The M.Tech programme in Mechatronics Engineering at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal is a 2-year full-time postgraduate programme offered under the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Launched in 2008, it was the first interdisciplinary Masters programme in the department, integrating Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Engineering. The programme spans 4 semesters with an annual intake of 33 seats via GATE/CCMT plus 5 self-financed seats. Total fees for GATE scholarship students are approximately Rs. 2.12 lakh (day scholar) over two years. Admission is through GATE (ME/EC/EE paper) via CCMT counselling. The programme is distinguished by its strong industry partnerships with Bosch, Volvo, L&T, Mercedes-Benz, and KUKA Robotics, and a dedicated Siemens Centre of Excellence in Automation on campus. NITK Surathkal is ranked 12th in Engineering by NIRF 2024, making this one of the most sought-after Mechatronics M.Tech programmes in India.

Admissions for the 2026-27 academic year are upcoming. GATE 2026 results were declared on March 19, 2026. NITK Surathkal M.Tech Mechatronics FAQs

Ques. What makes the M.Tech Mechatronics Engineering programme at NITK Surathkal unique compared to other NITs?

Ans. NITK Surathkal was among the first NITs to launch an M.Tech in Mechatronics Engineering (2008). The programme stands out due to its dedicated Siemens Centre of Excellence in Automation, a Bosch Automotive Electronics Laboratory with real engine ECUs and dynamometers, strong industry MOUs with Bosch, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz R&D India, and KUKA Robotics, and active research in e-mobility, medical devices, and AI-driven manufacturing. The interdisciplinary curriculum integrating mechanical, electrical, electronics, and computer engineering is a key differentiator.

Ques. Which GATE paper should I appear in for M.Tech Mechatronics Engineering at NITK Surathkal?

Ans. The primary GATE paper accepted is ME (Mechanical Engineering). However, candidates with backgrounds in Electronics and Communication (EC) or Electrical Engineering (EE) may also be eligible. Always verify the accepted GATE papers on the CCMT portal (ccmt.admissions.nic.in) before applying, as this can change each year.

Ques. What GATE score is typically required for M.Tech Mechatronics at NITK Surathkal for the General category?

Ans. Based on CCMT 2024 closing ranks, the GATE score required for General category was approximately 410 for Mechatronics Engineering at NITK Surathkal. NIT Surathkal: 3 Answered Questions

What is the cutoff at NIT Surathkal for an MBA course?

Sayantani Barman
Arindam ChakrabortyStudied at National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal

NIT Surathkal offers candidates a full-time 2-year MBA program the total fee of which is INR 2.5 lakhs. To be eligible for this program, you must have completed your bachelor's with at least 50% marks or 5.5 CGPA from any recognized university. Additionally, you will have to appear for CAT, MAT, and XAT. The institute does not release the exact MBA cutoff but here is a vague idea for you

The minimum CAT percentile required to get admission in the MBA program of NIT Surathkal is 80 percentile.

  • General Category: 80-85 percentile
  • OBC category: 70+ percentile
  • SC and ST category: 65 percentile

However, I am strongly against you joining this institute as its MBA program has no value. Go to a full time-dedicated MBA B-school, and not a department of any Government college. It will help you save money and time.

How good is the MCA course at NIT, Surathkal?

Shikha GhosalStudied BTech in Computer Science, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (2019)

The MCA program at NIT Surathkal is decent but I feel NIT Allahabad will offer a better course and opportunity. This is because, at MNIT Allahabad, most companies allow MCA students to sit for placements with CSE and IT students. One of my distant cousins pursuing an MCA from MNNIT Allahabad cleared Google Mt.View. Moreover, CSE, IT, and MCA share a common department here and the computer Club classes are also held for all CSE, IT, and MCA combined.

Whereas In NIT Surathkal, the MCA program is inclined more toward Application Development and thereby focuses more on the latest programming language and tools to develop better and faster applications. Its primary aim is to provide a modern, industry-oriented education in applied computer science.

In my opinion, you should choose MNNIT Allahabad for MCA as it has better placement opportunities.
