IU, International University of Applied Sciences is a private university of applied sciences headquartered in Erfurt with campuses in Cologne, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, and five other German cities. Founded in 1998 and institutionally accredited by the German Council of Science and Humanities, IU delivers English-taught bachelor’s and master’s degrees across business, IT, engineering, and health disciplines.

IU programmes popular with Indian students span BSc Computer Science, BSc Data Science, MSc Artificial Intelligence, MSc Cyber Security, and the MBA, offered on-campus, hybrid, and online. Cologne currently serves as IU’s primary campus for new international admissions on the German student visa route, following the Berlin admissions pause in early 2025. Indian nationals form 23% of IU’s international student cohort, drawn to STEM and business degrees across MS universities in Germany.

  • Founded: 1998
  • Type: Private University of Applied Sciences
  • Campuses: 9 across Germany, with Cologne as the international visa-track campus
  • Intakes: October (Winter Semester) and April (Summer Semester)
  • PG Total Fee: EUR 16,600 (INR 15.77 lakh) for the two-year Master’s, post-discount

IU applies an early-payment discount of up to 18% on bachelor programmes and 17% on two-year master programmes, alongside merit and India-specific scholarships. Indian applicants clear APS certification, block EUR 11,904 (INR 11.31 lakh) in a German blocked account, and plan for the federal maintenance benchmark before departure. IU graduates access Germany’s 18-month post-study job-seeker visa when they study in Germany.

Exchange rate used: 1 EUR = INR 95 as of August 2026

Admission Status: Closing Soon (October 2026 intake). IU runs rolling admissions with no fixed close date, but Indian applicants needing German student visa processing must submit at least three months before programme start; the practical cut-off for October 2026 entry is late August 2026 for Cologne campus placements. The next cycle, for April 2027 (Summer Semester) entry, is open now on a rolling basis with no fixed close date. Verify programme-specific deadlines on the IU official application portal.

IU International University of Applied Sciences Popular Courses and Fees 2027

IU fees follow flat per-degree pricing rather than programme-by-programme rates, which simplifies budgeting for Indian applicants. Bachelor programmes run 6 semesters at 180 ECTS, one-year masters run 2 semesters at 60 ECTS, and two-year masters run 4 semesters at 120 ECTS. The list price is reduced by an early-payment discount of up to 18% on bachelors and 17% on two-year masters when the entire tuition is paid upfront.

IU Postgraduate Programmes and Fees 2027

Most PG programmes at IU International University of Applied Sciences follow the two-year master pricing; one-year specialisations use the shorter fee track.

IU International University of Applied Sciences Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

IU admission requirements for Indian students centre on academic equivalence, English proficiency, and mandatory APS verification for the German student visa.

IU Postgraduate Requirements at IU International University of Applied Sciences

  • Academic: Bachelor’s degree with 55% aggregate or CGPA 5.5/10 (recommended); relevant discipline for MSc specialisations
  • English: IELTS 6.0 overall (no band below 5.5) OR TOEFL iBT 80 OR PTE Academic 51 OR Duolingo English Test 105 OR IU’s in-house English test
  • APS Verification: Mandatory APS certificate from APS India for all German student visa applications
  • Work experience: 1 to 2 years relevant experience recommended for MBA applicants

IU Undergraduate Requirements at IU International University of Applied Sciences

  • Academic: Class 12 completion with 70% or above (recommended); some tracks accept 60% with a foundation year
  • English: IELTS 6.0 overall, TOEFL iBT 80, PTE 51, or DET 105
  • APS Verification: Required for visa applications

Key insight: IU accepts English-medium instruction letters in place of standardised tests for many programmes, which lets Indian graduates of English-medium bachelors skip IELTS entirely; verify the waiver on the IU official English requirements page.

IU International University of Applied Sciences Acceptance Rate 2027

IU International University of Applied Sciences does not officially publish an acceptance rate, but the university operates an open-admissions model typical of German private universities of applied sciences. The estimated acceptance rate for qualified international applicants sits at 65-75% (estimated), subject to programme-specific capacity limits at Cologne. This estimate is directional and should not substitute for programme-level guidance from IU admissions.

Selection primarily verifies academic minimums, English proficiency, and APS status rather than competitive ranking. Programme places at popular Cologne MSc specialisations fill faster than the overall figure suggests.

Reality check: A high acceptance rate does not mean automatic admission for Indian applicants; visa refusal on documentation gaps or missing APS certification remains the more common blocker than IU’s own screening.

IU International University of Applied Sciences Campus, Facilities and Student Life

Cologne is IU’s primary campus for new international admissions, with additional physical campuses in Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Bad Honnef, Erfurt, Dortmund, and Dusseldorf serving domestic and continuing students.

