IIFT Delhi Admission FAQs
Short answers to what students ask before they apply.
Can I use my CAT 2025 score for the 2027 batch?▾
No. IIFT takes the CAT held just before your batch, so the 2027 batch needs CAT 2026. If you missed CAT 2026 and have three years of work, look at the weekend MBA instead.
Is the hostel compulsory in the MBA (IB)?▾
Yes. Every MBA (IB) student lives in the campus hostel. IIFT decides whether you get a single, double or triple room, and the fee changes a little with the room type.
Does the MBA (BA) give a hostel room?▾
No. It is a non residential programme, so its fee has no hostel charge. You need to find your own room in South Delhi. Start looking as soon as your offer letter comes.
What is the CV form after the shortlist?▾
It is an online form where shortlisted students fill marks, work and other details. Last year, IIFT moved its deadline to 15 Feb 2026. Fill it early, because missing it can cost you the GD and PI slot.
Which cities hold the IIFT GD and PI?▾
Last year they were held at Delhi, Kolkata, Kakinada, GIFT City, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Indore, Lucknow and Mumbai. IIFT can add or drop a centre. Book travel only after your slot letter comes.
Does CAT have negative marking?▾
Yes, for multiple choice questions. A right answer gives you 3 marks and a wrong one takes away 1. Questions where you type the answer have no negative marking, so always try them.
Can I change my category after I submit the IIFT form?▾
No. IIFT does not change the category once you fill it. Check it carefully, and upload a valid SC, ST, OBC (non creamy layer), EWS or PwD certificate with the form.
What if my final year result comes late?▾
You can still join. But IIFT must get proof of your degree with the minimum marks by 31 October of the joining year. If you do not tell IIFT in time, your admission is cancelled, and it does not wait for re-evaluation.
Do I need work experience for the full time MBA?▾
No. The rules ask only for a degree with 50%, so freshers apply every year. If you have worked, add it clearly in the CV form, because the panel looks at your whole profile.
Will I learn a foreign language in the MBA?▾
Yes. The course list has a foreign language, French or Spanish, in the full time MBA. Pick the one that suits the markets you want to work with.
Is there a port visit in the MBA (IB)?▾
Yes. IIFT takes you to a port to see how exports and imports work. You also do a 10 to 20 day project with an NGO, usually in the third trimester.
When do I do the summer internship?▾
At the end of the first year, in April, May and June. You work with a company for eight to ten weeks. The placement division gives out the internships through its own process.
Can foreign nationals or NRIs apply for the MBA (IB)?▾
Yes, through a separate form. Last year IIFT said that form would open in February 2026, after approval. If you are an NRI, watch iift.ac.in from January.
Can I get my fee back if I leave the MBA?▾
Yes. IIFT refunds the fee as per UGC rules when you withdraw. The refund takes at least two months, and the form fee is never returned.
What should I study for the MA Economics entrance test?▾
Revise basic maths, statistics, micro and macro economics, international economics, public finance, econometrics, development and the Indian economy. The test is objective. Practise economics questions under a timer.
Can I take the MA test in my own city?▾
Last year, the test was held in Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. You choose a city in the form, so pick the one nearest to you.
Which campus will I get in the MA Economics?▾
You choose Delhi or Kolkata, with 100 seats each. IIFT can move you to the other campus if fewer than 10 students join one campus. Keep this in mind when you choose.
Can I join the weekend MBA without a CAT score?▾
Yes. You can take the IIFT Written Ability Test at one of the four campuses instead. After the WAT, you face an interview. A test score only lets you skip the WAT.
Does the weekend MBA need weekday classes?▾
Mostly no. Classes are on Saturday afternoon and all of Sunday. IIFT also holds contact classes on five weekdays in each trimester, so ask your employer for those days off.
Who should write my reference letters for the weekend MBA?▾
Ask your current manager for one. The second should come from someone who knows your work and leadership. Parents, siblings, a spouse or other family members cannot write them.
Is the online MBA (IB) a real degree?▾
Yes. IIFT's Centre for Distance and Online Education teaches it, and you get an MBA from IIFT. Classes are live online on weekends from 9 am to 6 pm.
How do I get selected for the online MBA?▾
A faculty committee reads your form and shortlists you on your degree and work. There is no test. You need at least one year of work and a degree with 50%, or 45% for SC, ST and PwD.
Is IIFT a university?▾
Yes. IIFT was set up by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in 1963 and became a deemed to be university in 2002. So your MBA, MA or Ph.D is a university degree. NAAC gave IIFT an A+ grade in 2023.
Can an agent get me an IIFT seat for money?▾
No. IIFT fills seats only through its own forms on iift.ac.in and its listed portals. Anyone who promises you a seat for money is cheating you, so report it to admission@iift.edu.
How will IIFT contact me during admission?▾
IIFT sends most updates by email and puts lists on iift.ac.in. Use an email ID and a phone number you check every day. Keep your application number ready whenever you write to IIFT.
Where exactly is the IIFT Delhi campus?▾
It is at IIFT Bhawan, B-21, Qutab Institutional Area, New Delhi 110016, near the Qutub Minar. Check your call letter for the exact reporting time before you travel.
Who do I contact for admission doubts?▾
For the MBA, call 011-39147213 or 9773698083, or write to admission@iift.edu. For the MA, you can write to ecoadmission@iift.edu, and for the online MBA, to cdoe@iift.edu.

