New Delhi: A recent research conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Delhi) has predicted a substantial increase in the fire weather index (FWI) for forest fires in central and south India, as well as the Himalayan region, by the end of the century.

The study by IIT Delhi highlights the increase in the incidence of fires in these regions is due to human activities, emphasizing that such activity is contributing to unprecedented changes in the Earth's climate. The research was authored by Anasuya Barik, a PhD student, and Somnath Baidya Roy, a professor at the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences of IIT Delhi.

The research highlights the impact of human actions on the climate and the resulting consequences of fire risks and has identified human activity as the primary cause behind the increased occurrence of fires in these regions. According to the research study, this temperature increase will elevate the fire weather danger in numerous Indian forests.

What did the IIT Delhi Research highlight?

The IIT Delhi study noted that the atmospheric temperatures are escalating swiftly and are projected to persist in their upward trend. This warming trend is expected to heighten the risk of fire weather in numerous Indian forests.

Published in Communications Earth and Environment, a journal within the Nature Springer group, the study is available online for review at nature.com/articles/s43247-023-01112-w. 

The study indicates an expected increase in humidity in the Western Ghats, aligning with the conventional understanding that elevated temperatures elevate the risk of forest fires. Interestingly, the research reveals that this isn't a universal trend for all forests. 

Humid tropical forests in the Western Ghats and certain regions of the North-East, where projections indicate an increase in rainfall and humidity, are expected to experience lower Fire Weather Index (FWI) despite the overall warming conditions.

Somnath Baidya Roy emphasized the necessity, stating that studying forest fires in India requires a high degree of granularity to accurately capture the diversity in climate and forest types throughout the country. 

Even the broad-scale global studies with low resolution are not suitable for their context, Roy added. 

Anasuya Barik expressed that their study, being the first of its kind in India, holds considerable implications for comprehending and handling forest fires. 

She pointed out that their study underscores the need to establish fire danger thresholds and formulate management policies at local levels, rather than adopting a national-level approach.
