IBS Hyderabad PhD FAQs
Ques. How does the IBS Hyderabad PhD structure differ from a typical Indian university doctorate?
Ans. Unlike most Indian PhDs that start directly with research, IBS Hyderabad uses a two-semester coursework phase covering eight doctoral courses including Research Methods and Qualitative Research Methods before any thesis work begins. This mirrors the North American doctoral model. Students complete a Summer Research Project before the qualifying examination. An Associateship component from Year 1 pairs each student with a faculty mentor for ten hours weekly, building the supervisory relationship early.
Ques. Can a working professional complete the part-time PhD without relocating to Hyderabad?
Ans. Yes. The part-time PhD is designed for working professionals who cannot commit to full-time campus presence. Coursework runs over two years, with students required on campus for nine days per quarter. Research guidance continues remotely between campus residencies. The maximum duration is eight years from enrolment. Part-time students pay the full INR 5,20,000 with no tuition waiver or fellowship benefits.
Ques. What happens if a student does not clear the IBS Hyderabad qualifying examination?
Ans. The qualifying examination tests theoretical depth and research readiness after coursework and the Summer Research Project. Students need a minimum GPA of 7.5 on a ten-point scale to appear. Candidates who do not clear the first attempt are generally given one additional chance. Failure to pass may result in exiting with a Post-Graduate Diploma from IFHE rather than advancing to the thesis stage.
Ques. What roles do IBS Hyderabad PhD graduates typically pursue after completing the programme?
Ans. IBS Hyderabad does not publish formal doctoral placement data. Most full-time graduates pursue faculty positions at NAAC-accredited or NIRF-ranked private management institutions. Some move into senior research analyst roles in consulting and financial services. The IFHE doctoral degree is recognised for faculty hiring at private universities across India. Positions at IIMs or top NIRF B-schools typically prefer credentials from institutions ranked higher in the NIRF Research category.
Ques. Is the Visiting Scholar Programme at IBS Hyderabad available to all PhD students?
Ans. The Visiting Scholar Programme is open only to full-time scholars who have cleared the qualifying examination and are in good academic standing. Eligible students spend five to six months at IFHE partner universities in the USA and Australia. The programme is self-funded. The monthly fellowship continues during the visit, but living costs at the host university are the student’s responsibility. Participation is optional.
