New Delhi: The Delhi University students undertaking undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs might soon have the opportunity to pursue a 'joint degree’. The proposal is set to be presented and discussed during a council meeting on November 30, 2023.
In the initial stage, Delhi University has planned to allow students to simultaneously pursue a degree through both regular and distance modes. Furthermore, there are considerations for collaborations with foreign universities, offering students the chance to study abroad for a semester.
Furthermore, the university is also exploring the possibility of introducing joint PhD programs after consultations with relevant stakeholders.
Delhi University to Collaborate with Foreign HEIs
Earlier in December 2022, the university constituted a committee to assess the viability of a joint degree program in accordance with the National Education Policy 2020.
The forthcoming academic council session will scrutinise a document outlining a "Twinning degree program with Foreign Higher Education Institution (FHEI)," allowing students from the University of Delhi and its affiliated colleges to spend a semester studying in a foreign university, earning credits that count toward their degree requirements.
The collaboration will specifically target Foreign Higher Education Institutions (FHEIs) ranked within the top 500 according to the QS World Ranking. Students will have the opportunity to spend one semester at a foreign university, earning a minimum of 18 credits and a maximum of 26 credits.

DU Joint Degree Program for UG and PG Students
Regarding the pursuit of two academic programs, the university outlines that in the initial phase, students can undertake one program in full-time physical mode and another through open and distance learning (ODL)/online mode exclusively.
Individuals interested in pursuing a dual degree should formally inform the university through the head of the department or the principal of the college.

However, it is highlighted that students are prohibited from concurrently undertaking two identical academic programs, such as BCom (H) and BCom (P), even if one is intended to be completed through ODL/online mode.
Students granted permission to pursue two academic degree programs simultaneously are obligated to meet all academic requirements independently for each program. This includes attendance, internal assessment, continuous assessments, submission of assignments, presentations, and examinations.
Moreover, for research projects, dissertations, or entrepreneurial pursuits in the fourth year of the undergraduate program, the research theme or topic must differ for the two distinct degrees.
