Shoolini University Solan, Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication

Remarks

Eligibility: 10+2 with a minimum of 55% marks in any stream. The application form can be found on the official website of Shoolini, the last date to fill the application is by August and the fee of the application form at my time was 1800 Rs. The admission process is pretty simple, once you register through the website a mentor will connect with you and guide you throughout the process and then a basic entrance test of the University will be conducted and a personal interview with the faculty and done.

Course Curriculum Overview

3.5

The course curriculum is pretty good. We gain practical to theoretical experience both. And the Faculty is extremely amazing and supportive. The head of the Department is Mr Vipin Pubby, he was the editor of Indian express for 18 years and worked under it for 36 years. We learn a lot from him. Along with him, we have Ms Ranjana Thakur and Ms Indu Negi for theory and Radio. And other faculty members as well. Ms Ranjana Thakur is a gold medalist at MMC and a research journalist and builds the basic A, B, C's of journalism for students and Ms Indu Negi was a Radio Jockey in My FM. She handles the Radio and has taught students about how to record and edit their own shows. The exams are taken in a midterm and end term way. 2 times midterm and the end term is a final exam taken in December for even sem and may-June for odd sem. The exams are both theoretical as well as practical for journalism and are good.

Internships Opportunities

4

The students are given internships in various great media companies like Indian Express, Times of India, Amar Ujala, Hindustan Times, My FM, Ballebolly etc. These internships were without stipend and compulsory for the course curriculum. And various social projects are conducted from time to time, along with industrial visits and sprints.

Placement Experience

3.5

The rest of the placements start before their last sem, but for journalism students, it is in the last sem after 2 to 3 months. The companies that visit are Times of India, ICICI bank, Nestle etc. The highest package is of 15LPA and average is 6LPA. The University offers almost 100% placement. I plan on dropping for a year and maybe do a job after that masters.

Fees and Financial Aid

The fee is 50000 per annum now. And it is one of the most affordable colleges for Journalism and Mass Communication with proper learning opportunities. Scholarships are provided to students with good marks in 12th, for the single parents, sports quota etc. There are ample scholarship opportunities students can avail. And you can also work under various departments such as the Admission cell, Dean Students welfare office, hostel department with a stipend.

Campus Life

4.5

There are various fests, main is Interdeparrment competition which goes on for 3 days and is usually conducted between September to October. And Moksh is the grand event of the University. It takes place for 3 days and is usually conducted in March, where singers from outside are called and various events are conducted to decide Mr And Miss Moksh of the University. Other than this various functions are happening all the time and a lot of DJ nights too almost every week. The Yogananda Library at Shoolini University is one of the biggest libraries in the whole of Himachal where you can find any books, along with Kindle access and laptops for students who don't have it. Badminton is played the most by the students in the University, rest there are various sports competitions as well like Cricket, Table Tennis, Badminton, basketball, Chess, Carrom, wrestling, etc. There is a well equipped gymnasium too. There are various clubs headed by the students and for the students.

Hostel Facilities

4

The hostel service is pretty good here. Clean rooms, equipped with almirah, table and chair, bed, and shoe rack, shelves etc.,hot water available till 10 in the morning, laundry service is also included. The campus is clean, thus the hostels are also very clean. The food is prepared in a clean environment, but if you love spicy food I would advise you to bring your own Masalas. You get breakfast, lunch dinner and snacks in the evening. You can opt for the hostels during your visit also, but can also opt for it during admission process and they'll contact you regarding that. Hostels have 4-seater, 3 seater and 2 seater rooms available for you to choose. The fees of the hostels has increased a bit but the facilities are also increasing so if you're ready to pay 50-60k per semester, hostel is all yours. If you want to rent a pg or room there are various available near the University itself which you'll have to come and find as per your suitability.

Interview Experience

4.5

I just had a Personal Interview at my time which was pretty simple, we talked about my state and why I chose Journalism, my mentor, and other basic questions. After that we recorded a small introductory Radio show.

Placement Experience:

The placement opportunities at my college are average. A few reputed companies visit the campus each year, but the number of offers and salary packages varies depending on the branch and market conditions. Students who have strong academic performance, technical skills, internships, and good communication skills generally have better chances of getting placed.
