CLAT 2027 Exam Pattern Unchanged; NLU Consortium Report Out

The Consortium of National Law Universities has decided to retain the existing CLAT 2027 exam pattern and syllabus. The expert committee's proposed structural reforms will now be considered for possible rollout from CLAT 2028.

CLAT 2027 Exam Pattern Unchanged; NLU Consortium Report Out

The Consortium of National Law Universities (Consortium of NLUs) has retained the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2027 exam pattern and syllabus. The Governing Body announced this decision on July 21, 2026. It also published the Expert Committee Report on the official website at consortiumofnlus.ac.in. The panel had submitted this report to the Consortium on February 2, 2026.

The committee had proposed a complete redesign of the CLAT paper structure. However, the Governing Body has held back all structural changes for the CLAT 2027 cycle. Paper setters may still adopt the committee’s suggestions related to question quality this year.

Who Was on the Expert Committee?

The Consortium constituted the Expert Committee on September 15, 2025. Its task was to conduct a complete review of the CLAT examination process.

The panel was co-convened by Professor Dev Saif Gangjee of the University of Oxford and Professor Tarunabh Khaitan of the London School of Economics.

The other committee members were:

Professor Surabhi Ranganathan of the University of Cambridge

What Did the Committee Recommend?

The panel recommended moving away from coaching-based memorisation. It wanted CLAT to assess candidates’ genuine logical aptitude, legal aptitude, comprehension and problem-solving abilities.

The main structural proposals are listed below.

Proposals for the Undergraduate Paper

Consolidate the CLAT UG paper from five sections into three sections.

Combine Logical Reasoning and Legal Aptitude into one section.
Retain Language and Comprehension as a separate section.
Keep Quantitative Techniques as the third section.

Remove the General Knowledge and Current Affairs section entirely.

Proposals for the Postgraduate Paper

Introduce a dedicated Legal Knowledge section.

Add a new Problem Questions component.

What Stays the Same for CLAT 2027?

The CLAT UG paper will retain its existing five-section structure. The sections are:

English Language
Current Affairs and General Knowledge
Legal Reasoning
Logical Reasoning
Quantitative Techniques

The CLAT PG paper structure will also remain unchanged for the 2027 examination cycle.

The Consortium has stated that paper setters may improve question quality using the Expert Committee Report’s recommendations. However, the number of sections, exam structure and syllabus will remain unchanged.

The Consortium has opened a public feedback window for the Expert Committee Report. Aspirants, teachers, parents and other stakeholders may submit their views.

The last date to send feedback is August 31, 2026.

Why This Matters

The committee had flagged that a timely release was crucial for a 2027 rollout. The report reached the public five months after submission. As a result, structural reform now shifts to CLAT 2028 at the earliest.
