NIT Durgapur, B.Tech, Metallurgical And Materials Engineering

Reviewed on Oct 17, 2021(Enrolled 2020)

Remarks

NIT durgapur is one of the good option for btech if anyone is not qualified to good and old IIT. Nit durgapur has ranked 4th position among all NIT's and 30th among all engineering college including all IIT's in NIRF ranking 2021. Admission is done through the qualification in JEE mains. As my rank in JEE advanced was not so good to secure a seat in IIT and my desired branch. so, I was trying to get a seat in top NIT. Thenafter jossa councling I got placed in NIT durgapur and in Metallurgical and Material science engineering. For jossa councling I was in guidance of Mr. Amit ahuja who is the chief counsellor of Allen Kota. It is highly recommended youtube channel for jossa councling. Link :-https://youtube.com/c/AmitAhujaOfficialAll Good so far !!

Course Curriculum Overview

I am in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. It is a good branch in terms of placements and also for reserch work. We are 1:6 in ratio of faculty to students. All the faculties are well educated and phd holder from renowned college like IIT and NIT. Excellent for their teaching methodology and behaviour. All the exams are done on right time as scheduled by academic section. Exams are of good difficulty level and if anyone is serious in study and attending the lectures properly then it won't be hard to pass the paper.

Class Size: 65Course Fees: INR 500000 per year

Internships Opportunities

0.5

No any internship yet.

Placement Experience

Out of 634 eligible students, 456 students were placed in NIT Durgapur placements 2020. National Institute of Technology (NIT) Durgapur, has concluded its academic batch 2019-20 placement in September 2020. Out of 634 eligible students, 456 students were placed in NIT Durgapur placements 2020. More than 50 students were offered double or triple job offers by top companies.Recnetly, the college has collaborated with companies in private as well as government sector. The collaboration with TCS brings in internship offers for the students, also the company is regular recruiter of NIT Durgapur placements. Among government names, SAIL Durgapur hires lot of students from NIT Durgapur for graduate trainee roles with regular exchange of knowledge between the two.

College Events

We are in pandemic situation so I haven't visited my college yet. there are so many clubs running online. All the infrastructure are very good and are well planned. The library of NIT D is housed in a separate building having three floors with a collection of 1.2 lac volumes which includes text books, reference books & bound volumes of journals, standards etc. It has subscribed to about 180 current print journals and 800+ online journal. Library operations have been automated with the help of an integrated library software package, LIBSYS-4.

Fees and Financial Aid

Fees (including tution, hostel and all)will be about Rs. 2 lacks per year for general students. There is also fee wavier for the students of sc/st/obc/ews section. if any student's family income is less than 1 lacks then they will pay zero amount of tution fee. for 2 to 5 lacks family income they have to pay 2/3 rd of tutuon fee and for more than 5 lacks no wavier is there.I am only in second year so I dont have any idea about job.

Campus Life

NIT Durgapur is a good college with good placement opportunities. But there is a curve to this line. The placements are only good when you are from non-core branches like CSE, ECE and IT. Even electrical branch is not allowed to sit for most of the top companies like Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, etc.

Hostel Facilities

The hostels are really great. Hostel life is amazing and there is a lot of freedom for students. There is no night curfew and students can roam about 24 hrs inside the college campus. NIT Durgapur has 3 girls hostels. HALL 7 for the first years (1 room is shared by 4 or 2 people according to the rooms capacity), HALL 10 for the second and third years (1 room shared by 4 people) and HALL 8 for the final years (each one has their own room). Each hostel has a mess serving breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner. I always find the quality of food decent in the first month of each semester, and then get bored and end up at the canteen or other eating joints.Girls are allowed to enter or leave the hostels only from 6am to 10pm.There's security round the clock.

Admission

For admission we have to qualify jee mains .Joint Entrance Examination Main, formerly All India Engineering Entrance Examination, is an all India standardised computer-based test for admission to various technical undergraduate programs in engineering, architecture, and planning across India. The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency

Fixed timetable Classes, regular assessment and class test
The professors are very qualified and their teaching style is excellent.
A lot of books are available in the main library as well as in the department library

Course Curriculum Overview:

The syllabus and curriculum of Calcutta University is aligned with other entrance examination (eg.IIT JAM, JEST, TIFR, GATE etc.) Specially for the Physics BSc course. And the syllabus is updated Artificial intelligence bacis, Python Advance level is in syllabus, it's completed in college. Point to be Noted - The time given to prepare for the exam is sometimes ample but sometimes it is very less. So we have to prepare syllabus in time which is little bit frustrating.

Dislikes

Things i disliked was the most has to be the locality the college is really nice but the locality is a bit shady

Course Curriculum Overview:

I always wanted to take up Journalism as a career and the thing which caught my attention in this college is that they have a fully equipted studio room and other colleges may have one but the students even publish there own news report here it prepars us very well for the real world

Supportive Faculty - The professors are highly qualified, approachable and always willing to help students
Free wifi support - There are free wifi support for both student and faculty
Fee Structure - It is very affordable and low compared to other colleges in the region

Dislikes

Placement support is below average, and most studnets have to apply for off campus jobs independently, which is really pathetic in the era of ai where getting a job as a fresher is so difficult
There is no dedicated support or placment cell initiative to help studnets land meaningful summer internships or any kind of internships

Placement Experience:

