What is meant by the terms "IGNOU study circle" and "IGNOU regional center"?
IGNOU study centre is the place allocated for counselling sessions. This is the place where you submit your assignments at the end of a semester of a specific course. The study centre approves your assignments and signs the exam form which makes you eligible to sit for the exam.
IGNOU regional centre is just the administration department of your course. Any queries related to ID Card, Books, Exam Form submission, and re-registration can be submitted here. Your examination form along with the prescribed fee is also accepted at RC only.
In simple words, the study centre is the teaching department whereas the regional centre is your administration department.
What are some helpful tips for students starting their first year at University of Kerala?
As one of my friends was a student at University of Kerala, let me mention some of the facts you should keep in mind during your first year.
- Stick to the syllabus and thoroughly read it. Mark the ones out of the syllabus, as attempting them can fetch you some marks.
- Try to take part in extracurricular activities. Join NCC/NSS if you have an option.
- Always try to be on good terms with the faculty members, as they control the internal exam marks.
- Accept the fact that results are not published on time.
- Make sure you have a 90% attendance, as 5 marks are added to your result for it.
- It is better if you refrain from student politics as they could be very time-consuming and distracting.
- Do not rely on teachers to complete the syllabus, in the end, you have to study and complete it.
It is recommended that you get your degree from any private university. Though it will cost much, you will get enough exposure to mold your career in shape.
What should be my strategy for getting admission in IIT Bombay for an MTech in the CSE branch?
One of my friends made it into IISc with a rank of 10. I enquired about the strategy he adopted to score such high marks. He told me about his 3 milestone theories and the things he achieved on the way. The final outcome is 75 marks in GATE which will help you get CSE in IIT Bombay.
1st Milestone: The first and foremost goal you should set is to achieve 25 marks in GATE. This can be done by working on some basic mathematics, aptitude, and core subjects. This can be done from
the college itself. Try to secure 25 marks in the final year on the first attempt and once you are done move to the second milestone.
2nd milestone: You have to achieve another 25 marks to make it 50. I suggest not taking a gap to prepare for this. This can be done over the 2 years after your graduation during which you can take up an IT job and increase your work experience. This will be useful during placements at IIT Bombay.
To achieve this milestone, read some more core mathematics, and cover 3–4 core subjects previous 25 marks revision. If you are able to secure 50 marks over the next couple of attempts, you don’t have to worry much as you can get admission in any IIT.
3rd milestone: If you want those additional 25 marks take help from some professionals and seniors.
My friend got a 10 rank after working on this strategy and he is working at Microsoft today.
I have got 7.2 CGPA in CBSE 10th Board Exams, how much in 12th class is needed to get into IIT Kanpur?
In Engineering, your recent achievements and ranks are more valuable than your past academic performances. Unless you have a very low CGPA, your class 10th and 12th marks won’t affect your placements. However, your class 12th marks do determine your JEE rank and the branch you get which in turn affects your placements. But it’s important to note that this is a very short term effect and 10 years down the line, neither your branch nor your class 12 marks will affect you. For interviews, prepare a solid credible reason to justify your low marks, and don’t hide it.
Now, coming to your question, how much is needed in class 12 to get into IIT Kanpur, well there are no fixed marks that will get you into IIT Kanpur. But you can rest assured as the board exams and JEE papers are much similar and you don’t have to invest extra time or efforts preparing for them separately.
What should I choose between IIT BHU CSE and IIT Guwahati Maths and Computing?
Both IIT BHU CSE and IIT Guwahati MnC are excellent options and the choice of the branch is a personal matter depending on the candidate's preferences rather than the credibility of the branch. Here are a few parameters on which we can draw a general comparison between the two courses.
- Course structure: IIT Guwahati’s MnC program has a well-structured curriculum with the perfect blend of Computer Science, finance, and Mathematics courses. By the end of the program, you will be eligible to sit for software as well as finance placements. IIT BHU CSE too is known for its flexible course structure with a plethora of electives to choose from.
- Coding culture: Undoubtedly, IITBHU has a better coding culture than IIT Guwahati. The ambiance is quite competitive at BHU if that’s what you are after. However, MnC too is gaining popularity and the decreasing opening rank can be seen as a proof of the same.
- Peer group: High JEE rankers prefer IIT Guwahati over IIT BHU and thus the peer group of IIT Guwahati is more refined and superior in quality.
- Campus and student life: IIT Guwahati has an amazing campus and its students get to live a very dynamic and lively college life. IIT-BHU’s campus on the other hand is underdeveloped and you can also find student politics here. IIT Guwahati is the best choice for nature lovers who like solace and peace while IIT BHU is for those who want to experience city life as well.
