CEG Admission Process

CEG operates a fully merit-driven, no-management-quota admissions model. All UG seats are allotted through TNEA state counselling. PG seats go through Anna University centralised counselling.

B.E./B.Tech Admission (TNEA)

CEG is the most competitive government engineering college in Tamil Nadu. CSE and ECE closing marks regularly exceed 199 out of 200 in Round 1 of TNEA counselling. Even the less-competitive branches (Mining, Printing) close at 190 to 195 range for General Category.

  • Eligibility: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, minimum 45% PCM aggregate (40% for SC/ST/SCA of Tamil Nadu)
  • TNEA rank: Calculated from normalised Class 12 PCM marks. No separate entrance exam is conducted.
  • Seat types: Regular (Aided) branches have Tamil Nadu government-funded seats. Self-Supporting branches carry slightly higher fees but follow the same TNEA process.
  • No management quota exists at CEG. Every seat is a counselling allotment.

B.E. Lateral Entry (2nd year) is available for diploma holders through a separate TNEA Lateral Entry counselling. Eligibility: 3-year Diploma in a relevant engineering branch with 45% aggregate.

M.E./M.Tech Admission (TANCET/GATE)

M.E. and M.Tech admission is through Anna University PG counselling based on TANCET (Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test) rank or GATE score. CEG’s M.E. programmes are among the most sought-after in the Anna University system, with TANCET rank cutoffs typically falling in the top 500 to 1,000 for popular branches like CSE and Communication Systems.

  • Eligibility: B.E./B.Tech in relevant discipline with 55% aggregate (50% for SC/ST)
  • Entrance: TANCET ME rank (state-level) or valid GATE score
  • GATE score holders may be admitted to PG programmes with AICTE scholarship (INR 12,400 per month)

MBA and MCA Admission

MBA and MCA admission follows the same Anna University counselling route using TANCET scores. MBA eligibility requires any graduation with 50% aggregate. MCA eligibility requires BCA or B.Sc with Mathematics and 50% aggregate.

PhD Admission

PhD admission requires a PG degree with 55% marks. Candidates sit for an Anna University Research Entrance Test (AURET) followed by an interview with the Doctoral Committee. UGC JRF and GATE-qualified candidates may be exempted from AURET per UGC norms.

CEG Placements

CEG runs placement activities through the Centre for University and Industrial Collaboration (CUIC), with over 3,000 students from engineering and management departments participating each cycle. Over 200 companies visit the CEG campus annually for recruitment. The highest package for the 2024-25 cycle was INR 36 Lakhs and the average package was INR 7 LPA.

CEG Guindy: 7 Answered Questions

Which is better for Computer Science? College of Engineering, Guindy or Madras Institute of Technology, Chrompet?

Aditi Roylives in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India

If you are an academically interested person, both NIT Kurukshetra and PEC Chandigarh will cherish you, and you will get very good opportunities in both colleges. Here are some key points to consider when deciding between the two:

Commonalities between the two colleges:

  • Both are constituent colleges of Anna University, so they share certain components, including course offerings, examination schedules, and university calendar events.
  • Faculty transfers between the colleges occasionally, and collaboration in research is not uncommon.
  • Both colleges have bright and interesting peers and professors to inspire you.

Where PEC Chandigarh is better:

  • Scale: PEC is a bigger college with more people.
  • Exposure: PEC is in the center of the city and is a well-known institution in the area.
  • Faculty: PEC's faculty in the CS department has more doctorates, and the department has been around for a few decades.
  • Seniors: PEC has been teaching computer science for longer than NIT Kurukshetra, so there are more alumni out there creating and contributing to organizations.
  • Sponsors: Due to the above reasons, PEC has very good sponsorship for college events.
  • Campus: PEC's campus is beautiful, with easy access to AU events like counseling, placements, and festivals that happen in AU grounds.

Where NIT Kurukshetra is better:

  • Seniors Link: The link with seniors is much stronger at NIT Kurukshetra, with a strong emotional dimension to the senior-junior relationship.
  • Entrepreneurship: NIT Kurukshetra has an incubation center on campus, which is great for students interested in starting up early on.
  • Programming: NIT Kurukshetra has a good competitive programming culture, with consistently high rankings in the Regional ACM-ICPC competitions.
  • Campus: NIT Kurukshetra's campus is conveniently located near Chromepet Railway station and the bus stop, making it easy to get around the area. The campus also has a rich history, serving as a hanger for wartime planes, and the aeronautics department hosts a couple of legacy planes for people to admire.

