Epinephrine is a hormone that helps in regulating many bodily functions. It is usually secreted by some neurons and the medulla of the adrenal glands. It is also known as the adrenaline hormone and is used to regulate visceral functions. It increases the levels of glucose in the blood and increases cardiac output. Epinephrine prepares an individual for the “fight or flight” response. It is a key component of the sympathetic nervous system. It is responsible for controlling the pupil dilation response. A methyl group is present in the nitrogen side chain of epinephrine. This is what differentiates it from norepinephrine. In this article, we will discuss in detail Epinephrine and its functions.

Epinephrine or adrenaline is a hormone secreted by the medulla in the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands are a part of the ductless endocrine glands. Adrenaline is released in the bloodstream when the body experiences emotions like anger or fear which are very strong. Feeling such emotions causes an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, pupil dilation, piloerection (goosebumps) and sugar metabolism. This causes the Fight or Flight reaction; it helps in preparing the body for tough situations.

Epinephrine performs multiple functions in the human body which are as follows:
- In a stressful environment, the hormone is released into the bloodstream to various organs to enable the body to make a selected response.

Adrenaline has some positive effects on our body such as:
- Heart = Adrenaline increases heart rate and contractility. This increases the flow of blood in the body, with blood pressure getting high. Epinephrine injections are specifically given during Cardiac arrest to increase blood flow to arteries.
- Liver = Adrenaline causes glycogen breakdown into glucose. This helps in increasing blood glucose levels as well as free fatty acids. These are used by the body as fuel in situations of fight or flight.
- Muscles = Adrenaline improves muscle reaction to improve breathing. The epinephrine dilates the blood vessels in muscles. It increases oxygen flow to the muscles for better reaction and increased alertness.
