NLSIU BA LLB Selection Criteria 2026

NLSIU BA LLB admission is entirely through CLAT rank. The Consortium of NLUs conducts up to 5 rounds of centralised counselling. NLSIU consistently fills all General seats by Round 1 or Round 2.

  • CLAT rank determines eligibility. There is no GD, PI, or essay round. Rank alone determines seat allotment.
  • 30% of seats in each vertical category are horizontally reserved for women. A woman candidate with a lower overall rank may be allotted a seat ahead of a male candidate if the women’s horizontal quota is unfilled.
  • PwD candidates with a benchmark disability get 5% horizontal reservation across all vertical categories.
  • CLAT 2026 General closing rank: AIR 110. Over the past 3 years, the General closing rank at NLSIU has stayed between AIR 90 and AIR 120, reflecting stable and extreme competition.

Key insight: NLSIU General category seats have closed before AIR 120 in every CLAT cycle for the past 3 years. Only candidates in the top 120 all-India ranks in CLAT have a realistic chance at a General category seat. Reservations apply strictly to vertical categories. PwD candidates with valid benchmark disability certificates compete separately and have an easier pathway.

How to Apply for BA LLB at NLSIU?

  • Register for CLAT at consortiumofnlus.ac.in. The next cycle (CLAT 2027) is expected to open in July to October 2026.
  • After CLAT result, register for counselling on the same Consortium portal.
  • Submit document proof (10+2 marksheet, category certificate, Karnataka domicile certificate if applicable).
  • Fill NLSIU as your first preference in the choice form for a General category seat. Seat allotment is preference-order based.
  • Accept the allotment and pay the seat acceptance fee within the deadline. Missing the deadline forfeits the allotment.

NLSIU Bangalore vs Top NLUs - Admission Comparison

Aspirants shortlisting top NLUs often compare NLSIU Bangalore with NALSAR Hyderabad and NLU Delhi. The three differ significantly in admission process, entrance exam, and closing ranks.

Particulars NLSIU Bangalore NALSAR Hyderabad NLU Delhi
Entrance Exam CLAT (Consortium) CLAT (Consortium) AILET (NLU Delhi own exam)
Counselling Body Consortium of NLUs Consortium of NLUs NLU Delhi (own counselling)
BA LLB Total Seats 310 (incl. 10 Karnataka) 120 110

Women candidates benefit from NLSIU’s 30% horizontal reservation, which does not apply at NLU Delhi. NLSIU fees are significantly higher than both NALSAR and NLU Delhi.

As per Collegedunia Reviews, students at NLSIU consistently highlight the quality of the faculty and the depth of legal research exposure. Multiple reviewers note that the moot court and legal aid clinic culture at NLSIU is unmatched among Indian law schools.

Does Harvard law accept NLSIU students?

Nehalstudent at NLSIU Bangalore

Currently, the Student Exchange Programme at NLSIU doesn’t have a partnership with Harvard Law School. Some of the most prestigious law universities abroad that offer an exchange program with NLSIU are Bucerius Law School (Hamberg, Germany), University Paris-Dauphine, University of Bern (Switzerland), University of Luxembourg, National University of Singapore (Singapore), and others.

However, do note that if you plan to get enrolled into Harvard Law School after studying at NLSIU, you can do so. The Master of Laws (LL.M.) and Doctor of Jurisprudential Science (S.J.D.) degrees at Harvard Law are designed for students who have already obtained their first law degree. The general eligibility requirement is a Bachelor’s degree in law. They do not require TOEFL, IELTS or any other English Proficiency Test.

How should I prepare for NLSIU Bangalore?

ShrutiStudent at NLSIU Bangalore

Since NLSIU Bangalore is currently the top NLU in India, with an NIRF rank of #1, you will have to put in a lot of work. There will be 120 questions in the exam overall. The questions will be based on the updated CLAT Exam Pattern. Here's how you can prepare for CLAT to get into NLSIU Bangalore:

  • Practise mock tests: Practise at least 1-2 mock tests of all portions of CLAT each day, to examine your performance and know your weaker areas.
  • Practice PYQs: In a similar manner, practise previous years’ CLAT questions to understand the exam pattern and type of questions asked. You can also get an idea of the difficulty level of the exam, and the questions that are often repeated.
  • Online/Offline study resources: You should make use of research apps and websites that provide quizzes and daily or weekly updates on current affairs. You can also buy CLAT GK reference books to study static GK. I have listed some references for you below:
  • Books: Oswaal, CLAT & AILET 10, CLAT LLB 2024 Guide by Gautam Puri & Priya Jain, CLAT Entrance Exam Guide 2024 by LearnX.

How do I get admission in NLSIU, Bangalore?

Sunaina MittalStudied Finance from University of Delhi (2015)

The only way that will lead you to NLSIU, Bangalore is scoring and ranking top in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT).

It is a competitive exam and has 200 questions. Each question carries 1 mark. The test is conducted only once every year and the cut-off for every year for different colleges varies greatly.

Specifically for NLSIU, you need to rank in the first 50-60 in the general category. For the reservation category, you have 25-30 more seats. In order to crack the exam, you need to prepare well in advance and strategically.

Is it difficult to take admission in NLSIU Banglore?

Rita JosephBA LLB (Hons.) in Law,Christ (deemed university) (2018)

According to some of the student reviews, I read online, I would say that the answer depends on your preparation for the entrance exam CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) if you wish to get into any National Law Schools/Universities in India.

Every exam is competitive since there are so many other students appearing for the exam along with you. NLSIU's intake is very minimal when compared to others. Its syllabus is quite challenging and the students there get prepared as quite good lawyers.

Roughly, you will have to make sure that you rank in the first 50 in All India Rank (AIR) if you belong to the general category, and you get a little more margin if you belong to any reservation category.

Can I get admission in any NLSIU after cracking CLAT?

Rytash AnandBTS from Indira Gandhi National Open University (2020)

Presently, only one college comes under the NLSIU tag and it is number one on the list. In order to get into NLSIU Bangalore, you have to make sure that your rank falls between AIR 1 to AIR 30.

Surely, there are other colleges as well that you can get into after cracking CLAT, the ones with the NLU and NALSAR tag. Here are some facts you should know about NLU.

  • NLUs are allotted as per your rank and your preference list which you indicate in your application.
  • For example, if you have an AIR 1, and have chosen NLSIU Bangalore as your first preference, you will get into NLSIU Bangalore and other colleges mentioned in the first place of your list.
  • But if you get an AIR between 500-600s and NLSIU is your first preference, there is no chance of getting into NLSIU and you may end up in a lower-ranked NLUs.
  • If your AIR is between 1 to 40 you can get into any National Law University of your preference.

Therefore try working harder for your CLAT exam, as the better your rank will get you admitted in your preferred colleges.
