Three colleges affiliated with DU are preparing to implement a four-year integrated teacher education programme of the government that will start from the 2023-24 academic year.
New Delhi: According to a senior official, three colleges affiliated with Delhi University are preparing to implement the government's four-year integrated teacher education programme starting from the 2023-24 academic year.
These colleges, namely Shyama Prasad Mukherji College for Women, Mata Sundari College for Women, and Jesus and Mary College, have received approval from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) to offer the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP).
As part of this transition, the DU-affiliated colleges will now accept admissions through entrance exams conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), rather than the Common University Entrance Test (CUET).
The latest reports suggest that previously these colleges were a part of the selected group of eight that used to offer the distinctive Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.) program. However, Aditi Mahavidayalay, Gargi College, Institute of Home Economics, Lady Shri Ram College for Women, and Miranda House have expressed their intentions to introduce the Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) in the coming year.
Further, the university has scheduled an academic council meeting for Friday, during which the implementation of ITEP will be a topic of discussion.
The Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) will replace the B.El.Ed. program, which was established in 1994. Delhi University was the sole university offering its own four-year integrated program.
Admission to ITEP will be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) through the National Common Entrance Test (NCET). In the previous year, admission to B.El.Ed. was carried out via the Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUET).
Meanwhile, ITEP is a flagship program of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCET) under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. On May 4, DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh granted approval for the implementation of the program.