  • Location: Cologne campus sits in the city’s western district with tram and S-Bahn (Cologne suburban rail) access; semester ticket covers regional travel across North Rhine-Westphalia
  • Housing: IU does not guarantee accommodation; students book via KStW student halls or private shared-flat portals, budgeting EUR 400 to EUR 600 monthly
  • Notable facility: myCampus digital learning platform integrates lecture videos, assignments, and grades across on-campus and online cohorts
  • Indian community: Active Indian student networks across Cologne, Munich, and Frankfurt organise Diwali events, cricket meets, and job-search circles

What Indian students say: Campus days at Cologne are intensive and cohort-based, giving quick access to career coaches and study peers; the biggest surprise is how much learning still happens on myCampus even during on-campus semesters.

IU is instead credentialed through Wissenschaftsrat institutional accreditation, FIBAA programme accreditation, and DAAD-recognised status, which German employers and Blue Card assessors accept as equivalents for hiring decisions.

Key insight: For an Indian graduate targeting the German job market, Wissenschaftsrat accreditation carries more weight with visa authorities and EU Blue Card processing than a QS World rank; rankings matter more when applying to non-EU employers.

IU International University of Applied Sciences Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

IU International University of Applied Sciences operates a Career Service that supports graduates across CV reviews, employer connects, and Blue Card documentation.

  • Median starting salary (MSc, market median): EUR 48,000 to EUR 56,000 annually (INR 45.60 to 53.20 lakh); reflects German market medians for entry-level STEM roles per Federal Employment Agency guidance, not IU-specific placement data
  • Median post-MBA salary (market median): EUR 55,000 to EUR 65,000 annually (INR 52.25 to 61.75 lakh); market benchmark for German MBA graduates with 2-4 years experience
  • Recruiter access: IU Career Service hosts job fairs and industry meetups; individual recruiter lists are not publicly disclosed

IU stands out for its flat per-degree pricing model that removes semester surprises and its rolling-admissions calendar that suits Indian applicants missing traditional German university deadlines.

IU International University of Applied Sciences suits Indian applicants who want an English-taught, accredited German qualification with a clear tuition ceiling and access to the 18-month post-study visa. The total two-year MSc investment of INR 15.77 lakh plus INR 22.62 lakh living costs sits well below the median German market salary of INR 45.60 lakh, giving a workable ROI within 2 to 3 working years for graduates who secure Blue Card roles.

It is not the right pick for applicants prioritising research prestige or global ranking optics for non-EU employers, since IU does not appear in QS or THE World rankings. Applicants targeting research doctorates or top consulting roles outside Germany may consider TU Munich or the University of Mannheim instead.

IU International University of Applied Sciences FAQs

Ques. Which campus at IU accepts new Indian applicants for on-campus study?

Ans. Cologne is currently IU’s primary campus for new international on-campus admissions on the German student visa route. The Berlin campus paused new international admissions in early 2025 following a Landesamt für Einwanderung ruling on hybrid programme classifications, so Indian applicants seeking a student visa should apply directly to the Cologne intake. Munich, Frankfurt, and other campuses primarily serve domestic and continuing students. Verify current campus availability on the IU application portal before choosing your programme.

Ques. Can IU students at IU International University of Applied Sciences work part-time in Germany?

Ans. Indian students on a German student visa can work 140 full days or 280 half days per calendar year without additional permission. Roles pay EUR 12 to EUR 18 per hour for retail and hospitality and EUR 15 to EUR 25 per hour for working-student STEM positions at Cologne tech employers. Working-student contracts at IT firms and consultancies are the highest-value route for IU MSc students because they build local CV credibility for post-study employment.

Ques. Does IU waive IELTS for Indian applicants with English-medium bachelors?

Ans. IU accepts a Medium of Instruction (MoI) letter from your Indian bachelor’s institution certifying English-medium study for many programmes, waiving IELTS or TOEFL requirements. The letter must be on institutional letterhead, signed by the registrar, and specify that all coursework and examinations were conducted in English. Some competitive MSc tracks still require a formal English test, so confirm eligibility on the IU official English requirements page before skipping the test.

Ques. How much money must Indian applicants block for the IU student visa?

Ans. Indian applicants must block EUR 11,904 (INR 11.31 lakh) in a German blocked account (Sperrkonto) for the 2026-2027 visa cycle. This corresponds to the federal Ausländerbehörde monthly minimum of EUR 992 for 12 months. Popular providers include Fintiba, Expatrio, and Coracle, and account opening typically takes 5 to 10 business days. Block the funds before your visa appointment at the German consulate in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, or Chennai.

Ques. What is the IU application fee for Indian students?

Ans. IU does not charge a separate application fee for most programmes; the EUR 1,500 (INR 1.43 lakh) registration fee is payable only after admission is confirmed and you accept the offer. This upfront cost is separate from tuition and covers matriculation, student ID, and initial platform access. Applicants can withdraw before signing the study contract without paying the registration fee, so submitting early carries no financial downside.

Ques. Are Indian education loans recognised for IU International University of Applied Sciences?

Ans. Major Indian lenders including SBI, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, ICICI, Avanse, Auxilo, InCred, and Prodigy Finance sanction education loans for IU programmes based on the admission letter and fee schedule. Public-sector banks typically offer collateral-backed loans up to INR 1.5 crore at 9.5% to 11%, while NBFCs and Prodigy Finance offer unsecured options up to INR 60 lakh at higher rates. Submit the IU offer letter, blocked-account confirmation, and APS certificate to accelerate sanction.

