Delhi University PhD FAQs
Ques. Can candidates with a NET-JRF qualification skip the CUET-PhD entrance test at DU?
Ans. Yes. Candidates who hold a valid UGC-JRF or CSIR-JRF award are exempted from the CUET-PhD written test. However, they are not automatically admitted. They must still register on the DU PhD portal during the admission cycle and clear the departmental interview conducted by the Research Advisory Committee of their chosen department. A JRF exemption only bypasses the written entrance test, not the overall selection process.
Ques. What is the CUET-PhD exam pattern for DU admissions?
Ans. The CUET-PhD entrance test is conducted by NTA and is a 2-hour computer-based test. It has two equal sections: 50% of questions test research aptitude and methodology (covering research design, statistical reasoning, and academic writing concepts), and the remaining 50% test subject-specific knowledge in the candidate’s discipline. A minimum score of 50% is required to qualify the test. Candidates then proceed to the departmental interview round.
Ques. How many PhD disciplines does Delhi University offer and which are the most research-active?
Ans. DU offers PhD in over 82 disciplines spanning sciences, humanities, social sciences, law, medicine, and applied technology. The most research-active departments in terms of funded projects and publications include Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Economics, History, and the Interdisciplinary Research Centre. DU’s Faculty of Medical Sciences, which includes AIIMS-affiliated research components, also produces significant PhD research output. Students should check department-wise supervisor availability before applying.
Ques. Is a DU PhD degree accepted for faculty recruitment at NITs and IITs?
Ans. Yes. A PhD from Delhi University is recognized by AICTE and UGC and is accepted for faculty recruitment at NITs, IITs, and central universities in India. DU holds NAAC A++ accreditation and is listed as an Institute of Eminence, which strengthens the credential. For faculty positions at IITs specifically, publications and research impact matter more than the awarding institution, so a strong thesis with journal publications from DU carries significant weight.
Ques. What happens if a DU PhD student’s supervisor changes or leaves mid-research?
Ans. DU has a formal co-supervisor provision and a Research Advisory Committee structure for each scholar. If a primary supervisor leaves or becomes unavailable, the department appoints a new supervisor or promotes the co-supervisor to primary status. The university’s PhD ordinance governs the transition to minimize disruption to the scholar’s timeline. Students facing such issues should approach the department head and research coordinator promptly to activate the protocol.
