  • PG academic: Bachelor’s degree with 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 (recommended) from a recognised Indian university; competitive programmes may ask for 60% or CGPA 6/10.
  • UG academic: Class 12 with 65% to 80% (recommended) depending on programme, with Maths and Physics compulsory for engineering.
  • English requirement: IELTS 6.0 or 6.5 overall with no band below 5.5 (verify at the official Portsmouth English language page); TOEFL, PTE Academic, Duolingo English Test, and university pre-sessional routes are also accepted.
  • Document check: WES or UK ENIC credential evaluation for non-standard transcripts.

Key insight: Portsmouth University waives the IELTS requirement for Indian applicants whose Class 12 English marks exceed 70% from CBSE, ICSE, or state boards recognised by the university, subject to programme approval.

University of Portsmouth Acceptance Rate 2027

The University of Portsmouth acceptance rate for Indian applicants sits at 70% (estimated) across taught masters, reflecting an open admissions posture typical of post-1992 UK universities. No official institution-wide acceptance rate is published, so this figure is derived from third-party admissions data.

YearAcceptance RateTrend
2027 (est.)70% (estimated)Stable
2026 (est.)70% (estimated)Stable
2025 (est.)72% (estimated)Slight tightening

Highly ranked programmes such as MSc Cyber Security and the Strategic Leadership MBA use tighter thresholds. Indian applicants with 60% or above at bachelor’s level and clean English scores clear admission comfortably.

Reality check: A 70% acceptance rate does not mean an automatic offer, since Portsmouth University screens for genuine student intent and programme-fit statements, and rejects incomplete or generic SOPs even from academically strong Indian applicants.

University of Portsmouth vs Peer Universities

The peer set below compares Portsmouth University with same-tier UK post-92 and modern universities that Indian applicants shortlist alongside it.

UniversityQS World 2027Collegedunia Study Abroad UK 2026Avg Annual PG Fee (GBP / ₹ lakh)Differentiator
University of Portsmouth#662#66 of 12718,500 / 19.98 lakh (estimated)Affordable coastal city with rolling intakes.

University of Southampton#80NA28,900 / 31.21 lakh (estimated)Russell Group research intensity.

Portsmouth University wins on affordability and three-intake flexibility, while Southampton pulls ahead on global rank for applicants who can pay the Russell Group premium. Against Bournemouth, Brighton, and Plymouth, Portsmouth offers the strongest QS World position in the group.

Portsmouth University fits Indian applicants targeting a UK masters at total investment under ₹35 lakh, aiming for Graduate Route work rights, and comfortable with a mid-QS-band brand recognised by UK employers and Indian recruiters running QS Top 1000 filters. Median starting salaries of GBP 24,000 to 28,000 translate to a 4 to 5 year payback on the full investment for cyber security and data analytics graduates.

Portsmouth University is not the right fit for Indian applicants who need a Russell Group or QS Top 200 brand for consulting, banking, or PhD ambitions. A realistic alternative in the same cost band is the University of Plymouth for marine and applied-science routes.

  • Life at my university is vibrant and varied, with plenty of things to take part in beyond academics. There are over 140 clubs (I believe) and societies you can join through the Students’ Union, ranging from sports teams like badminton to cultural societies such as the Hindu society.
  • These societies do regular meet-ups, workshops, socials, and activities throughout the year, which makes it easier to make friends and get involved.
  • The university library is a well-equipped space for study and group work with lots of seating and resources. For sports and fitness, the Ravelin Sports Centre is impressive, with a large gym, pool, climbing wall, and courts. There’s also a second sports site with pitches, tennis courts, and team sports courts.

  • The University of Portsmouth celebrates Indian festivals such as Holi and Diwali, providing cultural events that include activities like color runs for Holi and vibrant Diwali night celebrations with traditional music, dance, and festive meals.
  • These events foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for students to experience and participate in Indian cultural traditions.

Overview

I had less percentage in my bachelor's, so I had to clear the pathway program to start my actual course. So I completed my pre masters which lasted for 3 months. Overall, the University is good. They have their name in UK markets. The value of UOP graduates is higher compared to other average universities.

The library is one of the best places at the University where I spend most of my time. There are many activities in the campus, and they ask students to involve themselves in these but the journey for international students is not easy as an international student I have to balance my student and personal life. I have to earn so that I can manage my daily expenses i.e. rent, food, stationeries, etc. so if you don't have a tension to earn money, your parents are rich enough then you get plenty of time to invest your time in extracurricular activities in the University.

Overview

I already have a masters in Education from back in India & have also read the papers of my professors, that was my main encouragement to interact with such intellectual people. I wanted to do a specialized master's program further so chose MSc Educational Leadership and Management which was my elective subject earlier and was one of my top-scoring subjects as well.

There are many societies. I have personally joined the Indian society and the book club. The library is open 24 hours during the term time, which is really helpful. The EduRoam WiFi works almost everywhere. It is a surreal experience.

Overview

I chose this university because of multiple factors and for me the most important factor was the course modules and curriculum since I had worked in the corporate field in India and I found this course very much in line with my future goals.

Well, university is very much concerned about all these facilities and they take a lot of initiatives to seek attention from the students, there are many good communities built for students to help them adapt to the changes.

Campus life is amazing, the Library has any book you can think of and if it isn't already there, thw university is happy to buy or loan it from somewhere else for its students. There are student gyms, union, clubs, societies, research departments that students can get involved in.
