London Business School PhD Scholarships

Every admitted PhD student at LBS receives a fully funded package. Indian applicants pay nothing out of pocket for tuition and receive a tax-free stipend covering London living costs. The funding runs for five years, matching the standard PhD duration.

Element Coverage (2026 entry) Coverage (2027 entry) Notes
Tuition fee waiver 100 percent 100 percent Contingent on satisfactory annual progress
Annual tax-free stipend £32,154 (INR 41.21 Lakhs) £33,762 (INR 43.27 Lakhs) Paid monthly; five-year support
Conference and research funding Yes Yes Specialist and international travel supported
Teaching / research assistant work Paid, capped at 160 hours a year Paid, capped at 160 hours a year Waived in Year 1 and job-market year

Doctoral subjects include Accounting, Economics, Finance, Management Science and Organisational Behaviour. Applications for the September 2027 cohort open in late summer 2026, with a tentative December 15, 2026 primary deadline. Indian candidates aiming for Finance or Economics streams should target a strong GRE score alongside a research writing sample.

Reddit Insight: Recent Indian PhD admits confirm the £32,154 stipend fully covers a shared flat in Zone 2 London plus modest travel; recipients rarely need outside teaching income until Year 3 when the stipend uplift is optional.

External Government Scholarships

Two UK government awards regularly fund Indian LBS students. Both operate on annual cycles running roughly a year ahead of intake. Sequencing them against LBS deadlines is the single biggest lever on your total funding stack.

The £22,000 Chevening MBA cap leaves a £101,950 (INR 130.67 Lakhs) shortfall against LBS tuition. Stacking Chevening with the LBS Fund Scholarships or the Ajay Arora Scholarship closes most of that gap. Chevening does not permit deferrals, so align the award year with the intake you actually plan to join.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. When should Indian candidates apply to be seriously considered for London Business School scholarships?

Ans. Round 1 is the sweet spot. For the August 2027 MBA intake, that means a tentative September 4, 2026 submission with decisions by December 2026. The LBS Fund pool is largest in Round 1, thins in Round 2, and is nearly gone by Round 3. Chevening runs a parallel October 6, 2026 deadline for the 2027-28 UK cycle.

Ques. How does the Ajay Arora Scholarship for Indian Students actually work?

Ans. Every admitted Indian MBA candidate is reviewed automatically for the £50,000 (INR 64.09 Lakhs) Ajay Arora award. One winner is picked each year. Selection weights leadership evidence, post-MBA India linkage in career essays, and interview performance. No additional form is required; strong Round 1 or Round 2 candidates have the best odds because the committee reviews the full applicant pool before deciding.

Ques. What GMAT score and work experience make an Indian applicant competitive for LBS awards?

Ans. The LBS MBA class averages a GMAT of 708 with 5 years of work experience. Indian applicants targeting the Ajay Arora, LBS India or BK Birla slot typically post 730 or higher on the GMAT and 4-8 years of post-graduation experience. For MiM merit awards, a first-class bachelor’s degree with a competitive GMAT or GRE score is usually enough.

Ques. Do London Business School scholarships cover the cost of living in London?

Ans. Only the BK Birla Programme, Laidlaw Fund and PhD funding are large enough to indirectly cover London living costs. Ajay Arora, LBS India Scholarship and Mark Le Goy are tuition-only awards. Chevening and Commonwealth do bundle a £1,690 (INR 2.17 Lakhs) monthly London stipend covering rent, food and transport. Plan a separate INR 25 to 30 Lakhs annual living budget if your award is tuition-only.

Scholarship

No, I didn't receive any scholarships during my MBA. There is no separate application required for most scholarships except some women-specific ones for which you will have to apply once you get the admit.

Diversity: 90%+ class is international, I am experiencing the diversity of thoughts during classroom discussions, which is good for having different perspectives.Location of school: London is a hub of various start-ups and top tier employers. One has plenty of opportunities for internships and part-time projects during the term as well, which is an added benefit. The flexibility of the program: I can choose to exit in 15, 18, or 21 months, and tailor my electives, core courses, and exchange based on my choice/preferences.
