Example From Class 7 Chapter 3 Data Handling

Ques. Following are the marks in a class assessment. Calculate the range and arithmetic mean of the data?

4, 6, 7, 5, 3, 5, 4, 5, 2, 6, 2, 5, 1, 9, 6, 5, 8, 4, 6, 7.

Ans. Range of the data = Highest Value - Lowest Value

Therefore,

R =H-L

Highest value in the given data set= 9

Lowest value in the given data set= 1

Therefore, Range R= 9-1

=8

Arithmetic mean = {Sum of Observation} ÷ {Total numbers of Observations}

Sum of the observations= 4+6+7+5+3+5+4+5+2+6+2+5+1+9+6+5+8+4+6+7

=100

Total number of observations= 20

Therefore,

Arithmetic mean= 100/20

=5