What goes into the statement of purpose?▾
Write four to five pages on why you want a Ph.D, your research area and aims, a short literature review, your experience, and your data and method. Follow the IIFT template.

Can I work on IIFT research projects as a scholar?▾

The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) Delhi, offers an MBA in International Business, with admissions now based on CAT scores starting 2024. Eligibility requires a minimum of 50% in graduation for general category and 45% for SC/ST, along with a degree in any field. Applicants with more than three years of undergraduate education are favored and work experience is an advantage. The application fee is Rs 3,000 for General/EWS/OBC candidates and Rs 1,500 for SC/ST.
The application process includes initial registration on the IIFT website after acquiring the CAT ID. Reservation provisions adhere to government guidelines for SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PWD categories. Applicants are shortlisted for a second round involving a Group Discussion, Writing Ability Test, Personal Interview (PI), and an Extempore. Interviews often involve geopolitical, economic, and technical topics. The cutoffs for admission typically range around the 98th percentile. The results and deadlines are communicated via the IIFT website, highlighting a delay in result announcements, as a point of potential improvement.
Despite changes in the admission tests, this aligns IIFT more closely with other prestigious management institutes, ensuring a streamlined and competitive admission process.
Do you know anyone who got into a top b-school (IIMs, XLRI, JBIMS, NM, IIFT, FMS etc.) with average UG percentage?
Ashish MetkarMBA from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (Graduated 2011)
Yes, I do know a friend who managed to get calls from many top B Schools despite having an average Undergraduate Score. Her profile looked like this
10th- 76%
12th- 68%
UG- 64%
Although her marks witnessed a gradual decline, she was lucky enough to study at XLRI. Past academics are considered as one but not the major factors at XLRI, unlike IIMs that focus a lot on past academics. A good XAT and GD-PI score can compensate for your poor academic record at XLRI, FMS, and JBIMS. NITIE is a top B School that does not consider past academics at all. My friend with her average profile managed to convert NITIE, XIMB, and all the IIMs except for the top ones obviously. So we can safely assume that admission into these top B Schools is possible even with an average profile provided that you score excellently in the CAT or XAT and the GDPI round.
Can someone with a low UG score and no work experience get into IIFT Delhi/Kolkata?
Sidhharth JainMBA in MBA in International Business, IIFT Kolkata (Expected 2024)
If you have a percentage in the 50s or 60s in UG and no work experience, you must score above the 98%ile with an excellent interview.
You will receive the IIFT. The percentage of these people is very low, but it is possible if you achieve a high percentile. If you perform well in the entrance exam (score 3-4 marks above the cut-off) and the admission process (GD-PI and WAT), a UG score (at least above 65) should not be a problem. All you have to do is perform well in the GDPI Process and give them a reason to choose you.
The last date of applying for admission to IIFT Delhi was 15th March 2024. Besides this, the list of shortlisted candidates for second round of admission is not disclosed. The group discussion round will be conducted in April 2024. The programme will commence in the first week of July 2024.