- Student life: Both institutes have great clubs and activities to promote the holistic development of students. Students are allotted single rooms right from the first year at IIT Guwahati which is different from IIT BHU. Mess food is better at BHU. IIT Guwahati is a clear winner in sports, cultural and technical clubs, etc.
- Placements: Both institutes have equally good placement scenarios with major recruiters like Microsoft, Google, Tower Research, Flipkart, etc. visiting both these campuses. CS and MnC students receive similar placement offers and in fact, being in MnC makes you eligible for both finance as well as software jobs.
Both the institutes and branches have their own strengths and weaknesses and the final decision should be based on what you want from your degree. If it’s a competitive environment you are after, go for IIT BHU, while if it’s a rich college life experience you want, then IIT Guwahati is your destination.
Is attending IIM-Ahmedabad worth rejecting a five-digit monthly salaried job in a tech company?
Continue working if you enjoy your job and see it developing your ambitions and you as a person. Make a plan to work for a few years, switch jobs/profiles a few times to gain more diverse experience, and then get an MBA from a more internationally renowned business school in the US/Europe. If you were able to get into IIM-A now, chances are you will be able to do so again while you are still young.
Join IIM-Ahmedabad if you don't yet have clear life ambitions/roadmaps and don't see much value in your job beyond its salary value. As you get older, you will lose direction and enthusiasm in a soulless job.
You will then be too old for IIMs but not competitive enough for schools in the United States or Europe, or even ISB or IIMA PGPX. So it's better to get that degree now rather than later.
How are the placements of chemical engineering at IIT Kanpur?
IIT Kanpur Chemical Engineering placement scenario is excellent and much better than that at old IITs such as KGP and Delhi. The job opportunities offered are plenty and the packages offered too are decent.
IIT Kanpur does not release branch-wise placement statistics however, I got hold of the previous year’s placements that might help you get a slight idea of the placement scenario at IIT Kanpur.

Is BIT Mesra a good architecture college?
My friend did his B. Arch from BIT Mesra, so I can give you a brief idea about the course.
Architecture depends on your vision, on your projection, and how you see the world. Therefore, college views could differ. Architecture is not like maths which would be the same throughout the world, it is designing and depends on how you can plan your thoughts.
Some of the striking features of BIT-Mesra (Architecture) are as follows.
- BIT-Mesra has a state-of-art course structure. This may not sound important but most of the top universities look at the course structure for Masters.
- BIT-Mesra has great faculty. Most of them get an offer from the most prestigious colleges around the world.
- B.I.T. gives a strong software and structural base to students. They are successful in making you think economically too, very important in a country like India.
- There is a good balance between contemporary architecture and traditional architecture.
- Alumni Network: The Alumni network at BIT-Mesra is strong as well as global. In college, electives like Architectural Journalism, Photography, Conservation, and Urban Planning are good to have and though, they are only a few among so many, it gives you an idea of different fields you can aim for from B.Arch.
- Placements or Job-Scenarios: On-campus training and placements isn't a very happening scene in BIT-M, though there are amazing placement stats among other departments. But things are different for architecture and they have an effective system builtin in the course structure including internships in the final semester. This also happened because students generally have internships finalized (through personal emails) much before the Career Fair starts.
- Co-curricular: Being a nationally recognized school, great co-curricular activities are happening in the college regularly. These co-curricular lead to the personal growth of an individual and architecture comes out as the winner in many activities and competitions. Great workshops are organized throughout the year at the institute.
Going by the above factors, it is safe to say that BIT Mesra is a good option for pursuing a degree in Architecture.
What is the difference between life at IIT and NIT?
IITs and NITs offer exceptional education in the technical field. Here are some of the key differences between these institutes.
- IIT is a Govt. funded association of educational institutes aimed to provide highly skilled engineers, scientists, and technologists. NITs are independent technological and research institutes.
- At present, there are 23 IITs and 31 NITs in India.
- For undergraduate studies, IIT and NIT both take admission through JEE Advanced and Main.
- IITs offer better infrastructure and facilities.
- Placement and packages solely depend on the particular institute. IITs usually have a better brand presence in the industry.

Is a distance education degree from the Shobhit University valid?
Yes, Shobit University distance education courses are valid. The university is approved by University Grand Commission (UGC). The university received a ‘B’ grade from NAAC as well. The technical courses offered by the university are AICTE accredited.
So, you can rest assured that the courses offered by Shobhit University are legitimate.
