Masters in Interior Design is a postgraduate course in interior architecture and designing of the physical environment. A candidate has to be a graduate from a recognised university in order to be eligible for this course. 

M.A. Interior Design is a two year program and has variants like Diploma in Design (Interior Design) or M.Arch (Interior Design). The course is completed over duration of four semesters.  The mode of admission is either through a group discussion or a personal interview.

The average tuition fee for the entire course ranges between 1.26 Lakhs INR to 1.50 Lakhs INR.

M.A. Interior Design graduates can employment in fields like National, International and Non-Government Organisations, Design Firms and Creative Agencies and work as Exhibition Designer, Design Consultant, residential interior designer etc. A fresh graduate of this course can expect an average salary of 3 Lakhs INR to 5 Lakhs INR.


The duration of the course is of two years and is completed over four semesters.

What is the course about?

This course is about the academic knowledge on architecture and interior designing which is a vital part in the human environment. The course is not only about learning the ways and means to decorate a room or a building but also imparts skills to plan resources and design architecture on a national or a global scale.

What are the other variants?

M.A. Interior Design mostly goes by the name Masters in Architecture and Design, while other colleges might only have Masters in Interior. There is no difference between the two except that the former involves academic knowledge on architecture as well as Design, and the latter focuses entirely on Interior Design.

How is this course different from M.Sc Interior Design?

The basic difference between the two lies in the nature of the disciplines. One is a Science stream and the other is Arts. M.Sc Interior Design teaches technical skills along with the theoretical knowledge on Interior Design.

M.A. in Interior Design is to do with designing and crafting skills, and theoretical knowledge about Interior Design.

Academic Options after M.A Interior Design

Students can further continue to do research through a Ph.D program offered by colleges for example: Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University, Hyderabad.

Eligibility Of the Master of Arts [MA] (Interior Design)

The candidate should have bachelor’s degree in either Interior Design or Interior Architecture or Design or Architecture or Town planning with at least 45% from any recognised university.

Candidates with a Diploma in Interior Design of four years duration with 50% marks minimum can also apply.

Some colleges like APIED College, also takes Office Training of 06 months as a basis for eligibility.

Mode of Entrance

The mode of Entrance is primarily merit based. After the forms are submitted, a merit list is prepared to call selected candidates for a personal interview.

There is no Entrance Exam for this course.

Personal Interview

In the interview, the candidate is mostly judged on the candidate’s familiarity with the key concepts in Interior Design.

It is advised to brush up on such topics to qualify in the Interview.

Selection Process

The selection process for the program is purely on the candidate’s performance in the group discussion and/or the personal interview.
