GGSIPU Ph.D FAQs

Ques. Who is exempt from the GGSIPU PET and what is the selection process for them?

Ans. Candidates who hold valid UGC-NET (including JRF), CSIR-NET (including JRF), GATE, or CEED qualifications are exempt from the GGSIPU PET. For NET Category 2 and Category 3 holders, final selection is based on 70% NET score and 30% interview. GATE and CEED holders proceed directly to the interview stage. Exempted candidates must submit qualifying documents by the official deadline, which was 15 April 2026 for the 2026 admission cycle.

Ques. What is the GGSIPU PET format and how is it different from UGC-NET?

Ans. The GGSIPU PET is a 2-hour offline OMR test with 100 MCQs, each carrying 4 marks, with no negative marking. The paper has 50% research methodology questions common to all disciplines, and 50% subject-specific questions. UGC-NET is a national exam with two papers and negative marking, used for JRF and assistant professor eligibility. Clearing GGSIPU PET qualifies a candidate only for GGSIPU PhD admission and does not carry the national-level recognition of UGC-NET.

Ques. What monthly stipend does a JRF holder receive when admitted to GGSIPU PhD?

Ans. UGC JRF holders receive INR 37,000 per month for the first 2 years of doctoral study. After a satisfactory research progress review at Year 2, the fellowship upgrades to Senior Research Fellowship at INR 42,000 per month for Years 3 to 5. CSIR-NET JRF holders in science disciplines receive the same rates. GATE-admitted GGSIPU PhD scholars receive INR 12,400 per month under the AICTE stipend scheme, which is lower than the JRF rate but still meaningful financial support.

Ques. How many disciplines does GGSIPU offer for PhD and which are the most competitive?

Ans. GGSIPU offers PhD in 62 plus disciplines spanning engineering, basic sciences, medical sciences, pharmacy, law, management, education, architecture, mass communication, and humanities. Disciplines with higher applicant demand include Computer Science and Engineering, Biotechnology, Management Studies, and Law. Medical science disciplines such as Radio-Diagnosis and Neurology have fewer seats and are tied to specific affiliated medical colleges, making them inherently more competitive.

Ques. What is the minimum and typical duration for a GGSIPU PhD programme?

Ans. The minimum duration for a GGSIPU PhD is 3 years per UGC Regulations 2022. Typical completion is 4 to 5 years depending on research area and thesis review timelines. The first two semesters involve mandatory coursework before full-time thesis work begins. Scholars who complete within 3 years may submit the thesis, but extensions beyond 5 years require formal university approval and additional fee payment.
