NITK Surathkal M.Tech Environmental Engineering FAQs

Ques. What GATE score is required for M.Tech Environmental Engineering at NITK Surathkal?

Ans. Based on CCMT 2024-25 data, the closing GATE score for M.Tech Environmental Engineering (General category) at NITK Surathkal was around 443 marks (GATE CE paper). For OBC-NCL it was around 348, for SC around 319, and for ST around 207. This is one of the lower cutoffs among civil engineering M.Tech programmes at NITK, making it relatively accessible for GATE CE qualifiers.

Ques. What are the career prospects after M.Tech Environmental Engineering from NITK Surathkal?

Ans. Graduates can work in environmental consulting firms, pollution control boards (CPCB, SPCB), water treatment companies, government regulatory bodies (MoEFCC), and research organisations. Some graduates also pursue PhD programmes at IITs, IISc, or international universities. Government jobs through UPSC (IES - Environmental Engineering) and state PSC examinations are also popular career paths. The placement rate of 60% in 2022-23 reflects that many graduates opt for higher studies or government jobs rather than private sector placements.

Ques. Is M.Tech Environmental Engineering at NITK different from M.Tech Environmental Science and Technology offered by the Chemical Engineering department?

Ans. Yes, they are different programmes. M.Tech Environmental Engineering (under Civil Engineering) focuses on engineering solutions for environmental problems, including water and wastewater treatment, air pollution control, and solid waste management from a civil engineering perspective. M.Tech Environmental Science and Technology (under Chemical Engineering) focuses more on the chemical and process aspects of environmental management. Both are offered at NITK and have different GATE paper requirements (CE for Environmental Engineering, CH for Environmental Science and Technology).

Ques. Can Chemical Engineering graduates apply for M.Tech Environmental Engineering at NITK?

Ans. Yes, B.E./B.Tech in Chemical Engineering is among the eligible qualifying degrees for M.Tech Environmental Engineering at NITK. However, the GATE paper required for CCMT-based admission is CE (Civil Engineering). Chemical Engineering graduates would need to have appeared in the GATE CE paper to be eligible for CCMT admission.

Ques. What research opportunities are available for M.Tech Environmental Engineering students at NITK?

Ans. The Civil Engineering department at NITK has active research in water and wastewater treatment, groundwater contamination, air quality monitoring, solid waste management, and coastal environmental engineering. NITK's coastal location provides unique opportunities for research in coastal and marine environmental engineering. Faculty members are involved in sponsored research projects from agencies like DST, DRDO, and government bodies. Students can also access the Central Research Facility (CRF) for advanced analytical equipment.

Ques. Is M.Tech Environmental Engineering a good choice for students interested in government jobs?

Ans. Yes, M.Tech Environmental Engineering from NITK is an excellent qualification for government jobs. Graduates can appear for UPSC IES (Indian Engineering Services) in the Civil Engineering category, which includes environmental engineering topics. State PSC examinations for Assistant Engineer (Environmental) positions also value this qualification. Additionally, positions in Pollution Control Boards, CPCB, SPCB, MoEFCC, and other government environmental agencies are open to M.Tech Environmental Engineering graduates.

NIT Surathkal: 3 Answered Questions

What is the cutoff at NIT Surathkal for an MBA course?

Sayantani Barman
Arindam ChakrabortyStudied at National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal

NIT Surathkal offers candidates a full-time 2-year MBA program the total fee of which is INR 2.5 lakhs. To be eligible for this program, you must have completed your bachelor's with at least 50% marks or 5.5 CGPA from any recognized university. Additionally, you will have to appear for CAT, MAT, and XAT. The institute does not release the exact MBA cutoff but here is a vague idea for you

The minimum CAT percentile required to get admission in the MBA program of NIT Surathkal is 80 percentile.

  • General Category: 80-85 percentile
  • OBC category: 70+ percentile
  • SC and ST category: 65 percentile

However, I am strongly against you joining this institute as its MBA program has no value. Go to a full time-dedicated MBA B-school, and not a department of any Government college. It will help you save money and time.

How good is the MCA course at NIT, Surathkal?

Shikha GhosalStudied BTech in Computer Science, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (2019)

The MCA program at NIT Surathkal is decent but I feel NIT Allahabad will offer a better course and opportunity. This is because, at MNIT Allahabad, most companies allow MCA students to sit for placements with CSE and IT students. One of my distant cousins pursuing an MCA from MNNIT Allahabad cleared Google Mt.View. Moreover, CSE, IT, and MCA share a common department here and the computer Club classes are also held for all CSE, IT, and MCA combined.

Whereas In NIT Surathkal, the MCA program is inclined more toward Application Development and thereby focuses more on the latest programming language and tools to develop better and faster applications. Its primary aim is to provide a modern, industry-oriented education in applied computer science.

In my opinion, you should choose MNNIT Allahabad for MCA as it has better placement opportunities.
