University College London Admission Eligibility for Indian Students

UCL sorts Indian institutions into two tiers when assessing bachelor’s degrees, and it publishes a five-subject Class XII benchmark for direct undergraduate entry. The academic thresholds below apply to Indian applicants specifically, and each course adds its own subject prerequisites on top.

Undergraduate direct entry (CBSE and ISC): UCL asks for five Class XII subjects at 90, 85, 85, 85, 85%. Where an A-level A* is required, the equivalent Class XII score is 95%, and where an A is required, the equivalent is 90%. From 2025, UCL accepts only four state boards for direct entry: Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Applicants without any accepted Class XII qualification may enter through UCL’s Undergraduate Preparatory Certificate, its own foundation year that admits students who complete it into UCL degrees.

  • UG general entry: Class XII 90-85% across five subjects.
  • PG Category 1 (IITs, NITs, NLUs, NIRF Top 100): 65% or CGPA 7.5/10 for a UK 2:1.
  • PG Category 2 (all other Indian institutions): 65% or CGPA 8.0/10 for a UK 2:1.
  • English tests accepted: IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic.

UCL publishes five English proficiency levels, and each master’s programme is assigned one. Level 1 requires IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 per component. Level 2 requires IELTS 7.0 overall with 6.5 per component. Level 3 requires 7.0 with 7.0 per component. Level 4 requires 7.5 overall with 7.0 per component. Level 5 requires 8.0 with 8.0 per component. TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic equivalents rise on the same ladder.

University College London Postgraduate Programs and Fees

UCL taught master’s programmes run one calendar year full-time, and overseas tuition for 2026/27 sits between £26,200 (₹33.33 Lakhs) at the low end and £57,700 (₹73.41 Lakhs) at the top. Fees below are the 2026/27 base tuition per academic year, and the 2027/28 figures are typically published in November 2026. This article covers base tuition only, and the course-wise fees breakdown holds cost of attendance and per-programme detail.

University College London Undergraduate Programs and Fees

UCL undergraduate degrees run three years for most subjects and four years for the MEng, Architecture MArch integrated route and modern language degrees. University College London Application Process for Indian Students

UCL runs two separate application channels for Indian students. Undergraduate applicants apply through UCAS, and postgraduate applicants apply through UCL’s own admissions portal. The steps below cover both routes from account creation to final decision.

  1. Choose your programme and confirm entry requirements on UCL’s prospectus page for your chosen course.
  2. UG applicants create a UCAS account, add UCL institution code L72, add course codes for up to five choices, complete the personal statement and reference, then pay the UCAS fee.
  3. PG applicants register on the UCL Admissions Portal and start the application for their chosen course. Pay the application fee of £90 (₹11,451), or £160 (₹20,357) for Business Analytics, Finance, Management, or Project & Enterprise Management MSc, on the UCL Admissions Portal.
  4. Upload transcripts, degree certificate, English test score (if not waived), CV, personal statement and two academic references.
  5. Complete any subject-specific test: TMUA for BSc Economics, LNAT for LLB Law, UCAT for Medicine, GRE Quantitative for MSc Economics or MSc Finance.
  6. Submit before your programme’s deadline and monitor UCAS Track (UG) or the UCL portal (PG) for decision updates.
  7. Accept the offer, pay the required tuition deposit (10% of first-year fee for overseas offer-holders), then apply for the UK Student visa.

University College London Admission Decisions and Offer Timeline

UCL sends decisions through UCAS Hub for undergraduate applications and through the UCL Admissions Portal for postgraduate applications. Postgraduate offers usually arrive within eight to 12 weeks of a complete submission, and undergraduate decisions land between February and end-March for on-time UCAS applications.

  • PG staged responses: MSc Business Analytics publishes fixed staged decisions, so applications complete by 8 December 2026 typically receive responses by 9 February 2027.
  • Conditional offers are common and specify grade or degree conditions to meet before enrolment.
  • Reply deadline: UG offers must be firmed via UCAS by the UCAS-set deadline (usually early June for main cycle applicants).
  • Deferral: UCL allows postgraduate offer deferrals of up to 12 months at the department’s discretion, applied for after accepting the offer.
  • Tuition fee deposit: Overseas offer-holders pay 10% of first-year fee within four weeks of accepting.

University College London Documents Required for Indian Applicants

UCL uploads happen inside the UCAS platform for undergraduate applications and the UCL Admissions Portal for postgraduate applications. Every document must be a clear scan in English or an officially translated copy. Original certified copies are checked at enrolment.

  • Passport bio page (valid for the full course duration plus six months).
  • Class X and Class XII marksheets and pass certificates (UG applicants).
  • Bachelor’s degree consolidated marksheet plus provisional or final degree certificate (PG applicants).
  • Personal statement (UG through UCAS) or programme-specific statement of purpose (PG).
  • Two academic references, uploaded by referees directly on request from UCL or UCAS.
  • CV or resume (PG applicants, tailored to the programme’s academic focus).
  • English test score report from IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, CAE or CPE, unless a documented waiver applies.
  • Portfolio for Architecture and Slade School of Fine Art applicants, submitted when invited.
  • Subject test results: TMUA (BSc Economics), LNAT (LLB Law), UCAT (Medicine), GRE Quantitative (MSc Economics, encouraged for MSc Finance).
  • Work-experience letters for MArch Architecture and any programme with a professional experience clause.
  • Financial proof and sponsor letter for the CAS and visa stage after offer acceptance.

