The Ministry of Education, on Sunday (23 August 2020), invited suggestions from school principals and teachers for implementing the new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The Indian government approved NEP 2020 last month, replacing the age-old National Policy on Education as framed in 1986. New policies now aim at transforming school and higher education system in the country, to claim India as Global Knowledge Superpower by 2035.
Union Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal tweeted, “We believe that the teachers are the key to the implementation of NEP 2020, and hence we have decided to call for suggestions from all school teachers and principals from across the country on how to take the implementation process of #NationalEducationPolicy forward.”

On this occasion, Anita Karwal, School Education Secretary, said, “To simplify the process for the teachers, the suggestions are being called on each theme of the NEP related to school education, through a question-answer process.
The questions are framed in such a manner that teachers can relate to them from their experience as teachers and classroom transactions.
Each question also gives reference to the paragraph of NEP to which refers to, to enable the teacher to read the same for better understanding of the policy before uploading suggestions.”

As per Karwal, suggestions are called in as limited words format that will be reviewed by experts’ team of NCERT. Teachers whose suggestions seem useful for incorporation in the National Curriculum Framework will be separately contacted.
She added, “States and UTs may hold video conference on priority, send to teachers WhatsApp groups being maintained at various levels, or use the route of SCERTS and DIETs, for ensuring wide dissemination of this process.”
The government, private or affiliated schools (to different secondary school boards), can upload their suggestions from 24-31 August through the dedicated links.

CBSE Instructs Affiliated Schools on NEP 2020
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), has directed teachers to participate in a competition for submitting suggestions.
The Ministry of Education has organised an online competition for teachers ‘Preparation of Communication Material’ for making the implementation process of NEP 2020, a successful step.
A statement by CBSE reads: “The participating teachers will have to prepare communication material on different themes of NEP 2020 related to school education.

The 10 best-selected entries will be forwarded to NCERT for National Level Selection. The entries submitted by the teachers may be used by the Ministry of Education in future….”
New Reforms in National Education Policy 2020
New NEP reforms suggest of teaching in regional languages till Class 5 while reducing the otherwise high stakes on board exams. The 5+3+3+4 curricular structure will replace 10+2 format, meaning to involve students of age groups 3-8, 8-11, 11-14 and 14-18 years in the education system.
For higher education, there will be a common entrance exam for all universities, a single regulatory body for all colleges except for medical and law colleges. The M.Phil program will be scrapped along with creating common norms for both public and private colleges and universities.