Students become eligible for campus placements starting from the 7th semester. For placement drives, we have to visit the main campus, Techno Main Salt Lake (TMSL). Since students from other Techno India campuses and branches also participate, the competition is extremely high. In the 2025–2026 academic year, fewer companies visited. Only two companies, Dronahost and WishCare, visited our specific campus directly. The remaining drives—mostly service-based companies like TCS and EY, along with a few startups—were conducted at the main campus. The remaining drives mostly service based companies like TCS, EY etc and quite a few startups has visited to main campus. The package they offered mostly in between 3.5lpa - 6 lpa. Furthermore the selection process of those startups is quite rigorous often consisting of upto 5 rounds of interview, two technical rounds with two technical interviews, and HR round My plans after getting the degree is either pursue an MBA or preparing for govt jobs

Campus life: Hype vs Truth

Likes

The discipline is followed very strictly. Also you have access to library which is good, teachers are helpful and no ragging policy which is strictly followed and has a decent environment.
Thery conduct seminars which encourages students. Many faculty members are knowledgeable experienced in their respective subjects and helpful willing to solve doubts beyond the classroom also.
The college has decent infrastucture including classrooms, labs and library .

Dislikes

While the curriculum is decent ,it lacks sufficeint practical implementation.More hands on projects, real world application and industry exposure would improve learning significantly.
Campus life can sometimes fell limited in terms of active student interaction.Opportunites for clubs, networking and collaborative activities could be improved.
The college comes under St tHomas School so the campus is not great it is compact and has a canteen.

Placement Experience:

I heard it from seniors that before lockdown it was pretty decent but after lockdown the company visits are not that much comapred to before lockdown.Cognizent, Accenture, Mindtree, PQ360 which is a startup company of our senior alumni etc. visits.

The students of the same batch are friendly and helpful.
The teacher's are friendly and helpful. They do provide helpful recommendations for the betterment of your future.

Dislikes

The seniors are overly harsh when it comes to 1st year.
The infrastructure could be worked on. The college lacks renovation.
The hostel does require everyday cleaning and renovation as well as the campus.

Placement Experience:

I don't know much about this but I guess from the sixth semester the students are eligible for campus placements. This year a student from AEIE got a package of 11.2 lacs per annum and the average is around 4 lacs per annum.

The Framework is said to be great, with well equipped classroom and simply get to the libraries.
The offices at this college are great. In any case, these changes depending on the quality of the companies going by the college and the victory of the internship changes by the internship.
Understudies appreciate the campus life and flexibility to associate with others understudies. However, there are few impediments such as the division of floors between senior and junior. College life is nice and could be an inviting place for others

Dislikes

The college doesn't have lodging, and understudies must organize their settlement locally.
The college doesn't have a big field to play like any other big college

Placement Experience:

In Syamaprasad College placements and internships are given to the final year students. And the companies that offer placements are Accenture, Deloitte, KPMG, etc. The highest package goes up to 20-24 lakhs and the average package goes to 6-8 lakhs. 70-80% of students get their placement in my college. At that time I planned to get the degree and apply to a multinational company with a high salary package with company facilities.

LIFE AT NIT DURGAPUR

I applied for multiple NITs During Josaa Counselling but my top 5 suitable choice according to my home location and considering other limiting factors was NIT Rourkela, NIT Silchar, NIT Durgapur, NIT Patna and IIEST Shibpur. Apart from these, I have also Applied for Calcutta University and Jadavpur University. I have got approval from NIT DGP,Calcutta University and Jadavpur University. But I have chosen NIT because of better Placement records and better campus Life. Moreover it's an Institution of of National Importance and Hold a good NIRF rank. So I preferred this choice above others. I wasn't rejected from the above colleges, but simply i didn't get the eligible rank for them. And the 3 which I got, i choosed the best among them. The Admission process of NIT DGP was through Josaa and CSAB counselling. The College and the Branch will be alloted to you according to your rank in the JEE MAINS Examination. The Closing rank of this exam in 2025 of General Category for the lowest Branch in BTech is 63387. The overall admission process for the college, apart from hostel allotment, was completely online. 14-15 documents were to be submitted in pdf format in the specific website provided. The Process was overall smooth and Well Managed....Read More

NIT DURGAPUR - A Detailed Breakdown

I applied for GURU GHASIDAS UNIVERSITY, BILASPUR (a GFTI in chattishgarh) and i got an secured seat in the CSE department too of that college too in my 2nd round of JOSAA councelling but in the CSAB round 1 i got a seat in NIT Durgapur in the Biotechnology department. I was a NEET aspirant but due to scam of NEET 2024 i was unable to get a good rank and secure a good government medical college and i was passionate about biology from my childhood so i chose Biotechnology and obviously an NIT is far more better than any GFTI be it in terms of placement, infrastructure, environment or any other things. I applied for some higher prioritized brances too in my choice filling but due to poor rank i wasn't able to secure a seat there. Students get seats in NIT(s), IIIT(s) and in GFTI (s) through JOSAA (a counselling process of 5 rounds) and CSAB (a counselling process of 2 rounds) and in IIT (s) through JOSAA counselling only. Students secure their desired seats based on their merits with the rank that they obtained in their JEE Mains exams and JEE ADVANCED (for IIT ) although admission is based on ranks but the authority have criterias like you have to score 75% marks in maths ,physics and chemistry in your Boards exams or you should be among top 20 percentile students of your class 12th board exams there is a separate process of admission too for the foreign students and NRI students althogh the fees structure is very high for their courses. The overall counselling process was good and seamless but after allotment of the college, the document verification and fees submission process is a little hectic....Read More