Ultimately, the decision between NIT Kurukshetra and PEC Chandigarh depends on your personal preferences and priorities. Consider factors such as location, campus facilities, faculty, and alumni network when making your choice.

Which is better: the Anna University College of Engineering or NIT Trichy?

Ankita Garkoti
KishoreBTech from Anna University, Tamil Nadu, India (Graduated 2019)

I don’t think comparing both the colleges i.eAnna University College of Engineering and NIT Trichy is justified. This is because both are equally good in almost all the parameters. Both ranked among the top Engineering colleges in India. I have made a slight comparison based on the following factors to make a better choice:

Placements: NIT Trichy has an upper hand in placements. More core companies visit NITs in general than CEGs. This is because NIT is an established brand name.

Higher studies: CEG is slightly privileged in this aspect as it considers the TN state boards marks whereas NIT considers JEE performance. So the former is easier than the latter.

College life: College life at CEG is better because of its location. You can eat outside the hostel as many restaurants are available near the college. But NIT Trichy is far from the city so options for exploring are fewer.

Lastly, keep in mind that if you are choosing NIT then go for Trichy or Kurukshetra only. Don’t go for any other NIT leaving CEG.

Which should I choose, College of Engineering (Guindy) or NIT Puducherry?

Sakshi Gupta
Bhoomika Ranjan,M.Tech Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (2019)

NIT Puducherry is very new compared to College of Engineering Guindy (CEG). Let me share some points which might help you decide.

  • CEG is very old and experienced as an educational institution. It has well-established CSE and ECE departments with exceptional and updated lab facilities.
  • The syllabus is more or less similar in both colleges.
  • CEG has a more competitive student crowd which eventually helps students to boost their morale.
  • Due to its years of educational experience, CEG definitely has a better placement record than NIT Puducherry.
Categories CEG NIT Puducherry
Course Fee 2 lakh 5.49 lakh
Placement Percentage 80% 65%
Highest CTC 22 LPA 15 LPA
Average CTC 7.5 LPA 4 LPA
Recruiting Companies TCS, HP, Cognizant, Dell, etc. L&T, EY, JP Morgan, TCS, etc.

It is recommended that you go for CEG if you have to choose between these two. But if your choice only is NIT Puducherry then you can opt for it. It is a good college but as it started functioning recently, it is better to go for an experienced one.

Which should I go with: College of Engineering, Guindy or NIT Puducherry?

Sakshi Gupta
Richa Das,Studied at Anna University, Tamil Nadu, India (2015)

One of my friends studied at College of Engineering Guindy (CEG). According to him, it is a good institution, CSE being the highlighted department. Let me share the details I got to know from him.

  • CSE students are very much dedicated to their projects and assignments.
  • The faculty members are also very cooperative and highly experienced in their respective fields.
  • CSE always had and maintained a good placement record.
  • The campus itself is very huge, providing an appropriate place for students to study.
  • There are active clubs and international techno-management Fest 'Kurukshetra' and cultural fest 'Techofes'.
  • They also have a club for quizzes, Industrial quality maintenance, social activities, photography, college magazine, all of which are active throughout the year.
Categories College of Engineering Guindy
Course Fee 2 lakhs

Is studying ECE at NIT Trichy better than studying ECE at CEG?

Anuraag SharmaStudied at National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India

I have a few friends from both NIT Trichy and CEG and here is what I gathered from my conversations with them.

  • In terms of ranking, NIT Trichy is placed higher than CEG. This is because NIT admits students based on JEE Mains ranking and CEG admits students based on board marks.
  • In terms of placements, NIT Trichy would be way ahead of CEG. The college enjoys a better reputation and big firms come for placements.
  • For ECE, then recruiting companies visiting the on-campus placements at NIT Trichy are Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, SanDisk, Nvidia, etc. The average CTC offered is 6 LPA.
  • You can also go for higher education if you have a good GPA and great projects.
  • The faculty team is overall good. A few of them are extremely knowledgeable and conduct high-quality research. In terms of facilities, NIT Trichy has an edge over CEG.
  • Since CEG is in Chennai, there are other sources of enjoyment but NIT Trichy is 20 km away from Trichy.

Overall, NIT Trichy will be a better choice than CEG.