University College London Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

UCL does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate, but UCAS-derived data from the recent undergraduate cycle shows around 89,239 applications, 38,696 offers issued and 9,138 enrolments. This gives an offer rate of about 43% and a final enrolment rate of roughly 23%. Postgraduate acceptance is not centrally reported and varies sharply by course. Compare intake behaviour across cohorts on the detailed acceptance rate patterns page.

How is University College London Selectivity Distributed?

Faculty acceptance rates range from about 28% in Engineering Sciences to over 60% in Arts and Humanities. Highly competitive undergraduate programmes like Medicine, Economics and Computer Science convert at well under 20%, while several arts and language degrees convert above 60%. Selectivity is course-specific rather than uniform across UCL.

What Does University College London Ask From Indian Applicants?

Indian applicants who clear the published academic bar (five Class XII subjects at 90% plus, or a 2:1 Bachelor’s from a Category 1 institution at 65%) sit inside the competitive band. Beyond marks, subject test results, personal statement quality and academic references distinguish accepted from rejected profiles, especially for the MSc Computer Science and MSc Data Science pipelines.

Insider note: Indian offer-holders at UCL typically show scores above the published minimum. MSc Computer Science, MSc Machine Learning and MSc Finance regularly draw 70%-plus bachelor’s averages from Category 1 institutions, so pushing above the stated 65% floor materially improves the odds.

UCL admissions for Indian students now centre on the September 2027 intake. UG applications open on UCAS in September 2026 and close on 13 January 2027, while PG applications open around 20 October 2026 with a £90 (₹11,451) fee and rolling deadlines through 2027.

University College London Admissions: Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. What is UCL’s acceptance rate for Indian students?

Ans. UCL does not publish an official acceptance rate. UCAS-derived data suggests an offer rate around 43% and a final enrolment rate around 23% for undergraduate applicants. Faculty variation is significant, from about 28% in Engineering to over 60% in Arts and Humanities.

Ques. Does UCL require GRE or GMAT for master’s programmes?

Ans. MSc Economics requires a GRE Quantitative score of 162 or above. MSc Finance strongly encourages a competitive GRE (Q 162+) or GMAT score, though it is not mandatory. Most other UCL master’s programmes do not require GRE or GMAT. Confirm on the specific course page before applying.

Ques. How long does UCL take to send admission decisions?

Ans. Postgraduate decisions usually arrive within eight to 12 weeks of a complete application. Some courses like MSc Business Analytics publish staged response dates: applications complete by 8 December 2026 receive responses by 9 February 2027. Undergraduate decisions come through UCAS between February and end-March for on-time applicants.

Ques. What tuition deposit does UCL charge after an offer?

Ans. Overseas offer-holders pay 10% of the first-year tuition fee within four weeks of accepting the offer. For a £42,700 (₹54.33 Lakhs) course, that is £4,270 (₹5.43 Lakhs). This deposit secures your CAS letter, which is required for the UK Student visa application.

Ques. Can Indian students apply to UCL through the January 2027 UCAS deadline for undergraduate courses?

Ans. Yes. Indian undergraduate applicants must submit their UCAS application by 18:00 UK time (23:30 IST) on 13 January 2027 for guaranteed consideration for September 2027 entry. Medicine (MBBS) has an earlier deadline of 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time. Applications are not accepted after the deadline for competitive courses.

  • I received a scholarship of £5000. Some of my friends received scholarships of £13300. It depends upon your undergraduate score. If percentage are between 55-60 it is £3000, between 60-70% it is £5000 and above 70% - it is £8300.
  • If the percentage is more than 75%, then it's £13300. Many students of my batch got scholarships; around 15-20 Indian students got them.

Scholarship

  • I received an external scholarship: the Tata Endowment Loan Scholarship. The eligibility criteria are being an Indian citizen applying for a full-time postgraduate course or PhD abroad, having a good academic record in their previous degree and certificates for extracurricular and co-curricular activities, already having an offer of admission from the respective university abroad and having two referrals.
  • 10 lakh rupees (INR)
  • I am not aware of that.
  • Approximately 80 Indian students receive this scholarship and the typical award amount ranges from 4 lakh to 10 lakh based on academic merit through the screening processes.

Scholarship

  • I did not receive any scholarships, and I’m not aware about the scholarships because I was accepted late and all the scholarship deadlines passed.
  • But there are options of scholarship on the portal, some provided by UCL and some by external sources, such as the Common Wealth Scholarship, which is very famous and tough to get.

Scholarship

  • Yes, there are many scholarships from UCL as well as in general to study in UK. You just have to look from the very beginning for the scholarship. Some scholarships have deadlines before the year of the start of the course. So Start searching for scholarships from a year before you want to take admission.
  • UCL itself has scholarships especially for Indian students. I don't know the exact number of students who get the scholarship. But there are 4-5 students who received it in my course itself.
