Ques. What are the main research specializations available for Ph.D. (Mechanical Engineering) at JMI?
Ans. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at JMI offers research across three broad areas: (i) Production-Industrial Engineering - covering manufacturing processes, friction stir welding, advanced machining, additive manufacturing, supply chain management, and Industry 4.0; (ii) Machine Design - covering tribology, composites, nano-composites, robotics, CAD/CAM, and reliability engineering; and (iii) Thermal Engineering - covering renewable energy, heat transfer, CFD, refrigeration and air conditioning, and thermodynamics. Scholars choose their specialization based on the availability of supervisors and their research interests.
Ques. Is GATE score mandatory for Ph.D. (Mechanical Engineering) admission at JMI?
Ans. No, GATE is not mandatory. GATE qualified candidates are exempted from the JMI Ph.D. entrance test and directly called for the departmental interview. Candidates without GATE must appear in the JMI Ph.D. entrance test (Paper I: Research Methodology + Paper II: Mechanical Engineering subject paper) and score at least 50% aggregate to qualify for the interview. GATE 2027 was held on February 7, 8, 14, and 15, 2027, with results declared on March 19, 2027.
