The National Medical Commission has taken measures to address the overcrowding of medical colleges by imposing a population-based cap of 100 million people for the number of undergraduate medical seats available in each state.

New Delhi: In an effort to limit the crowding of medical colleges in each state, the National Medical Commission has imposed a cap of 100 million population for the number of undergraduate seats. This limitation on the number of seats per state was detailed in a recent notification.

This allocation method has the potential to increase the number of MBBS seats in the country by approximately 40,000 if the medical colleges are evenly distributed. The primary aim is to mitigate regional disparities in the availability of healthcare professionals and ensure the delivery of high-quality education.

The Under-Graduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) under the National Medical Commission (NMC) is dedicated to enhancing the medical education system.

Their goal is to make quality and affordable medical education more accessible, ensure a sufficient number of well-trained medical professionals nationwide, promote equitable and universal healthcare, encourage a community health approach, and make medical services available to all citizens.

This initiative was implemented in response to concerns expressed by several courts regarding the overcrowding of medical colleges.

Recently, the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court expressed concerns to the National Medical Commission about the overcrowding of medical colleges. In response to these considerations and in light of recent MSR guidelines for 2023, the commission has incorporated a provision to restrict the number of undergraduate seats in each state.

Notably, all the Southern states, such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, have voiced their opposition to these new rules established by the NMC regarding the establishment of new medical colleges. In contrast, Kerala has decided to seek exemptions based on its specific needs.