Ques. How does APS certification work for IU applicants from India?

Ans. Every Indian applicant to a German university including IU must obtain an APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate from the APS India office at the German Embassy in Delhi before applying for a student visa. Submit certified transcripts, degree certificates, and passport copies via the APS India online portal, pay the EUR 25 fee, and wait 4 to 6 weeks for issuance. The certificate is valid indefinitely and can be reused for multiple applications.

Ques. What refund policy applies if an Indian student withdraws from IU?

Ans. IU’s study contract includes a 14-day statutory withdrawal right after signing, during which paid tuition is fully refunded. After enrolment, standard notice periods of 3 to 6 months apply depending on the programme, with pro-rata tuition due for months already in progress. The EUR 1,500 registration fee is non-refundable once admission is accepted. Read the study contract’s cancellation clauses carefully before signing, especially if visa approval is still pending.

  • There are 2 campuses, as far as I know, one in Berlin and the other one is in Bad honnef. There is not much difference in campuses; the only difference is that Berlin is a big city and the capital of Germany so u have many options for a part-time job as a student, whereas Bad honnef is like a small town but in that you can work in nearby cities of Bad honnef. And there are no such clubs and events taking place in our college.

  • There are 2 campuses available right now, one in Berlin and the other in Bad Hof. In the Bad Hof campus, you can get the student accommodation from IU but it is not available in berlin and campus life here in Berlin is so refreshing.
  • The major clubs in college are like marketing for MBA students and coding clubs for CS students.

  • My college has 2 campuses, one in Berlin and one in Bad Hof. Both are good but I prefer Berlin because you can explore more in Berlin. Also, Berlin is the capital of Germany so you have more options than Bad Hof. But on both campuses, no fest clubs are there. This is the only disadvantage. But you can explore the country.

  • There were some activities, events, fests for new joiners. But I didn’t participate in any events. They had summer parties, welcoming parties etc. IU has two campus one in berlin and another one in Bonn.
  • Berlin is not good. They don’t arrange parties often but students arrange small house parties and enjoy that. The berlin campus doesn’t have much facilities, just classrooms.

Fees

  • The tuition fee for my one-year program was around €8,000, which I paid in full. Additionally, there were administration fees of approximately €1000 and other minor charges for transportation , bringing the total to around €9,500 for the entire course.
  • As for monthly expenses in Germany, I estimate €600-€700 for rent (depending on the type of accommodation), €250-€400 for food, €50-€100 for transportation, and €300-€550 for personal expenses, totaling around €1000-€1,550 per month.

Two campuses are available for International Students, i.e. Berlin and Bad-Honeff. Libraries, accommodations and other facilities are available. I chose the Berlin Campus. Various clubs, like coding, comedy, marketing and other major clubs, are available to choose from.

Overview

For the application, you need to submit your application on the university's website. On the website, you have to enter your every detail such as 10th, and 12th Graduation percentage and IELTS score. After getting selected one has to send the notarized copy of the transcripts, College Degree, Medium of Instruction letter from the graduation college,10th and 12th board mark sheet and certificate, to the college via post. I prepared for the IELTS exam from free resources on Google and youtube.

Campus Life

IU provides a vibrant campus life. Students from all over the world come to study and learn. This gives us an opportunity to immerse ourselves in different cultures. Although the number of fellow countrymen varies according to intake, I have found a good number of Indians there. In my class of 15, there are 3 Indians including me. The university is well equipped with online and offline libraries, where we can find several books, academic journals, etc for study and research. Well-maintained courts and fields are available for the students who enjoy various sports such as football, tennis, badminton, basketball etc. There are health centres on campus where trained and equipped health professionals are there for health needs. One can join various clubs according to their needs and interests. Each club are dedicated to music, dance, photography, entrepreneurship etc. The university also organizes an annual fest.

Overview

I choose this University because of many reasons. However, I will mention some of them only. The main reason is the course curriculum is up to date and this university focuses on the practical exposure of the student and prepares the student who is industry ready. The admission process is so easy and so many courses are available which is in high demand nowadays. The application process is so easy that anyone could directly apply to the university and no need to take any help from a consultant. I did everything on my own and the admission advisor of IU was so helpful, He assisted me in choosing the best study program for me and helped me to get a discount.

Campus Life

I like IU University for the new concept of study IU introduced in education which is blended learning and the flexibility of examination, Which you will not get anywhere in the world that is why students from all over the world get admitted to IU and it becomes the largest University of Germany. Diversity could be found in everything at IU.

Overview

It was good. The management could have been a bit better in terms of giving us the 3000 euros discount as they have to our other batch mates. Overall it was a nice experience. The professors were cooperative and supportive.

Campus Life

Well, when I came in 2019 to Berlin, the campus life was good. The college is organizing some events like Christmas party but after Covid everything. And it seems like there is no college life or events or something going on that keeps the students motivated and socializing.
