Planning to take admission into an undergraduate degree at the University of Edinburgh? Just follow these simple steps to get into your dream university:

Step 1: Know the type of entry requirements

Before applying for the program of your choice, it is highly essential that you make a note of the type of entry requirements you may encounter as you glance through different programs. The basic requirements to seek admission at the University of Edinburgh include academic qualifications, statement of purpose, reference letters and proof of English language proficiency.

However, for a specific type of program, one may have to appear for an admission interview, an admission test, submit a portfolio or proof of work experience. The type of entry requirements that you may encounter for entry into the University of Edinburgh are:

  • Standard Entry Requirements: These primarily comprise of the specific grades that one needs to have to be part of the selection process.
  • Minimum Entry Requirements: These refer to the program-wise entry requirements and comprise of the standard entry requirements too.
  • Required Subjects: For a few of the programs, students will be expected to have completed the previous education in specific subjects only.
  • Preferred Subjects: A few of the entry requirements may indicate a few preferred subjects. Although these subjects are not compulsory for entry into a specific program but will surely affect the preference of an applicant during the process of selection.
  • Recommended Subjects: These subjects are not important for gaining entry into a program but their completion can definitely help a student develop better understanding of the preferred subject.

Step 2: Apply for admission to the University of Edinburgh

Application Portal: In order to apply for admission into undergraduate programs at the University of Edinburgh, one needs to make an online application through UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. Using UCAS you will be able to apply for admission into five degree programs at one of the universities in the UK.

Application Fee:  For a single choice of program, you will be charged a UCAS fee of 20 GBP while for more number of choices (maximum 5), and applications submitted after June 30, an application fee of 25 GBP is charged.

Step 3:  Upload the required documents

You need to keep the following documents handy while making your application:

  • Proof of previous education qualifications.
  • Grades acquired or predicted grades if the applicant is yet to complete the qualification.
  • English proficiency proof for students hailing from non-English speaking countries.
  • A personal statement wherein the applicant needs to state the reason for choosing a particular program, showcase a clear understanding of the chosen subject, a list of competencies of the applicant and explain how the program will help in realising the career objectives.
  • Reference letter: Applicants need to get a reference letter from one of their teachers who taught them in high school and is well aware of the academic and other accomplishments of the student. 
  • Other supporting documents: International students need to submit a copy of bank statement and a copy of their passport while making an application and upon acceptance, need to submit a copy of their health insurance and a copy of student visa.

Students must submit a complete application only which comprises of the required application fee and the documents mentioned above.

Visa Process for International Students

  • Students who are non-EU/EEA must have a student visa to study in any university based in the UK.
  • If you wish to choose a program that lasts for 6 months or more, you must apply for a Tier-4 visa in your home country before traveling. If it’s a program for less than 6 months, you can apply to the UK as a short term student.
  • Applicants are required to provide the following documents to receive the Tier 4 visa as a part of the visa process:
    • Copy of valid passport
    • Proof of financial support
    • One passport size photo that meets UKVI requirements.
    • Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
    • Evidence of English Language proficiency.
    • Evidence of qualifications.
    • Translations.
  • Complete an online application with an application fee.
  • Applicants are then required to attend the nearest visa application center.
  • Post your documents to the embassy once the confirmation is given.
