University of Reading Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

University of Reading admission requirements for Indian applicants combine academic thresholds, an English proficiency test, and credential verification through a recognised assessor.

Postgraduate Requirements

  • Academic: Bachelor’s degree with 50% to 85% or CGPA 6.0 to 8.5 out of 10, depending on programme and Band A or Band B institution classification
  • English proficiency: IELTS 6.5 overall with 5.5 in each component, or TOEFL iBT 88, or PTE Academic 69, or Duolingo 125
  • Credential verification: WES or Ecctis Statement of Comparability accepted for degree recognition
  • MBA specific: Bachelor’s plus three years managerial experience; IELTS 7.0 overall with 6.0 in each band

Undergraduate Requirements

  • Academic: Class 12 with 70% to 83% depending on the course and awarding board
  • English proficiency: IELTS 6.5 overall with 5.5 in each, or TOEFL iBT 88, or PTE 69, or Duolingo 125

Key insight: Reading waives the IELTS requirement for Indian applicants who scored 70% in Class 12 English (CBSE or ICSE) or 75% in state boards. Confirm eligibility on the university’s English language requirements page before booking a test.

University of Reading Acceptance Rate 2027

University of Reading acceptance rate sits at 20% to 30% (estimated) for international applicants across postgraduate taught programmes. The university does not publish an official institution-wide acceptance figure, so the range reflects third-party admissions data and cohort observations.

Reading operates on a rolling admissions cycle, so early submissions typically face lower selectivity than late-cycle applications. Selectivity varies noticeably by school, with Henley Business School programmes and MSc Data Science running tighter than most humanities and social science courses.

Reality check: Indian applicants who meet the published academic threshold with a valid English test and complete credential verification convert at higher rates. Apply by March for the September intake to sit inside the earlier decision window.

Reading stands out for its Henley Business School heritage and top-tier Real Estate and Planning department. The two-campus split gives Indian applicants access to executive-style teaching at Greenlands alongside a traditional research campus at Whiteknights.

University of Reading suits Indian applicants targeting a mid-cost UK master’s inside the top-200 QS band. Total investment of ₹42 to ₹49 lakh for a one-year master’s returns a UK market median starting salary between ₹30 and ₹36 lakh, backed by two years of Graduate Route work rights. The Henley Business School network is the single strongest India-facing advantage.

Reading is a weaker fit for applicants set on a top-100 world rank or a central London campus lifestyle. Candidates prioritising those factors should also weigh Queen Mary University of London.

University of Reading FAQs

Ques. Does University of Reading accept a 15-year education for master’s admission?

Ans. Reading accepts Indian three-year bachelor’s degrees from UGC-recognised universities for entry to most postgraduate taught programmes. Applicants from Band A institutions typically need 55% or CGPA 5.5 out of 10; Band B institutions need 60% or CGPA 6.0. A small number of programmes require a four-year bachelor’s, so verify the requirement on the programme’s admissions page before applying.

Ques. What is the IELTS waiver criteria at Reading University?

Ans. Reading waives IELTS for Indian applicants who scored at least 70% in Class 12 English from CBSE or ICSE, or 75% in Class 12 English from a state board. Applicants must submit their official Class 12 marksheet as proof at application. The waiver applies to most programmes but not to the MBA or courses that publish a higher English requirement.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at Reading University?

Ans. Student visa holders on a full-time degree at Reading can work up to 20 hours per week during term time. Full-time work is permitted during official university vacations. The Careers team lists on-campus roles and part-time openings across Reading town. Indian students often work in retail, hospitality, and university-run positions such as student ambassador and library assistant.

Ques. What is the application fee for University of Reading?

Ans. Reading does not charge an application fee for postgraduate applications submitted through its RISIS portal. Undergraduate applications go through UCAS, which charges a system fee of £29.50 for the 2027 cycle. The MBA at Henley Business School also carries no separate application fee for Indian applicants.

Ques. Which Indian banks recognise Reading for education loans?

Ans. Reading appears on the approved-institution lists of major Indian public and private lenders, including State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, and ICICI Bank. Non-collateral loans are commonly offered up to ₹40 lakh for master’s applicants; larger loans require collateral. Verify the current loan cap and interest rate directly with the lender before accepting an offer.

Ques. How does Reading verify Indian academic transcripts?

Ans. Reading accepts transcripts issued directly by the awarding university, either as sealed hard copies or through a verified electronic transcript service. WES and Ecctis Statements of Comparability are accepted where the admissions team needs a formal degree recognition check. Applicants should begin verification six to eight weeks before submission to avoid timing issues at offer stage.

Ques. Does Reading University issue conditional offers to Indian applicants?

Ans. Reading issues conditional offers to Indian applicants pending final academic results, English test scores, or credential verification. Common conditions include achieving the specified degree class in the final year, meeting the IELTS component minima, and submitting a WES evaluation. Applicants must clear all conditions before the deposit deadline to convert the conditional offer into an unconditional one.

Ques. What is the tuition deposit and refund policy at Reading?

Ans. Reading asks for a £2,000 tuition deposit within six weeks of an unconditional offer to secure the place. The deposit is refundable in full only where the university refuses a CAS letter or the applicant’s UK student visa is refused with documented reason. Withdrawals for other reasons attract full or partial forfeiture as per the published deposit terms.

  • The three campuses of the University of Reading are Greenlands (Henley-on-Thames), London Road (Reading), and Whiteknights (main, Reading). Whiteknights has a health centre, gym, sports park, and a sizable library.
  • Society fairs and Welcome Week are popular occasions. Numerous clubs address academics, volunteer work, sports, and culture. We had an international food market on campus every Thursday

Fees

  • The Tuition fee for an international student is £22,350.
  • I was offered a £5000 scholarship for merit.
  • Accommodation on-campus- £6000 including a food meal plan.
  • My monthly expenses were less as my accommodation covered food and bills as well. I used to spend a maximum of £ 200 for shopping, food, and travel. The university always supported financially in case support was needed.

  • All the facilities are really great and state-of-the-art. There are two campus locations in Reading, London Road and Whiteknights, with Whiteknights being the bigger and more beautiful one.
  • There are plenty of clubs, pubs, and cafes both on and off campus, with great social life and entertainment options nearby. The sports complex is huge and has multiple sports venues. There is a big central Library as well on the Whiteknights campus with an extensive collection and support staff.

Fees

  • For PhD, the international fees are 22000 GBP per annum, which is covered by my scholarship.

  • The Reading University Students Union organised most events, fests and extracurricular activities on campus. My department also planned events during the beginning of each term and also provided opportunities to connect with fellow students and faculty.
  • Extracurricular events also were modelled on skill enhancement, which contributed towards CV building.

Fees

  • It cost me around 15 lakhs for tuition fees. I had also opted for on-campus accommodation, which was charged. The accommodation included catering for almost one full year, barring the last 4 weeks or so. The tuition fee was charged at the beginning; however, the accommodation rent could be paid on a weekly/monthly basis. Reading town has most of the things needed for regular day-to-day use.

  • All the facilities were provided. No shortage of anything. Notably, the meal plans for students who wish to have the university's food can also have it at a subsidized cost. There are several clubs in university and one can join as many as one wishes. Every wednesday there is a University club if one wants to get some exposure and speak about one's interests and talk to others.

    2. My room rent for the entire year was 10,600 British pounds.
    3. For Transportation, one can take an all day bus pass for 3.5 pounds. Rest there were cabs and trains as well. Like from Reading to London, the train fare was 20 to 25 pounds.

  • The room rent was paid in 4 installments. I used to get my allowance in four installment as well so that's how I used to pay that.
