The Ph.D. (Information Technology) programme at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi, is a full-time doctoral research programme offered by the FTK-Centre for Information Technology (FTK-CIT), one of the premier ICT research and service centres of the university. The programme spans a minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 5 years (extendable up to 6-8 years in special cases), with an annual tuition fee of approximately Rs. 10,175 per year. Admission is based on a JMI-conducted entrance test (or exemption for UGC/CSIR-NET/JRF or GATE qualified candidates), followed by a departmental interview. The programme is popular among scholars interested in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Big Data, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, e-Governance, and Distributed Systems. JMI, ranked 4th among universities in NIRF 2025 and accredited NAAC A++, provides a strong research environment with state-of-the-art ICT infrastructure, a 1-Gbps NKN link, and an active research culture at FTK-CIT.

Admissions for the 2026-27 session are upcoming. Based on the 2025-26 cycle, the Ph.D. admission notification for 2026-27 is expected to be released separately (typically around October 2026). For the 2025-26 session, applications were open from October 20 to November 8, 2025, with the entrance test held on November 15-16, 2025. The 2026-27 Ph.D. bulletin is yet to be released; tentative dates are expected to follow a similar pattern.

Key Points

  • The FTK-Centre for Information Technology was established in 1984 and has evolved into a critical ICT research and service hub for JMI, offering the Ph.D. (IT) as its only academic programme.
  • Research at FTK-CIT spans areas including e-Governance security frameworks, Big Data analytics in cloud environments, ERP implementation, AI/ML, and web-based talent management systems.
  • Candidates holding UGC-NET/JRF, CSIR-NET/JRF, GATE, or equivalent national-level qualifications are exempted from the JMI entrance test and directly called for interview.
  • A minimum of one research paper in a peer-reviewed/UGC CARE-listed journal and one conference presentation are mandatory before thesis submission.
  • The centre manages JMI's entire ICT infrastructure including 8000+ network nodes, 1-Gbps NKN connectivity, Jamia MIS (18-module ERP), and the university web portal, providing scholars with excellent research infrastructure.
  • JMI won the "Best ICT Enabled Institution of Higher Learning" award at the World Education Summit 2011 for the File Tracking System developed by FTK-CIT.
