Anglia Ruskin University PhD Scholarships

External Government Scholarships at Anglia Ruskin University
Indian applicants heading to Leicester commonly layer a UK government or Indian foundation award on top of the tuition offer. Full-value external awards cover tuition, living costs, and airfare, often taking total funding.
| Scholarship | Value / Coverage | Eligibility for Indian Applicants | Deadline (Next Cycle) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chevening Scholarship | Fully funded: tuition fees, monthly stipend, return airfare and other allowances | Yes. Indian citizens are eligible, subject to Chevening's academic, work experience and other requirements |
6 October 2026 |
| Commonwealth Shared Scholarship | Full tuition, living allowance, airfare and applicable allowances | Yes. India is an eligible country. Available for selected one-year full-time Master's courses at participating UK universities |

Indian passport holders resident in India can apply if they meet the academic and admission requirements. Business and Finance, Computer Science, Engineering and Management/MBA are excluded, subject to the stated exceptions |

Chevening and Commonwealth are the two full-funding routes Indian students target when the ARU direct scholarships alone do not close the gap. Chevening favours candidates with clear leadership impact and two years of work experience; Commonwealth is means-tested and needs an upper-second undergraduate degree at minimum.
Both awards are held at ARU only if the applicant lists an ARU course on the funder’s application. Chevening applicants must eventually hold offers from three UK universities before final selection. Commonwealth candidates are placed by CSC in partnership with the host institution.
Applications open before the ARU intake year that they fund, so a September 2027 start requires a Chevening or Commonwealth application submitted in October or November 2026. Late applicants miss the whole cycle and must wait a full year for the next one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Ques. What is the highest funding an Indian student can stack at Anglia Ruskin University?
Ans. The highest single stack for an Indian student is a full Chevening or Commonwealth Master’s award. Either covers tuition, a monthly stipend, and airfare, adding up to roughly INR 38.46 Lakhs or more per year at the current rate. Direct ARU stacks cap at £4,000 (INR 5.13 Lakhs) total in Year 1, since the GREAT Scholarship of £10,000 cannot combine with any other ARU award.
Ques. Do I need to apply separately for the automatic ARU scholarships?
Ans. No. The International UG Scholarship, International PG Scholarship, MBA Bursary, and Full Payment Discount all apply automatically once the offer is firm and any conditions are met. Only the GREAT Scholarship, Chevening, and Commonwealth Master’s require a separate application through the funder’s portal.
Ques. What academic threshold triggers the higher £4,000 tier of the International Postgraduate Scholarship?
Ans. Anglia Ruskin University reserves the top £4,000 tier for candidates who exceed the minimum entry requirement. For Indian applicants that usually means a first-class bachelor’s or a 65%+ aggregate in the qualifying degree, depending on the subject. ARU has not published a public tier table below £4,000, so a lower automatic amount is possible for those who only meet the threshold.

Scholarship
I got a scholarship of £2000. It was a general scholarship awarded to some candidates with deserving SoPs.
Location was a key factor. I wanted to study in Cambridge because there are a large number of students from all over the world in Cambridge. The diverse environment, along with extremely professional University staff helped allowed me to have the best possible university life for the past three years.
It was one of those closer to home but still with a good reputation and offering the course I wanted. The entry requirements also fit my A level results and the people at the open day seemed nice. The course was selected through clearing.
