expected above 197 out of 200 based on previous cycles. Aeronautical Engineering typically closes above 190 out of 200 for OC. Candidates with lower scores may consider spot rounds or other Anna University constituent colleges.

ME and M.Tech Admission

ME eligibility requires BE/B.Tech in the relevant branch with minimum 50% aggregate (45% for SC/ST), plus a valid TANCET 2026 or GATE 2026 score. GATE-qualified candidates are prioritised and receive the AICTE monthly stipend. M.Tech follows the same eligibility. Admissions are through Anna University’s TNGASA counselling. Check annauniv.edu for the current cycle schedule.

PhD Admission

PhD at MIT Chennai requires ME/M.Tech with 55% aggregate in the relevant discipline. BE graduates with valid GATE scores are also eligible for some departments. Selection is through a department-level entrance test and interview. PhD scholars may receive fellowships from the institute, UGC, or SERB depending on the project. Check mitindia.edu for the current PhD notification and available supervisors.

Which is better for Computer Science? College of Engineering, Guindy or Madras Institute of Technology, Chrompet?

Aditi Roylives in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India

If you are an academically interested person, both NIT Kurukshetra and PEC Chandigarh will cherish you, and you will get very good opportunities in both colleges. Here are some key points to consider when deciding between the two:

Commonalities between the two colleges:

  • Both are constituent colleges of Anna University, so they share certain components, including course offerings, examination schedules, and university calendar events.
  • Faculty transfers between the colleges occasionally, and collaboration in research is not uncommon.
  • Both colleges have bright and interesting peers and professors to inspire you.

Where PEC Chandigarh is better:

  • Scale: PEC is a bigger college with more people.
  • Exposure: PEC is in the center of the city and is a well-known institution in the area.
  • Faculty: PEC's faculty in the CS department has more doctorates, and the department has been around for a few decades.
  • Seniors: PEC has been teaching computer science for longer than NIT Kurukshetra, so there are more alumni out there creating and contributing to organizations.
  • Sponsors: Due to the above reasons, PEC has very good sponsorship for college events.
  • Campus: PEC's campus is beautiful, with easy access to AU events like counseling, placements, and festivals that happen in AU grounds.

Where NIT Kurukshetra is better:

  • Seniors Link: The link with seniors is much stronger at NIT Kurukshetra, with a strong emotional dimension to the senior-junior relationship.
  • Entrepreneurship: NIT Kurukshetra has an incubation center on campus, which is great for students interested in starting up early on.
  • Programming: NIT Kurukshetra has a good competitive programming culture, with consistently high rankings in the Regional ACM-ICPC competitions.
  • Campus: NIT Kurukshetra's campus is conveniently located near Chromepet Railway station and the bus stop, making it easy to get around the area. The campus also has a rich history, serving as a hanger for wartime planes, and the aeronautics department hosts a couple of legacy planes for people to admire.

Ultimately, the decision between NIT Kurukshetra and PEC Chandigarh depends on your personal preferences and priorities. Consider factors such as location, campus facilities, faculty, and alumni network when making your choice.

Which college is best: the Madras Institute of Technology or the PSG College of Technology in Coimbatore?

Prarthana GhoshStudied at IIT Madras (2019)

When choosing between colleges, it can be helpful to compare them based on various factors such as the courses they offer and the reputation of the institution. However, it's important to keep in mind that what may be a good fit for one person may not be the same for another. In the case of comparing the Madras Institute of Technology and the PSG College of Technology in Coimbatore, here are some things to consider:

  • Mechanical and production (regular and SW) and automobile courses are better in PSG compared to MIT.
  • MIT offers only eight courses while PSG offers 18 different courses, including Robotics.
  • Aeronautical Engineering is good at MIT whereas PSG doesn't have this course.

Ultimately, it depends on the department in which you are aspiring to study. For example, if you are interested in Mechanical Engineering, PSG may be the best choice. If you are aiming to secure a seat in Aeronautical Engineering, MIT may be the better option. When making a decision, it's important to consider your own interests and passions. Don't choose a college or department solely based on reputation or what others recommend. Choose what you like and what you are interested in.

It's also important to keep in mind that your placement after graduation will depend on your own skill set and efforts. Don't rely solely on the college's reputation for job opportunities. Ultimately, the choice of college and department should be based on your own interests and goals. Choose what feels right for you and enjoy your college life to the fullest.

Is Madras Institute of Technology also considered as Anna University? Are CEG and MIT differentiated in terms of the brand value of Anna University?

Yashaswi SinghBE in Manufacturing, College of Engineering Guindy, Tamil Nadu, India (Graduated 2016)

Yes, MIT is a part of Anna University, despite the fact that, unlike the other three, it is not physically located on the university campus (CEG, ACT, and SAP).

Regarding the second question, there is no discrimination at Anna University as a whole because each student from each of the four campuses is treated equally, just as the NIRF does with Anna University. However, college is important when applying for jobs or for higher education, and a CEG student would unquestionably be a more desirable candidate because CEG is more prestigious and was the first to be established.

However, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, a distinguished alumnus of MIT, is the reason for its greater fame.

Is 129 enough for the cutoff for Madras Institute of Technology? Will I get into any field in MIT?

Tridha BanerjeeB.Tech IT from Madras Institute of Technology, Tamil Nadu, India

129 isn’t enough to get admission to Madras Institute of Technology. The required cutoff for any branch at MIT is around 195. For general category students, the cutoff is even higher.

MIT admission is purely based on merit and students are shortlisted through Anna University counseling. With a score of 129, there is little to no possibility of getting any branch at MIT.

Which university is better for aerospace engineering - SRM, Anna, or Madras Institutes of Technology, or Hindustan University?

Prerona Datta
Siddant GuptaStudied at Madras Institute of Technology, Tamil Nadu, India

Madras Institute of Technology is under Anna University. These two aren’t separate. If you want good job profiles with cushy salary packages, after completing your degree, MIT isn’t a good option. Not many core companies visit the campus drive for recruitment. Although placements in the non-core sector are good. MIT offers good academics and you can benefit from the institute if you are aiming to pursue higher studies. The course fee is nominal. The course costs around INR 1.58 lakhs.

SRM is a good option if infrastructure is your priority. Although the university fees are a little higher.
