New Delhi: Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), Mumbai has announced that polytechnic diploma holders will now be eligible to take admission to four years long BE in Marine Engineering course without appearing for CET from the academic session 2022-23.

As per DGS Mumbai, candidates who have completed their polytechnic diploma courses from a recognized university can seek lateral entry admission to the second year of four-year Marine Engineering courses at Indian Maritime University, MTIs, etc, without CET scores.

The decision to not to make the Common Entrance Test (CET) score mandatory for admission to the Marine Engineering course has been made after students requested the authority to remove the scores from the admission process as they were not able to cover the syllabus during school.

Informing about the requests, officials informed that since polytechnic students are not able to cover class 11th and class 12th subjects due to their diploma course, they are facing issues in preparing for CET 2022 exam as it covers the syllabus from senior secondary classes.

Due to this, candidates and MTIs have requested the authorities to exempt the CET 2022 from those who have completed their polytechnic diploma courses and wish to apply for BE courses through the lateral entry process.

Earlier, in April 2020, the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) made the CET a compulsory examination for those interested and eligible candidates who were applying for admissions to pre-sea maritime courses from the academic session of 2022-21.

The directorate further asked the Indian Maritime University to conduct the CET for its various approved Maritime Training Institutes (MTIs) for its three pre-sea maritime courses; BE/BTech in Marine Engineering, BSc in Nautical Science, and Diploma in Nautical Sciences.

However, for the academic session 2020-21, students were exempted from Common Entrance Test (CET) due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation in the country. Following this, admission to these courses was done based on criteria released by the DGS for MTIs.

For this year, it was announced that the admission authority will accept CET 2022 scores for admission to maritime courses. Those who would not have a valid entrance exam score will not be considered for the admission process and their applications will be rejected.

Taking into aspirants' requests, the Directorate decided to exempt the CET from the MITs BE admission process. The official circular regarding the changes in the admission process for Marine engineering courses has also been released on the official portal of the government.
