DU PGD Japanese Studies FAQs

Ques. Is prior knowledge of Japanese language required for admission to this diploma course?

Ans. No, prior knowledge of Japanese language is not required for admission to this Post Graduate Diploma in Japanese Studies. The course is designed for beginners and covers Japanese language from the foundational level. However, candidates must pass the Standardized Language Admission Test (SLAT) which assesses language aptitude and general knowledge rather than existing Japanese language proficiency. The test is designed to identify candidates with the potential to learn Japanese language effectively.

Ques. What are the career prospects after completing this one-year diploma?

Ans. Graduates of this diploma have excellent career prospects in multiple sectors including translation and interpretation services, international business organizations, cultural exchange programmes, tourism industry, media and journalism, government organizations, and educational institutions. Many graduates pursue careers as Japanese language translators, interpreters, cultural consultants, and international relations specialists. The diploma also provides a strong foundation for pursuing higher studies in Japanese language and culture at the master's level.

Ques. Can I pursue higher studies after completing this diploma?

Ans. Yes, graduates of this diploma are eligible to pursue higher studies including Master's programmes in Japanese Studies, East Asian Studies, or related fields at Delhi University and other institutions. Many graduates also pursue professional certifications in specialized areas like business Japanese, technical translation, or cultural studies. The diploma provides a strong foundation for advanced academic pursuits and professional specializations in Japanese language and culture.

Ques. What is the structure and curriculum of the one-year diploma programme?

Ans. The one-year diploma programme is structured to provide comprehensive training in Japanese language and studies. The curriculum typically covers Japanese language skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening), Japanese grammar and syntax, Japanese culture and history, contemporary Japanese society, and cross-cultural communication. The programme combines classroom instruction with practical language practice, cultural seminars, and interactive learning sessions to develop both linguistic competence and cultural understanding.

Ques. How competitive is the admission process for this diploma?

Ans. The admission process is moderately competitive as it is based on merit in the Standardized Language Admission Test (SLAT). The course attracts candidates interested in Japanese language and culture from across India. The SLAT examination assesses language aptitude, general knowledge, and analytical skills. Seat availability is limited, making the selection process selective. Candidates need to perform well in the SLAT examination to secure admission.

Ques. What is the difference between this diploma and a certificate course in Japanese?

Ans. The Post Graduate Diploma in Japanese Studies is a more comprehensive and advanced programme compared to certificate courses. The diploma is a one-year full-time postgraduate programme that provides in-depth training in Japanese language, culture, history, and contemporary society. Certificate courses are typically shorter (3-6 months) and focus primarily on basic language skills. The diploma offers greater depth of study, more intensive language training, and better career prospects. Diploma holders have credentials recognized for professional positions in translation, interpretation, and international relations.

Delhi University: 4 Answered Questions

What are courses in DU for commerce without Math?

Binoy K P
Bhagyashree Patil

DU has quite a few good options for commerce students without math! main ones:

  • B.Com (Hons) / B.Com Programme — you can apply even without math in class 12. admission is via CUET UG. the content in 2nd/3rd year does get math-heavy (financial accounting, stats) but it's manageable without a strong math background
  • BMS (Bachelor of Management Studies) — good for commerce without math. covered in DU's South Campus colleges. MBA-track career path
  • BA (Hons) Economics — technically no math requirement at 12th, but the course itself is very quantitative. only pick this if you're actually comfortable with basic math concepts
  • BA Programme (Commerce elective combinations) — flexibility to combine commerce subjects with non-math options
  • BBA (FMS) — offered by Faculty of Management Studies affiliated colleges. good management track without needing PCM

one thing people miss — DU now admits via CUET UG, not 12th board cutoffs (since 2022). so it doesn't matter how high your 12th board marks are; what matters is your CUET score in the relevant subjects. for B.Com CUET subjects are Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, English. register early and prepare specifically for CUET!

Is a BA programme a good course if I do it from DU?

Neha Rani
Prakriti RainaLLB from Campus Law Centre, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi

BA at DU can be BA (Program), BA (Hons), and in Honors, you can take the specialization course in Economics, Political Science, History, English, Hindi, Geography, and so on.

Furthermore, if you expect to get a higher percentage in BA courses, you are mistaken. Students at Delhi University typically receive very low grades. The average score is between 51 and 58%. It would not surprise me if someone became a University topper with only 58% of the marks.

So, just for the DU brand, choose the BA program and if you want to work in the civil service, you're on the right track.

What is the scope of the BA programme from DU?

Princy ChaudharyStudied Bachelor of Arts Degrees & English Honours at Ramjas College, University of Delhi

The B.A Programme is a well-known course at Delhi University. This course allows you to study a variety of subjects and is typically chosen by students who are undecided about their career paths. The B.A. programme includes courses in English, Hindi, Political Science, Economics, and History.

Here are some possible career paths:

  1. After completing a B.A. programme, the majority of students pursue postgraduate studies in fields such as B.Ed. or M.A. There are numerous options available after earning an M.A. in Education. Candidates who complete this course are qualified for PGT positions, and elementary and secondary principalships in both private and public schools. Candidates who pass the NET/SET in education are also eligible for university-level teaching jobs in both private and public institutions. A B.Ed. degree, on the other hand, can only lead to a job as a teacher in a government or private school.

  2. Another postgraduate degree pursued by students is an MBA. MBA programmes can lead to positions in private and public financial institutions.

  3. Students who have completed their graduation are eligible to apply for civil service examinations as well as Bank PO exams.

You can apply for positions in the Union Public Service Communication such as IPS, IAS, IFS, and Indian Defense Service. Before deciding on a career path, consider your strengths (aptitude) and interests. Choose potential career paths based on your aptitude, interests, and personality characteristics. Going into journalism or fashion design without interest or passion in them, for example, will not get you very far.
